Polycythemia vera (PV) is a common cause of Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) and portal vein thrombosis (PVT). The postpartum period is a precipitating cofactor. An additional heparin-induced thrombocytopenia/thrombosis (HIT/T) leads to a life-threatening condition in which transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunting (TIPS) seems to be the only life-saving procedure. Skeletal muscle and small intestine are rare sites of metastasis in renal cell carcinoma. Therefore very few reports of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy exist for these types of metastasis. Here, a case of metastatic renal cell carcinoma to muscle and jejunum is reported. After IFN-alpha therapy for 9 weeks, muscle metastasis completely disappeared and intestinal lesions were markedly reduced. However, subsequent patient compliance for this therapy was poor, resulting in death after relapse of the RCC.

Recent effective treatments for subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) are oral inosiplex and intrathecal interferon therapy. The former seems to be effective for life expectancy but not for neurological disability, and the latter is a debating antiviral treatment although favorable reports are increasing. Thirty-six HCL patients were treated with 2 x 10(6) U/m2 IFN-alpha-2b three times weekly for 24 months, followed by 12 months of treatment with one of three doses ranging from 0.5 x 10(6) U to 2 x 10(6) U/m2. Combination treatment of primary anogenital warts with subcutaneous interferon alpha 2a plus cryotherapy was no more efficacious than cryotherapy alone. Patients with primary AG warts showed no in vitro or in vivo suppression of non-specific immunity. In patients treated with interferon plus cryotherapy non-specific cellular immunity was stimulated, both in vitro and in vivo compared with patients treated with cryotherapy alone.
