A meta-analysis of functional brain activity during valence processing in internet gaming disorder and gambling disorder.

The intersection of gaming and gambling has gained increasing attention due to their role in addictive behaviours and their effects on brain function. Disadvantageous decision-making, involving continued engagement despite adverse consequences, may reflect dysregulations in positive and negative valence processing common to both gaming and gambling disorders. After conducting a thorough literature search (3773 records identified), we included 56 studies focusing on valence-related processes during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with a total of 952 individuals with Internet Gaming

Transdiagnostic study of dynamic brain activity and connectivity among people with gambling and internet gaming disorders: DYNAMIC BRAIN ACTIVITY IN GD AND IGD.

Despite both internet gaming disorder (IGD) and gambling disorder (GD) being officially recognized as medical conditions by the World Health Organization, controversies persist. A transdiagnostic study may help inform classification and intervention approaches. IGD and GD may share or have distinct neural and behavioral features. To investigate, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and self-reported behavioral data were collected from 58 individuals with GD, 31 with IGD, and 83 healthy control (HC) participants. After controlling for demographics, both GD and IGD groups s

The relationship between problematic social media use and psychological factors among university students with evaluation of ADHD, social anxiety and self-esteem.

Problematic social media use (PSMU) has been increasingly associated with various psychological vulnerabilities; however, findings remain mixed, particularly among university students and in non-Western contexts. This study aimed to examine the associations between PSMU and psychological factors including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, social anxiety, and self-esteem among university students, as well as to explore the role of selected sociodemographic and usage-related characteristics. This cross-sectional study included 179 university students aged 18 to 25 years.

The Development of an Internet-Based Treatment for Problem Gamblers and Concerned Significant Others: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Problem gambling creates significant harm for the gambler and for concerned significant others (CSOs). While several studies have investigated the effects of individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for problem gambling, less is known about the effects of involving CSOs in treatment. Behavioral couples therapy (BCT) has shown promising results when working with substance use disorders by involving both the user and a CSO. This pilot study investigated BCT for problem gambling, as well as the feasibility of performing a larger scale randomized controlled trial. 36 participants, 18 gamblers

Dynamic within-person associations between problematic social media use and sleep quality among university students: The mediating role of nomophobia and the moderating role of trait rumination.

Problematic social media use (PSMU) and poor sleep quality are prevalent among university students. Although previous research has documented associations between PSMU and sleep problems, less is known about the short-term dynamic mechanisms underlying this relationship and the individual differences that may shape vulnerability. Drawing on intensive longitudinal data and dynamic structural equation modeling, this study examined a moderated mediation model in which nomophobia (i.e. anxiety or distress arising from being unable to access or use one's mobile phone) mediated the association betwe

Core networks related disrupted effective connectivity and relationship with sleep disturbances in internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is characterized by increased gaming cravings and sleep disturbances. However, previous studies mainly focused on the relationship between undirected connections among brain regions and IGD features, and rarely reported on directed connections among networks. METHODS: This study, based on 66 male IGD subjects and 53 healthy controls (HCs), assessed the effective connectivity (EC) differences of intra- and inter-networks for each subject using spectral dynamic causal modeling from eight interest regions (ROI) in the default mode (DMN), salience (SN),

Efficacy of a web-based self-help tool to reduce problem gambling in Switzerland: study protocol of a two-armed randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The past-year prevalence of problem gambling worldwide averages 2.3%. Switzerland exhibits a slightly lower past-year prevalence rate, of 1.1%, among adults. Only a minority of these adults attend outpatient treatment. Surveyed problem gamblers have explained that they wanted to handle the problem on their own. The option of a web-based self-help programme could potentially reach those users who hesitate to approach treatment centres and help them to reduce or stop their problem gambling. The effectiveness of such web-based interventions has been shown in other countries. METHOD

The Impact of Bullying Victimization on Short Video Addiction in Adolescents: The Role of Emotional Distress and Neural Mechanisms.

Short-video addiction (SVA) has become a growing concern among adolescents. Bullying victimization (BV) is considered a significant factor contributing to it, yet its relationship with SVA remains underexplored. This study investigated the role of BV in SVA, examining developmental and psychological pathways across middle school students (MSS; n = 1269), college students (CS; n = 1615) and a replicated college sample (RCS; n = 112). Descriptive statistics revealed significant correlations between SVA and BV, including subdimensions such as verbal, physical and relational bullying, as well as n

Longitudinal associations between parental rejection, school engagement and gaming disorder symptoms among Chinese adolescents: Disentangling between- and within-person effects.

Gaming disorder is a prevalent behavioral disorder among adolescents, exerting a negative impact on their social development. Parental rejection has been suggested as a core risk factor for gaming disorder symptoms. However, longitudinal research on the direction of this association and the underlying psychological mechanisms remains limited, with most studies failing to disentangle between-person and within-person effects. To address this gap, this study conducted a three-wave longitudinal survey over one year with 1,987 adolescents (56.1% male, Mage = 12.32). Using the Random Intercept Cross

The effect of a single session of transcranial direct current stimulation on inhibitory control and impulsivity in users with excessive Internet gaming: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial.

Excessive Internet gaming has become an increasingly serious public health problem, closely related to changes in cognitive function (especially inhibitory control deficits and increased impulsivity) and related brain regions (such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, DLPFC). As a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may improve these cognitive deficits by regulating the activity of DLPFC, but its specific effects and mechanisms in the excessive Internet gaming population still need to be further clarified. This study aims to investigate th
