There are indications in psychosomatic transplant literature that the "transitional space" (in the D.W. Winnicott's sense) plays an important part in the psychic integration of an transplanted organ or its donor. The present case study is based on a semi-standard textbook interview carried out in the course of a qualitative research program with 20 male and female patients following a lung transplant. Two transcribed passages in the text, which relate to the transplanted organ and its donor, were interpreted from the point of view of Winnicott's "transitional phenomenon" model. The case study

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers serve as the cornerstone of care for patients with advanced lung cancer during chemotherapy, carrying a profound psychosocial burden. Little is known about their lived experiences and unmet needs within the distinctive Chinese cultural context. Elucidating these needs is crucial to inform the development of culturally sensitive, family-centered palliative care models in China. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative phenomenological study. Fourteen family caregivers were purposively recruited from a tertiary hospital in China. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were

This study engages the growing literature on stigma, coping and well-being by examining how individuals with concealed mental health conditions engage in 1) behavioral coping practices aimed at improving their well-being 2) stigma resistance. To explore these issues, we analyze 26 in-depth interviews with individuals in India who identify as having a mental health condition that they are actively concealing at work. Altogether, we find participants draw upon and challenge distinctions between mental and physical health as a form of stigma resistance. Furthermore, our findings suggest individua

This article focuses on older adults' resilience following major losses. Interviews of seventeen older adults in Ireland illuminate the resilience process and its social dimensions - family, friends, social participation, formal supports, faith and spirituality. Becoming resilient is a process that develops through agential resolve contextualized by utilization of available resources. Those who had struggled to see themselves as resilient benefited from formal supports - such as counseling and social prescribing - that helped them to engage resilient agency. The resilience process presents as

BACKGROUND: The birth of a child is typically associated with joy and relief; however, when a newborn is admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), parental stress often persists or intensifies. The duration of a newborn's stay in the NICU can have a significant effect on parental well-being.
AIM: This study explored the experiences of stress among mothers with hospitalised newborns in NICUs within the Accra Metropolis.
STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative, descriptive and exploratory design was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 purposively selected parents in NICUs. T

The alternative model of personality disorders (AMPD) traits were designed to maintain continuity with the Section II personality disorder (PD) diagnoses by retaining the same clinical information. Whether the AMPD traits achieve this is not well established. Prior work testing incremental validity of AMPD traits and Section II diagnoses is limited by the fact each model was measured by a different instrument or rater, making it unclear whether discrepancies are due to the constructs or methods. Here, we compare the incremental validity of AMPD traits versus Section II PDs assessed by the same

The present study investigated differences in cognitive coping strategies between anxiety-disordered and non-anxious adolescents. In addition, the interaction effect with gender as well as differences between specific anxiety diagnoses was examined. A clinical sample of 159 anxiety-disordered adolescents and a general community sample of 370 non-anxious adolescents were recruited. Nine cognitive coping strategies were assessed in all adolescents (aged 12-16 years). Results showed that anxiety-disordered adolescents had significantly higher scores on most of the cognitive coping strategies than

Under the auspices of the United Network for Organ Sharing, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and the American Society of Transplantation, a meeting was convened on May 25, 2006, in Washington, DC, to develop guidelines for the psychosocial evaluation of prospective living kidney donors who have neither a biologic nor longstanding emotional relationship with the transplant candidate. These 'unrelated' donors are increasingly often identified by transplant candidates via the Internet, print media and other public appeals. The expansion of living donor kidney transplantation to include

Adaptive functioning was examined in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and a psychiatric comparison group of children with pervasive developmental disorders or mild mental retardation (PDD/MR). As assessed with the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, adaptive functioning was well below average for all three clinic groups. (The PDD/MR group had the lowest adaptive functioning scores, although not statistically different from the other groups). However, the level of adaptive functioning relative to IQ in the areas of Socialization,

The purpose of this study was to evaluate gender differences in psychosocial responses of 449 consecutive first-admission couples in a fertility clinic. Consistent with previous research, infertile women showed higher distress than their partners on a global measure of psychiatric symptoms and subscales of anxiety, depression, hostility, and cognitive disturbances, as well as on measures of stress and self-esteem. When compared with same-sexed population norms on the measure of psychiatric symptoms, both male and female infertile patients were significantly more distressed than average. No evi

When compared to amputation, limb salvage procedures for extremity sarcomas have been advocated because of potential functional benefits and presumed psychological-outcome advantages. The purpose of this study was to compare psychological outcomes between survivors who underwent either amputation or limb salvage procedures for extremity sarcomas. Fifteen amputees and 20 patients with salvaged limbs (mean age, 37.9 years; range, 15 to 71 years) were evaluated 1 to 5 years after surgery for extremity sarcomas. Demographic and medical information was obtained and cognitive functioning, affect, mo

We applied grounded theory methodology to generate a working relationship model that influences motivation for stable housing among homeless people with serious mental illness, to understand the role of a working relationship in critical service transitions. We focused on practitioners' perspectives and practices in Critical Time Intervention (CTI), a community intervention aimed to reduce homelessness through providing support during the transition from institutional to community living. We found a working relationship that highlighted "nonauthoritative" and "humanistic" features. Workers res

This study examines the relationship between levels of psychological distress in substance-dependent mothers and their differential response to a dyadic parent-child intervention. A sample of 66 mothers who were receiving treatment for substance abuse, as well as a simultaneous parenting intervention, were interviewed pre and post-treatment on measures of psychological distress, adult and child trauma history, parental reflective functioning, and child social-emotional development. Additionally, clinicians provided assessments of the parent-child relationships. As anticipated, trauma histories

BACKGROUND: For a population of adolescents, gynecomastia is a persistent problem. Occurring during a critical period in the formation of self-image and gender identity, this gender-incongruent process may disrupt normal psychological development. This study was designed to identify the prevalence of psychological disturbances in young male patients presenting with symptomatic gynecomastia to determine whether psychological examination should be included as a routine portion of this patient population's treatment.
METHODS: From 2002 to 2009, patients aged between 10 and 18 presenting to our i

OBJECTIVE: Prophylactic mastectomy (PM) offers 90% or greater reduction in risk of breast cancer to women at increased hereditary risk. Nonetheless, acceptance in North America is low (0-27%) and 25-50% of women electing surgery report psychological distress and/or difficulty adapting following PM. Most women also report reduced cancer worry postoperatively. Psychological consultation to aid decision-making and post-surgical coping is not routinely offered. This retrospective, cross-sectional study explored interest in and acceptability of psychological consultation for issues related to PM am

The aim was to explore the lived experiences of women diagnosed with endometriosis and receiving care in Spain to understand its impact across multiple areas of their lives. This qualitative study utilized a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Data were collected between February 2023 and June 2025. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 17 women and were audio recorded with the participants' consent. Interview data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed following the theoretical framework of van Manen's phenomenology of practice approach. We identified four themes: inter

Indian Society is pro-natalist, often placing the social burden of infertility on women. This paper aims to bring forth how 30 women seeking infertility treatment at a public hospital in Delhi cope with the condition. Using purposive sampling, in-depth interviews were conducted with the women. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed seven themes: Infertility and resilience: Hope and determination; Infertility as destiny: Attribution to God and karma; Constructing alternative identities through work; Coping through recreation and spirituality; Rationalising infertility: Self-consolation; R

There is a lack of awareness of how sleep health and sleep disorders are experienced. Previous research has found that living with narcolepsy has a debilitating impact on several areas of an individual's life alongside significant diagnostic delays. This study uses a phenomenological, qualitative methodology to explore experiences of being diagnosed with and living with narcolepsy. Six women with type 1 narcolepsy participated in semi-structured interviews. Transcripts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Capturing the whole illness experience of narcolepsy, our analys
