Regulation of fluid flow through corneal stroma was investigated in the bullfrog. Corneal specimens were mounted by clamping their limbal sclera between the two chambers of a Ussing-type chamber. The epithelial surface was covered with Ringer's solution, while the endothelial surface was superfused with Ringer's solution at various pressures ranging from 0-60 mm Hg. OBJECTIVE: Intraluminal crystalloids have been described in the prostate, salivary gland, and ovary, but have not yet been reported in the breast. We report four cases of breast carcinoma in which these crystalloids were found in ducts with intraductal carcinoma or atypical hyperplasia. The presence of intraluminal crystalloids may be a useful adjunct in making a diagnosis of carcinoma or may be a feature to look for as a marker for the presence of carcinoma.

Methodological aspects of the use of X-ray microanalysis in physiological and pharmacological experiments on cultured myometrial cells were investigated. Cultured human myometrial cells were grown from biopsies after detaching the fibroblasts. Of the cultured cells, 95-98% showed desmin-like immunoreactivity. Transmission electron microscopy showed that subcultured cells were different from myometrial cells in situ. The effects of washing the cells to remove external salt-rich medium were investigated. The records of 163 penetrating trauma patients who required surgery in a 36-month period between 1988 and 1990 were reviewed. Those patients with head trauma were excluded. Thirty patients were identified as having: similar Injury Severity Scores (ISS), received at least 8 L of crystalloid, and received at least 4 units of packed red blood cells during the first 24 hours after admission. Twenty parturients undergoing elective Caesarean section were allocated randomly to receive crystalloid preload 20 ml kg-1 over either 20 min or 10 min before spinal anaesthesia.
