Deoxynivalenol (DON), a trichothecene mycotoxin commonly found in cereal grains and their derived products, poses significant risks to human and animal health. In previous work, a fusion enzyme composed of the dehydrogenase DADH and the aldo-keto reductase AKR13B3 was engineered to convert DON into the non-toxic 3-epi-DON in a single step. Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder. This disorder is usually caused by mutations in any one of the genes; BCKDHA, BCKDHB and DBT, which represent E1α, E1β and E2 subunits of the branched-chain α-keto acid dehydrogenase (BCKDH) complex, respectively. We assessed cyclooxygenase activity in cultured rat mesangial cells by measuring prostaglandin production with reverse phase HPLC upon addition of exogenous 14C arachidonic acid. OBJECTIVES: To measure and compare the efficacy and tolerability of a classical ketogenic diet (CKD) and a polyunsaturated fatty acids ketogenic diet (PUFAKD) in managing childhood refractory epilepsy. Efficacy was assessed by measuring the change in seizure frequency at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months within and between groups. The percentage reduction in seizures at <50 %, 50-90 %, >90 %, and 100 % was also measured.
