Laser vision correction for residual refractive errors in patients with previous radial keratotomy (RK) presents a challenging task. Different techniques have been used with varying outcomes. This study aimed to systematically review published articles on refractive surgeries in post-RK patients by conducting a search on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The final analysis included 35 studies that described a total of 888 eyes. Our systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) for photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), top

A 24-year-old man was referred for postrefractive surgery evaluation. The patient had a history of uneventful laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in both eyes 3 months previously. According to the surgeon who originally performed the surgery, on slitlamp examination, only microstriae in the left eye was detected on postoperative day 1 and a more conservative follow-up approach was adopted without further immediate intervention. The patient returned only 3 months after surgery, complaining of low vision in the left eye that, according to the patient, had been present since postoperative week 2

To systematically evaluate the clinical effect of wavefront-guided laser in situ keratomileusis (WFG-LASIK) and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in terms of refractive errors and high-order aberrations. A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science and China National Knowledge Internet was performed to identify studies evaluating the clinical outcomes of SMILE and WFG-LASIK ended in May 2022. Meta-analyses were performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias of the RCTs was evaluated using the Cochrane Handbook criteria, and th

PURPOSE: To assess effectiveness of individualized ray-trace based laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for correction of myopia in everyday clinical practice.
SETTING: Single-site private practice.
DESIGN: Retrospective nonrandomised unmasked chart review.
METHODS: Consecutive, myopic eyes (range ≤-8.25 diopters [D] sphere; astigmatism 0 to -4.25 D) treated with ray-trace based LASIK were included. Patients underwent wavefront, tomography, and biometry assessment using the InnovEyes Sightmap diagnostic device. The ray-trace based algorithm (InnovEyes algorithm) then generated an individual

With an estimated incidence of 0.011%, the SMILE procedure seems to have the lowest risk of postoperative keratectasia among contemporary keratorefractive procedures. Nevertheless, due to the novelty of the procedure as well as the lack of data, no clear superiority over femto-LASIK or PRK can be stated at this time. In this respect, application of the identical tomographic screening criteria previously developed for excimer-based procedures is of paramount importance to minimize the risk of corneal ectasia. As an adjunct to conventional corneal tomography, newer imaging modalities such as OCT

SIGNIFICANCE: Highly irregular cornea leads to poor vision, glare, and starbursts. Although treatment is still at the exploration stage, topography-guided Contoura surgery has excellent potential for the treatment of highly irregular corneas.
PURPOSE: This case series reviews three patients (one with abnormal back elevation, one with corneal scar after fungal keratitis, and one with post-laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis central islands) treated with topography-guided Contoura surgery.
CASE REPORTS: In case 1, a 19-year-old man underwent topography-guided Contoura refractive surgery in t

PURPOSE: To describe a technique of using a femtosecond laser to assist with graft preparation for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK).
METHODS: A femtosecond laser was used to assist in graft preparation for 3 DMEK procedures. The donor cornea is mounted on a proprietary artificial anterior chamber. A partial thickness deep circular cut is made with the femtosecond laser through the endothelium, Descemet membrane, and posterior stroma. Graft preparation is then completed without the use of a corneal trephine.
RESULTS: In all cases, graft preparation was successfully completed.

BACKGROUND: The novel Femtosecond lenticule extraction (FLEx) procedure has been considered safe, predictable, and effective in treating myopia and myopic astigmatism, with few complications. However, an enhancement procedure after FLEx may be required in some cases, but has not been reported in detail.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old woman who had undergone bilateral FLEx with the VisuMax femtosecond laser treatment for myopic astigmatism complained of double vision in her left eye after the operation. The manifest refraction was -0.50/-1.25 × 180°. The corneal topography showed a central-i

The authors have developed an approach to fabricate sharp and high aspect ratio metal tips using nanosecond pulse laser melting. A quartz wafer covered with a thin chromium (Cr) film was placed on top of a second wafer with a sub-micrometer gap between them and the Cr film facing the second wafer. Then an excimer laser pulse (308 nm wavelength, 20 ns pulse duration) was shone from the back of the quartz wafer and melted the Cr film momentarily (several hundred nanoseconds). It is found that the molten Cr films can self-form discrete metal pillars connecting the two wafers. After separating the

PURPOSE: To compare the change in higher order aberrations (HOAs) after LASIK and laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK).
METHODS: This prospective comparative study measured HOAs preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively in 65 eyes (41 patients) that underwent LASIK and 65 eyes (50 patients) that underwent LASEK. Preoperative refraction was limited to myopia up to -5.00 diopters (D) and astigmatism <or=-0.75 D. Patients were matched for age, manifest refraction, and HOAs. All procedures were wavefront-guided using the VISX S4 Star excimer laser (Abbott Medical Optics). Laser in situ kerat
