[A case of ileal leiomyosarcoma, difficult to differentiate from retrovesical tumor: report of a case].

A case of ileal leiomyosarcoma which was preoperatively diagnosed as a retrovesical tumor in a 41-year-old male patient was reported. He consulted our department with a complaint of tenesmus ani. CT, MRI and ultrasonography showed a mass in the retrovesical space which was palpable superior to the prostate in anal digital examination. Intraoperatively, the tumor was found to originate from the ileum, 250 cm from the ileocecal joint (Bauhin's valve). It is difficult to make diagnosis of leiomyosarcomas of small intestine preoperatively. Thirty-eight cases of leiomyosarcoma of small intestine re…

An unusual lead point: jejunal leiomyosarcoma causing jejuno-jejunal intussusception - a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Adult intussusception is rare. Unlike in pediatric cases, adult intussusception typically arises from an underlying pathology. Primary jejunal leiomyosarcoma is an exceptionally rare malignant tumor originating from the smooth muscle cells of the small intestine. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old man presented with signs and symptoms of acute intestinal obstruction, including abdominal pain, constipation, vomiting, and abdominal distension of 2 days duration. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a jejunojejunal intussusception with a lead-point intraluminal mass. Explor…

Pancreatic Tail Leiomyosarcoma With Hepatic Metastases: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges: A Case Report.

Primary pancreatic leiomyosarcoma (PLMS) is a rare malignant tumor accounting for less than 0.1% of all pancreatic neoplasms and often presents at an advanced stage with distant metastases or local invasion. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific, including gastrointestinal discomfort, abdominal pain, or distension, which frequently leads to delayed diagnosis. We report a 53-year-old woman with persistent abdominal distension, bloating, and central discomfort, in whom imaging revealed a 7.5 cm mass in the pancreatic tail with multiple liver metastases, encasement of the splenic arteries, and no dir…

Long-term survival following serial pulmonary metastasectomies for uterine leiomyosarcoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In patients with uterine leiomyosarcoma and multiple pulmonary metastases complicated by pneumothorax during chemotherapy, repeated metastasectomy may contribute to long-term survival. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old woman underwent total hysterectomy for uterine leiomyosarcoma. She subsequently developed multiple pulmonary metastases and was treated with gemcitabine plus docetaxel (GD) chemotherapy. During the course of chemotherapy, she developed a pneumothorax, possibly as a consequence of tumor necrosis induced by treatment. Due to a rapidly declining in the performance statu…

Primary vaginal leiomyosarcoma: A case report emphasizing multidisciplinary care of a rare entity.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare malignant tumor derived from smooth muscle cells. It usually occurs in the uterine cavity, other localizations, such as vaginal leiomyosarcoma, are atypical. Due to the nonspecific nature of its clinical presentation, vaginal LMS may be misdiagnosed as a benign gynecological neoplasm and is often detected at an advanced stage. Here we report a case of a 45-year-old patient who was diagnosed with metastatic vaginal LMS at the regional oncology center of Oujda in Morocco. Following the multidisciplinary team meeting discussion, the patient received first-line doxor…

Concurrent leiomyosarcoma causing small bowel obstruction in a patient with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a leading cause of general surgery inpatient admissions. SBO is most commonly associated with postoperative adhesions; however, neoplastic SBO is an important differential. Here, we present a case of neoplastic SBO secondary to leiomyosarcoma in a patient with known mature B cell lymphoma. This case highlights the importance of avoiding early diagnostic closure and adherence to oncological principles of resection for small bowel tumours.

High circulating HMGB1 indicates good prognosis in patients with advanced leiomyosarcoma under chemoimmunotherapy.

Few clinical studies investigated the putative link between the activation of immunogenic cell death (ICD) and the oncological outcome. Recent data, published in a Phase 1b trial, demonstrated that an ICD-associated surge in the plasma concentration of high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) indicates favorable prognosis in patients with advanced leiomyosarcomas treated with the combination of doxorubicin, dacarbazine and nivolumab.

Surgical resection of retrohepatic inferior vena cava leiomyosarcoma without vascular reconstruction: case report.

Inferior vena cava leiomyosarcoma (IVCL) is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor. Surgical treatment is a challenge because it must combine free surgical margins with vascular reconstruction, using prosthetic or autologous grafts, primary suture, or simple ligation without vein reconstruction. The ligation option is possible thanks to the slow growth of the tumor, allowing collateral venous circulation to develop. We present a case of an IVCL treated with radical resection without vascular reconstruction. The patient was a 48-year-old female with abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant, asthe…

[A Patient with Small Intestinal Leiomyosarcoma and Intussusception Who Underwent Single Port Surgery].

The patient was a 33-year-old female. She was referred to our hospital from a previous clinic with abdominal pain and vomiting. Contrast-enh … howed Kit- and DOG1-negtive reactions and partially α-SMA and desmin-positive reactions, suggesting leiomyosarcoma. With the establishment of an immunostaining-test-based classification, leiomyosarcoma is currently rare. In this study, we report a patient in whom single port surgery for intussusception related to small intestinal leiomyosarcoma was successful.

Diagnosis of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma extending into the main bronchus using repeated transbronchial cryobiopsy.

The diagnosis of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma using bronchoscopy is difficult, and surgical resection is often performed for definitive diagnosis and curative therapy. We report a case of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma, successfully diagnosed using repeated transbronchial cryobiopsy (TBCB). A 69-year-old-woman was found to have an oval mass in the left hilar region extending into the left main bronchus on computed tomography (CT). All transbronchial biopsy specimens were necrotic, but repeated TBCB removed the necrotic tissue from the tumour and finally led to the diagnosis of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma. …

[Treatment of vena cava inferior leiomyosarcoma with cavotomy and right renal vein neoimplantation].

Leiomyosacroma of the inferior vena cava is an extremely rare malignancy originating from the tunica media of the venous wall. Its symptoms and radiomorphological signs do not always lead to an accurate diagnosis. Histological sampling can be dangerous due to its location. Therefore the diagnosis is often a challenge for clinicians. Its treatment is primarily surgical, supplemented by radiotherapy and chemotherapy applied together or in monotherapy. In our case, an asymptomatic 74-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a tumor of the inferior caval vein located just above the right renal v

Differentiating leiomyosarcoma from leiomyoma: in support of an MR imaging predictive scoring system.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging features that best differentiate leiomyosarcoma (LMS) from leiomyoma, and to explore a scoring system to preoperatively identify those at highest risk of having LMS. METHODS: Our Institutional Review Board approved this retrospective HIPAA-compliant study with a waiver for written informed consent. Institutional Research Patient Data Registry identified patients with histopathologically-proven LMS (n = 19) or leiomyoma (n = 25) and a pelvic MRI within six months prior to surgery. Qualitative differentiatin…

Pelvic Leiomyosarcoma With Splenic Metastasis and Response Assessment by 18F-FDG PET/CT.

The pelvis is a rare site for the origin of soft tissue sarcomas, and leiomyosarcoma remains the most common soft tissue sarcoma arising in the pelvis. Pelvic leiomyosarcomas are frequently aggressive tumors, and metastatic recurrence rates are high, with the lung, peritoneum, bone, and liver being the most frequent sites. We describe the findings of serial F-FDG PET/CT in a 53-year-old woman having pelvic leiomyosarcoma with uncommon site of metastasis, emphasizing the role of F-FDG PET/CT in response assessment.

Postoperative radiotherapy-induced leiomyosarcoma in breast cancer: a case report and literature review.

Radiation-induced sarcoma (RIS) is a late complication of breast cancer radiotherapy, with a very low incidence, long latent period and poor prognosis. Among them, leiomyosarcoma after radiation is an extremely rare radiation-associated sarcoma. In this study, we report a case of radiation-induced leiomyosarcoma 2 years after postoperative radiotherapy for breast cancer. After the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma, the patient received radical resection of the left chest wall leiomyosarcoma. The patient showed no relapse or progression during the follow-up time of 1 year after operation. Rare occurr…

Molecular Bio-Imaging Probe for Non-Invasive Differentiation Between Human Leiomyoma Versus Leiomyosarcoma.

Leiomyosarcoma is the most frequent subtype of the deadly uterine sarcoma and shares many common clinical grounds with leiomyoma, which is in turn the most common solid benign uterine neoplasm. With the recent progress in minimally invasive techniques for managing leiomyomas, accurate preoperative diagnosis of uterine masses has become the most important selection criterion for the safest therapeutic option. Therefore, different imaging modalities would be playing a key role in management of uterine masses. Testing for a sarcoma-specific promoter that expresses its downstream reporter gene onl…
