Photodynamic therapy for the treatment of microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip: a case report.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with methyl aminolevulinate (MAL) is approved in Europe for the treatment of actinic keratosis and Bowen's disease, both intraepithelial forms of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A therapeutic effect of MAL-PDT has been recently suggested for superficial, microinvasive and well-differentiated cutaneous SCC. We describe the successful use of MAL-PDT in a recently observed patient with microinvasive SCC of the lower lip and review published data on the use of PDT with MAL or d-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) in cutaneous microinvasive SCC. A patient with a biopsy-proven recurr

Clinical course of multiple primary oral cancer: three of 13 cases with second primary tumor.

Of 124 patients with oral squamous cell carcinomas treated during the past 14 years, 13 developed second primary cancers with clinical symptoms in the same tissues or in organs different from those of the initial lesions during follow-up. The second primary tumors also appeared in the oral cavity in 3 of the patients, the hypopharynx in 1, the esophagus in 2, the stomach in 2, the colon in 1, the thyroid gland in 2 and the lung in 2. Of the 3 patients with second tumors in the oral cavity, 1 underwent surgery after chemo- and radiotherapy and 2 underwent laser surgery or chemo- and radiotherap

MPOWER Tobacco Control Policies' Effects on Lip and Oral Cavity Cancer Trends in MERCOSUR Countries.

BACKGROUND: As tobacco is the main risk factor for oral cancer, it is important to understand the burden of this disease in light of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. For MERCOSUR, tobacco control is a topic of interest. The aim of this study was to describe MPOWER measure scores and to evaluate the trends in lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) incidence, mortality and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), from 2005 to 2021, in MERCOSUR countries. METHODS: This is an ecological descriptive study, where the MPOWER measure scores were extracted from the Global Health Observatory of Wo

Assessment and Projections of the Burden of Lip and Oral Cancer among Indian Men.

INTRODUCTION: The oral cavity includes the lips, buccal mucosa, teeth, gingiva, anterior two third of the tongue, the floor of the mouth, and hard palate. Comprehensive data on the burden of oral cancer are lacking at the national and state levels. Therefore, analysing the changing trend in oral cancer in India over the last three decades fills a significant gap. METHODS: In this study, the number of new cancer cases, the population at risk, and the crude incidence rate were extracted from the GBD 2019 data. We used the Joinpoint regression to assess the trends in age-adjusted incidence rates

Laryngeal chondronecrosis after radiation therapy in a dog.

A 5-year-old pug presented with a soft tissue swelling on the ventral neck and moderate stridor with associated respiratory effort. This patient received hypofractionated radiotherapy for metastatic upper lip mast cell tumour and to the submandibular lymph nodes 6 months before presentation. Oral examination showed moderate elongation of the soft palate, stage III laryngeal collapse with only the right laryngeal saccule mildly everted and exuberant pale epiglottal and left pharyngeal mucosa. Staphylectomy, resection of the epiglottal mucosa and left arytenoid lateralisation were performed. One

Free-flap reconstruction of large full-thickness lip and chin defects.

OBJECTIVES: We describe our experience in the reconstruction of large 3-layer lip defects using free revascularized lower-arm and fibula flaps. METHODS: Between 2005 and 2009, nine patients underwent free-flap reconstruction after oncological surgery involving the lip and chin with or without mandibular involvement. The flap techniques are described, and postoperative functional and aesthetic results were recorded. RESULTS: There were no flap failures. All patients showed intact oral function and good aesthetic results. Two patients died of distant metastases, 8 months and 17 months after su

Ultraviolet radiation.

The major source of ultraviolet radiation is solar radiation or sunlight. However, exposure to artificial sources particularly through tanning salons is becoming more important in terms of human health effects, as use of these facilities by young people, has increased. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has noted that there is sufficient evidence from studies in animals and in man to establish ultraviolet radiation as a human carcinogen. Skin cancer has been the most commonly studied cancer site with respect to UV radiation. The nature and timing of sun exposure appear to be impor

Reconstruction of large defect of lower lip and commissure using Karapandzic flap: case report.

Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP) is a photosensitive skin disease with a high risk for developing skin malignancy. We present an 18-years-old boy with XP and recurrent basal and squamous cell carcinoma of lower lip. Because of scars from earlier resections Karapandzic circumoral advancement-rotation flap was performed. The method is suitable for defects covering 1/3 to 4/5 of the lower lip with possible involvement of commisura. 70% of the lip was resected and reconstruction was made with bilateral flaps. This reconstruction resulted in good oral muscular and sensory function. The scars followed nat

Reconstruction of the upper lip, columella and premaxilla with an extended Abbé flap: report of a case.

The resection of malignant tumours affecting the upper lip, columella, premaxilla and/or caudal septum requires reconstructive surgery, which does not always produce satisfactory results-either aesthetic or functional. We have designed a modification of the Abbé flap consisting of the extension of the distal portion of the latter over the chin, and the inclusion of a fragment of rib cartilage in this portion of the flap. The columella is reconstructed in this way, and the cartilage serves to buttress the pyramid tip and prevent its collapse. A case is reported, with good aesthetic and function

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip in renal-transplant recipients. Report of six cases.

The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip in immunosuppressed renal-transplant recipients is considerably higher than in the normal population. In addition to immunosuppressive treatment, the most important risk factors for the development of lip cancer in these patients are exposure to sunlight and smoking habits. Regular surveillance of renal-transplant recipients and early biopsy of premalignant lesions of the lip allow early detection of lip cancer. Patients should also be advised to avoid unprotected exposure to sunlight, to use appropriate sunscreens and to stop smoking.

Brachytherapy for lower lip epidermoid cancer: tumoral and treatment factors influencing recurrences and complications.

From 1972 to 1991, 237 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip were treated by exclusive LDR brachytherapy (192Ir). There were 158 T1, 61 T2, 17 T3 and 1 T4 with 231 N0, 3 N1 and 3 N2 patients. The actuarial values at 5 years for local and regional controls, overall and specific survivals were 95%, 91%, 74% and 91%. Salvage treatment increased local control up to 99% and regional control to 94%. No heterolabial recurrence has been observed since the entire lip is treated, even for small tumors. The regional control depends closely on the thickness of the labial tumor (> or = 1 c

[Hard x-ray therapy with special reference to postoperative irradiation of breast carcinoma].

Five-year-experiences have shown that a considerably intensified tolerance of the skin and an absorption equability of tissues and bones and muscles are obtained with the hard ray roentgen irradiator, RT 305, for half-value depths from 20 mm to 70 mm H-2O and half-value thickness to about 7 mm Cu. By means of a rod anode tube of 300 kV with a super-normal filtration to 3.5 mm Pb, a hard and nearly monochromatic radiation, which already possesses the above mentioned advantages of the ultra-hard ray therapy with an effective energy about 0.2 MeV, appears. The application of this hard ray therapy

Malignant melanoma of the lip spreading in a pagetoid manner into the minor salivary glands.

We describe a malignant melanoma of the lower lip that upon recurrence extended in a pagetoid manner into the ducts of the oral minor salivary glands. Immunohistochemistry with antibodies to MART-1 and HMB-45 confirmed that the atypical cells in the ducts of the salivary glands were indeed melanoma cells. Pathologists involved in staging of oral melanoma are urged to look out for this previously unreported mode of spread of labial malignant melanoma.

[Experience in using the small PMB-6E betatron for the radiation treatment of oncological patients].

The paper is concerned with the first results of treatment of 46 patients with tumors of the skin, oral mucosa and other sites using the Soviet small-size PMB-6E betatron with the energy of fast electrons at 6 MeV. The performance of the unit and different variants of dosimetric therapeutic plans of the fast electron beam are presented. Electron therapy with the energy of 6 MeV was mostly used in patients with head and neck tumors. Intra-oral irradiation with fast electrons was given to 4 patients with cancer of the moving part of the tongue and 5 patients with cancer of the fundic oral mucosa

Malignant mesothelioma in subjects with Marfan's syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: only an apparent association?

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm which could be favored by an hereditary predisposing factor. So far, malignant mesothelioma have never been described in patients with hereditary diseases of the connective tissue. Here, we report some cases of mesothelioma affecting subjects who were not exposed to inhalation of asbestos. One of these subjects was affected by Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, whereas in two brothers, mesothelioma was associated with Marfan's syndrome. The observation of the same histologic subtype of mesothelioma in two brothers and the coexistence of two pathologic conditions

Burkitt's lymphoma presenting as lower lip paraesthesia in a 24 year old Nigerian. Case report.

An unusual case of stage D Burkitt's lymphoma in a 24 year old Nigerian female undergraduate is reported. There was a four month history of left lower lip paraesthesia followed three months later by a slowly progressive 'pimple-sized' nodular mandibular swelling arising from the mental foramen region. A full-blown, rapidly developing abdominal mass manifested only three weeks after a biopsy of the mandibular swelling. Aspiration of the latter and a histologic report of the mandibular mass confirmed Burkitt's lymphoma. The patient responded very well to appropriate chemotherapy. Clinicians shou

[Pigmented lesions of the oral cavity].

Pigmented lesions of the oral cavity are of multiple origin. They can be subdivided as follows: non tumoral pigmentations, non melanin pigmented tumors or tumor-like lesions, benign melanin pigmented tumors and malignant melanomas. Among non tumoral pigmented lesions, some of them show melanin deposits: they can be associated with a systemic disease (Peutz Jeghers syndrome, Addison's disease) or have a medicamentous origin, or belong to a lichen migricans. Non tumoral and non melanin pigmentations are principally due to a heavy metal accumulation or an accidental tatoo arising after tooth trea
