We determined the magnesium content for two different Burkitt's lymphoma cell lines (EW 36 and CA 46) after transfer to new media for 7 consecutive days. Aliquots of the cell culture were washed and the cell pellet was obtained by centrifugation and lysed with distilled water with and without the addition of 0.25% lanthanum oxide. Magnesium was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The addition of lanthanum permitted the detection of between 8 and 40% more magnesium. Muscle weakness and abnormal electrical activity of muscle cells have been described in magnesium-depleted patients and animals. The cellular mechanisms by which magnesium depletion causes the skeletal myopathy are not known. We review here the available clinical and experimental data on the effects of magnesium on: skeletal muscle cellular bioenergetics; excitation-contraction coupling, and biochemical and functional integrity of the cellular membrane. The data suggest that abnormalities in one or more of the above pathways may mediate the myopathy of magnesium depletion.

Hypermagnesiuria and hypomagnesaemia are complications of prolonged therapy with loop or distal tubule diuretics. Local and circulating catecholamine levels rise in response to hypomagnesaemia and to the haemodynamic effects of diuretics. The result is an increase in the plasma lipoprotein fraction, thought to constitute a cardiovascular risk factor and partly dependent on dietary and other variables.

This prospective case-control study explored the association between urinary magnesium levels and acute urinary retention (AUR) in individuals presenting to the emergency department. Forty-six participants, comprising 23 cases and 23 age- and sex-matched controls, underwent urine analysis for magnesium, calcium, and creatinine concentrations. Magnesium sulfate given to women before birth at <30 weeks' gestation reduces the risk of cerebral palsy in their children. Our study aimed to assess the impact of a local quality improvement programme, primarily using plan-do-study-act cycles, to increase the use of antenatal magnesium sulfate. Hypomagnesemia is commonly observed in heart failure, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Low serum magnesium (Mg) is a predictor for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality and treating Mg deficiency may help prevent cardiovascular disease. In this review, we discuss the possible mechanisms by which Mg deficiency plays detrimental roles in cardiovascular diseases and review the results of clinical trials of Mg supplementation for heart failure, arrhythmias and other cardiovascular diseases.
