Magnesium-deficiency-induced alterations of gas exchange, major metabolites and key enzymes differ among roots, and lower and upper leaves of Citrus sinensis seedlings.

Magnesium (Mg)-deficiency is a widespread problem adversely affecting the quality and yield of crops, including citrus. 'Xuegan' [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] seedlings were irrigated every other day with nutrient solution at an Mg concentration of 0 mM (Mg-deficiency) or 1 mM (Mg-sufficiency) for 16 weeks. Thereafter, biomass, leaf mass per area, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), pigments in the upper and lower leaves, Mg, gas exchange, organic acids, nonstructural carbohydrates, total soluble proteins, amino acids, phenolics and anthocyanins, and key enzymes related

Short-term magnesium deficiency downregulates telomerase, upregulates neutral sphingomyelinase and induces oxidative DNA damage in cardiovascular tissues: relevance to atherogenesis, cardiovascular diseases and aging.

1) short-term dietary deficiency of magnesium (Mg; 21 days) in rats (MgD) would result in a downregulation of telomerase in cardiac and aortic smooth muscle cells, 2) low levels of Mg(2+) added to drinking water (DW) would either prevent or greatly reduce the downregulation of telomerase in MgD, 3) MgD in rats would cause an upregulation of neutral-sphingomyelinase (N-SMAse) and p53, 4) short-term MgD would result in oxidation of DNA in diverse cardiac muscle and aortic smooth muscle cells as exemplified by measurement of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG), and 5) cross-talk between telomerase,

Magnesium deficiency suppresses cell cycle progression mediated by increase in transcriptional activity of p21(Cip1) and p27(Kip1) in renal epithelial NRK-52E cells.

Lack of magnesium suppresses cell growth, but the molecular mechanism is not examined in detail. We examined the effect of extracellular magnesium deficiency on cell cycle progression and the expression of cell cycle regulators in renal epithelial NRK-52E cells. In synchronized cells caused by serum-starved method, over 80% cells were distributed in G1 phase. Cell proliferation and percentage of the cells in S phase in the presence of MgCl(2) were higher than those in the absence of MgCl(2) , suggesting that magnesium is involved in the cell cycle progression from G1 to S phase. After serum ad…

Magnesium deficiency-dependent audiogenic seizures (MDDASs) in adult mice: a nutritional model for discriminatory screening of anticonvulsant drugs and original assessment of neuroprotection properties.

A great many animal models for audiogenic seizures have been described. The extent to which these models may provide insight into neuroscience fields such as abnormal locomotor behavior (wild running), seizures and anticonvulsants, and neuroinsults and neuroprotectors is examined here by our study of magnesium deficiency-dependent audiogenic seizures (MDDASs) in adult mice. MDDASs were induced in all of the eight tested adult murine strains and are presented as a sequence of four successive components (latency, wild running, convulsion, and recovery phase periods). Compared with several classi…

Evaluation of the performance of Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA)/MgF2 bilayer coating on biodegradable high-purity magnesium in a femoral condyle defect model in rabbits.

The two most critical factors in promoting the clinical translation of magnesium (Mg) are reducing its degradation rate and improving its osteogenesis. In this study, a Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA)/MgF2 bilayer coating was prepared on high-purity magnesium (HP Mg) rods by fluorination and hydrothermal treatment. Scanning electron microscope showed that the thickness of the bilayer coating was 3.78 μm and that the surface morphology was nanoscale. In an in vivo experiment on femoral condyle defects in rabbits, the serum magnesium ion levels of rabbits were always in the normal range after

A triple-risk model for the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and the apparent life-threatening episode (ALTE): the stressed magnesium deficient weanling rat.

A triple risk model for the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) as described by Filiano and Kinney involves the intersection of three risks: … E, showing pertinent physical, electrocardiographic and pathological features. In the weanling rat, magnesium deficiency appears to be the single common pathway upon which multiple stressors may impinge to produce sudden death during the relatively brief critical developmental period, while magnesium supplements may protect the animal. If significant magnesium deficie …

Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins from magnesium-deficient rats are more susceptible to oxidation by cells and promote proliferation of cultured vascular smooth muscle cells.

An important characteristic of hyperlipaemia associated with magnesium deficiency in rats is the postprandial accumulation of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TGRLP). The present investigation was performed to determine the susceptibility of TGRLP isolated from magnesium-deficient rats to metal ion and cell dependent peroxidation and the effect of these lipoproteins on cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). TGRLP were isolated by sequential ultracentrifugation from plasma of control and magnesium-deficient rats fed for 8 d on adequate or magnesium-deficient diets. Magnesium-deficient ani…

Migraine and Its Association with Hyperactivity of Cell Membranes in the Course of Latent Magnesium Deficiency-Preliminary Study of the Importance of the Latent Tetany Presence in the Migraine Pathogenesis.

So far, there is no consistent and convincing theory explaining the pathogenesis of migraines. Vascular disorders, the effect of oxidative stress on neurons, and the contribution of magnesium-calcium deficiencies in triggering cortical depression and abnormal glutaminergic neurotransmission are taken into account. However, there are no reliable publications confirming the role of dietary deficits of magnesium and latent tetany as factors triggering migraine attacks. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of latent magnesium deficiency assessed with the electrophysiological tetany t…

Changes in the alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1) and inorganic pyrophosphatase (EC 3.6.1.1) activities of rat tissues during magnesium deficiency. The importance of controlling feeding pattern.

1. The adoption of a meal-eating pattern of feeding by rats altered the alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1) activity in serum and liver. It was therefore necessary to regulate the feeding pattern of both magnesium-deficient rats and control animals receiving a Mg-adequate diet in order to study the effect of the deficiency. 2. Mg deficiency decreased the activities of alkaline phosphatase and inorganic pyrophosphatase (EC 3.6.1.1) in serum, kidney and tibia, but increased them in spleen. 3. Addition of a standard concentration of exogenous Mg to tissue extracts usually increased the activity of

Pyrimidine nucleotides impair phosphoribosylpyrophosphate (PRPP) synthetase subunit aggregation by sequestering magnesium. A mechanism for the decreased PRPP synthetase activity in hereditary erythrocyte pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase deficiency.

The activity of phosphoribosylpyrophosphate (PRPP) synthetase (ATP: D-ribose-5-phosphate pyrophosphotransferase, EC 2.7.6.1) is decreased in the erythrocyte in hereditary pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (P5N) deficiency. Given the increased pyrimidine nucleotide content of the P5N-deficient erythrocyte, we evaluated the effects of prototypic pyrimidine nucleotides on the activity of PRPP synthetase. In normal hemolysate a 1.0 mM combination of cytidine tri-, di- and monophosphate (CTP/CDP/CMP) inhibited PRPP synthetase activity and changed the ribose 5-phosphate (R5P) saturation curve from a hyperb

Severe zinc deficiency: effects on the distribution of nine elements (potassium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese) in regions of the rat brain.

The effect of severe zinc deficiency on the distribution of nine elements (potassium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese) in brain regions (olfactory lobes, right and left hippocampi, cerebellum and the rest of the brain) has been studied. After male rats (30 days old) were fed a zinc-deficient diet for 28 days, the zinc concentration of most brain parts was similar to zinc-adequate control values. Olfactory lobe zinc, on the other hand, was slightly depressed. However, the levels of other metals were dependent on zinc nutriture. Zinc deficiency caused an

Splice-variant 1 of the ancient domain protein 2 (ACDP2) complements the magnesium-deficient growth phenotype of Salmonella enterica sv. typhimurium strain MM281.

Evidence arguing for the existence of genes encoding for proteins directly involved in the transport of Mg2+ through the cytoplasmic membrane have accumulated over the last few years. Gene ACDP2 (ancient conserved domain protein 2; old name CNNM2, cyclin M2) is one such gene. ACDP2 is a distant homologue of the bacterial gene corC, which is known to be involved in cobalt resistance. We have previously demonstrated that the over-expression of the human Mg2+ carrier SLC41A1 partly complements the Mg2+-dependent growth deficiency of Salmonella strain MM281 (triple disruptant in genes: mgtA, mgtB

Enhanced contractile response to phenylephrine and increased density of [3H]PN200-110 binding sites in thoracic aorta isolated from dietary magnesium-deficient rats.

The present study was undertaken to examine whether the enhanced contractile response to phenylephrine observed in thoracic aorta isolated from dietary magnesium-deficient rats depends on an increased density of alpha 1-adrenoceptor or calcium channels. Adult male Wistar rats were fed with a magnesium-deficient diet (0.001 per cent magnesium) for 30 days with control groups (0.07 per cent magnesium). The contractile response to phenylephrine was significantly inhibited by nifedipine in both aortas without endothelium, and the degree of the inhibition was significantly greater in magnesium-defi

Phosphorus (P)-magnesium (Mg) interaction in citrus growth: high P promotes new shoot growth while accelerating old leaf symptoms in young navel orange plants under Mg deficiency.

BACKGROUND: The interaction between phosphorus (P) and magnesium (Mg) significantly influences citrus productivity, especially under Mg deficiency. This study investigated how P availability affects growth, physiological performance, and nutrient partitioning in young navel orange plants under different Mg supplies. METHODS: A factorial experiment was conducted using sand-cultured navel orange plants subjected to two Mg levels (0 mM as deficient and 1 mM as sufficient) and three P levels (0.2, 1, and 5 mM, supplied as KH2PO4/NaH2PO4, representing low, moderate, and high supply, respectively).

Dietary magnesium intake as modifier of the association between vitamin D deficiency and risk of anemia in the US children aged 2-14 years: A cross-sectional study.

Vitamin D deficiency and magnesium deficiency are both associated with an increased risk of anemia. However, the impact of dietary magnesium intake on the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and anemia risk has yet to be determined. In this study, 11,471 children aged 2 to 14 years were enrolled using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 to 2018. The participants were divided into low and high magnesium intake groups based on a quantile cutoff of < 208.5 and ≥ 208.5 mg/d, respectively. Participants who were vitamin D deficiency had an increased risk of anem…

Early transcriptomic changes induced by magnesium deficiency in Arabidopsis thaliana reveal the alteration of circadian clock gene expression in roots and the triggering of abscisic acid-responsive genes.

*Plant growth and development ultimately depend on environmental variables such as the availability of essential minerals. Unravelling how nutrients affect gene expression will help to understand how they regulate plant growth. *This study reports the early transcriptomic response to magnesium (Mg) deprivation in Arabidopsis. Whole-genome transcriptome was studied in the roots and young mature leaves 4, 8 and 28 h after the removal of Mg from the nutrient solution. *The highest number of regulated genes was first observed in the roots. Contrary to other mineral deficiencies, Mg depletion did n
