OBJECTIVE: Metabolic acidosis is common in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Studies suggest that correction of acidosis may improve nutritional status and patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of increasing delivered bicarbonate dose from 35 mmol/L to 39 mmol/L with respect to nutrition-related outcomes in maintenance hemodialysis patients (MHD).

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of interferon/ribavirin combination therapy in methadone maintenance (MM) patients with active hepatitis C (HCV). End-of-treatment results are presented as an interim analysis of efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: In Austria, methadone, buprenorphine as well as oral slow-release morphine are used for the treatment of opioid dependence. This controlled examination marks the first time that oral slow-release morphine hydrochloride is applied for maintenance therapy in opioid dependent subjects.

Porphyrin studies were performed on 85 chronic renal failure patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Seventy-two patients with recently healed gastric ulcers were entered into a double-blind, placebo-controlled, six-month maintenance trial to assess whether sucralfate, 1 g in the morning and 2 g at night, reduces the propensity for recurrent ulceration. The histological features of 40 spleens surgically removed from maintenance haemodialysis patients are reported. Twenty-four of the 40 (60%) showed massive iron loading and a significant direct correlation was found between iron loading and the amount of intravenous iron dextran administered. Since parenteral iron dextran appears to be a major factor in causing iron overload in haemodialysis patients its use as a method of iron replacement in these patients would appear inappropriate.
