Strain-specific Plasmodium falciparum growth inhibition among Malian children immunized with a blood-stage malaria vaccine.

The blood-stage malaria vaccine FMP2.1/AS02A, comprised of recombinant Plasmodium falciparum apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) and the adjuvant system AS02A, had strain-specific efficacy against clinical malaria caused by P. falciparum with the vaccine strain 3D7 AMA1 sequence. To evaluate a potential correlate of protection, we measured the ability of participant sera to inhibit growth of 3D7 and FVO strains in vitro using high-throughput growth inhibition assay (GIA) testing. Sera from 400 children randomized to receive either malaria vaccine or a control rabies vaccine were assessed at basel

[Foreign bodies of the esophagus in the adult: report of 26 cases].

INTRODUCTION: The foreign bodies of the oesophagus see each other at any age. They are more frequent at the child's than at the adult. The cutting foreign bodies can constitute an urgency because of the risk of oesophagienne perforing or bleeding. OBJECTIVE: Bring report the epidemiological and clinical profile of the foreign bodies of the oesophagus in our practice, and underline the difficulties of coverage(care) at the adult. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A forward-looking study was realized of April, 2007 in Mars 2009 in the service ENT of the University hospital (CHU) Gabriel TOURE of Bamako con

Ecological studies on the intermediate host snails and the relevance to schistosomiasis control.

A detailed knowledge of distribution patterns of schistosome intermediate hosts and their population dynamics and factors affecting these patterns will provide useful information about the possibilities and desirability of conducting snail control measures in various transmission situations. On the basis of various case studies the association between the occurrence of human water contacts and the presence of schistosome intermediate hosts or infections in the intermediate hosts is illustrated. Other parameters affecting snail distribution patterns and density fluctuations are discussed. It is

Geospatial mapping of drug-resistant tuberculosis prevalence in Africa at national and sub-national levels.

OBJECTIVES: To map subnational and local prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) across Africa. METHODS: We assembled a geolocate … th Africa, while the lowest prevalence was found in Gabon, the Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, and Mali. Marked subnational variation in DR-TB prevalence was noted, where 91 subnational areas across 12 countries had prevalence rates higher than their respective national averages. Factors such as mean temperature (β = 2.01; 95% CrI: 1.21, 3.42), popula …

A rare case of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis revealing Graves' disease in a young Malian.

Sporadic thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare muscle disorder that manifests with abrupt muscle weakness and hypokalemia associated with hyperthyroidism. It is mostly reported in the Asian population, and rare in Caucasians. Only few cases have been reported in people with black ancestry. Here, we report a rare case of thyrotoxic periodic paralysis revealing Graves' disease in a young Malian. A 17-year-old man was admitted in the Neurology clinic with rapid proximal tetraplegia that started after strenuous physical activities at the school. Clinical examination confirmed the proximal …

Symbiotic effectiveness and ecologically adaptive traits of native rhizobial symbionts of Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc.) in Africa and their relationship with phylogeny.

Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea L. Verdc.) is an indigenous, drought-tolerant, underutilized African food legume, with the ability to fix atmospheric N2 in symbiosis with soil bacteria called rhizobia. The aim of this study was to assess the morpho-physiological, symbiotic and phylogenetic characteristics of rhizobia nodulating Bambara groundnut in Ghana, Mali and South Africa. The morpho-physiologically diverse isolates tested were also found to exhibit differences in functional efficiency and phylogenetic positions. Based on Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC)-PCR ban…

Psychopathology in the Dogon Plateau: an assessment using the QDSM and principal components analysis.

BACKGROUND: The present paper reports the findings of principal components analysis performed on the basis of answers to the Questionnaire pour le Depistage en Santé Mentale (QDSM) administered to subjects from the Bandiagara plateau (Mali), who had been evaluated in a previously published report. METHODS: The study sample was made up of 466 subjects (253 males, 213 females), 273 of whom belonged to the Dogon ethnic group, 163 were Peul and the remaining 30 belonged to other groups (Sonrai, Bozo, Tuareg, Bambara). All subjects were submitted to QDSM, a structured interview derived from the Se…

Seroepidemiological investigations of onchocerciasis in a hyperendemic area of West Africa.

Immunological study of individuals (aged 4 to 70 years) living in an area of Mali hyperendemic for onchocerciasis revealed an 83% prevalence of skin microfilariae (mf). Microfilariae counts from skin snips were highly age-dependent. Screening for concomitant helminth infections showed a low prevalence of hookworms and Mansonella (Dipetalonema) perstans, but neither schistosomiasis nor bancroftian filariasis. Immunological results revealed strong correlation between radioallergosorbent test (RAST) and skin test (5 and 50 ng adult O. volvulus extract), between RAST and total IgE, and between IFA…

A rare parasitic infection in Turkey: schistosomiasis. Case report.

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic disease. It is endemic in tropical and subtropical countries mainly in Africa and the eastern Mediterranean region. We report a case of a 37-year-old male who attended our hospital for terminal hematuria and irritative voiding symptoms. Schistosoma haematobium eggs were found in his urine sediment. He underwent transurethral resection of the bladder. Pathological study confirmed the existence of vesical schistosomiasis. S. haematobium cases are rarely seen in Turkey. Epidemiological and clinical significance of S. haematobium has been discussed.

Effects of concomitant Schistosoma haematobium infection on the serum cytokine levels elicited by acute Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection in Malian children.

Polyparasitism is common in the developing world, and interactions that alter disease severity may occur. We previously demonstrated that infection with Schistosoma hematobium was associated with protection against Plasmodium falciparum infection in children who were 4 to 8 years old. In this study, we determined whether underlying helminth infections affected the cytokine responses to acute falciparum malaria. A total of 338 schistosomiasis-positive [Sch(+)] children who were 4 to 14 years old were matched by age, residence, and sex with 338 schistosomiasis-negative [Sch(-)] children and moni

[Reduced morbidity of schistosomiasis: report from an expert workshop on the control of schistosomiasis held at CERMES (15-18 February 2000, Niamey, Niger)].

Schistosomiasis remains a problem for public health in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite past efforts, cases have not decreased significantly. Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni are endemic in all the West African countries. The distribution of both parasites is focal. During a workshop held at CERMES in Niamey, in February 2000, a group of experts recommended that schistosomiasis control be considered as a public health priority in all the endemic West African countries, and National Control Programmes rapidly implemented. The objective of these control programmes would be to reduce schistosomi
