Real-time infrared thermography detection of magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia in a murine model under a non-uniform field configuration.

PURPOSE: Magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia consists of an increase of the temperature of magnetic nanoparticles (heat centres) due to the interaction of their magnetic moments with an alternating magnetic field. In vivo experiments using this method usually use a few fibre-optic thermometers inserted in the animal body to monitor the heat deposition. As a consequence, only a few points of the 3D temperature distribution can be monitored by this invasive procedure. It is the purpose of this work to show that non-invasive infrared thermography is able to detect, in real time, magnetic nanoparti

Disproportionation and nuclease activity of bis[2-ethyl-2-hydroxybutanoato(2-)]oxochromate(V) in neutral aqueous solutions.

Complex 1, [Cr(V)O(ehba)2]- (ehba = 2-ethyl-2-hydroxybutanoate(2-)) is the most studied model compound of relevance to the biological activity of Cr(V) with regard to Cr-induced cancers. The first detailed kinetic study of disproportionation of 1 under neutral pH conditions (pH 6.0-8.0, [NaClO4] = 1.0 M, 37 degrees C) is reported. Kinetic data were collected by stopped-flow and conventional UV-vis spectroscopies and processed by the global analysis method. The disproportionation, which follows the stoichiometry 3Cr(V) --> 2Cr(VI) + Cr(III) (1), leads to release of 5 mol of H+/3 mol of Cr(V). R

Interrogation of the Substrate Profile and Catalytic Properties of the Phosphotriesterase from Sphingobium sp. Strain TCM1: An Enzyme Capable of Hydrolyzing Organophosphate Flame Retardants and Plasticizers.

The most familiar organophosphorus compounds are the neurotoxic insecticides and nerve agents. A related group of organophosphorus compounds, the phosphotriester plasticizers and flame retardants, has recently become widely used. Unlike the neurotoxic phosphotriesters, the plasticizers and flame retardants lack an easily hydrolyzable bond. While the hydrolysis of the neurotoxic organophosphates by phosphotriesterase enzymes is well-known, the lack of a labile bond in the flame retardants and plasticizers renders them inert to typical phosphotriesterases. A phosphotriesterase from Sphingobium s

Topically applied manganese-porphyrins BMX-001 and BMX-010 display a significant anti-inflammatory response in a mouse model of allergic dermatitis.

In this study, we topically administered two antioxidant compounds, the manganese-porphyrin-derivatives BMX-001 and BMX-010, in a mouse model of allergic dermatitis and compared the efficacy for reduction of itch and inflammation. In vitro effects of BMX-001 and BMX-010 on keratinocytes, bone marrow derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) and T-cells were initially analysed. For assessment of scratching behaviour, BMX-001 and BMX-010 (0.01 and 0.1 %) were topically applied 16 h and/or 1 h before compound 48/80 or toluene-2,4,-diisocyanate (TDI) challenge in a TDI induced mouse dermatitis model. Paramagnetic 13C and 15N NMR analyses of cyanide- (13C15N-) ligated ferric peroxidases: the push effect, not pull effect, modulates the compound I formation rate.

Paramagnetic (13)C and (15)N NMR spectroscopy of heme-bound cyanide ((13)C(15)N) was utilized to quantitatively distinguish the electron donor effect (the push effect) from the proximal histidine and hydrogen-bonding effect (the pull effect) from the distal amino acid residues in cytochrome c peroxidase (CcP), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), lignin peroxidase (LiP), and manganese peroxidase (MnP). Paramagnetic (13)C NMR signals of heme-bound (13)C(15)N of these peroxidases were observed in a wide range, -3501 ppm (CcP), -3563 ppm (APX), -3823 ppm (MnP), and -3826 ppm (LiP), while paramagnetic (15)

Multimodal lung cancer theranostics via manganese phosphate/quercetin particle.

The diagnosis and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer in clinical settings face serious challenges, particularly due to the lack of integration between the two processes, which limit real-time adjustments in treatment plans based on the patient's condition and drive-up treatment costs. Here, we present a multifunctional pH-sensitive core-shell nanoparticle containing quercetin (QCT), termed AHA@MnP/QCT NPs, designed for the simultaneous diagnosis and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. Mechanistic studies indicated that QCT and Mn2+ exhibited excellent peroxidase-like (POD-like) activ

Effects of pulmonary exposure to chemically-distinct welding fumes on neuroendocrine markers of toxicity.

Exposure to welding fumes may result in disorders of the pulmonary, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. Welders are also at a greater risk of developing symptoms similar to those seen in individuals with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. In welders, there are studies that suggest that alterations in circulating prolactin concentrations may be indicative of injury to the dopamine (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra. The goal of these studies was to use an established model of welding particulate exposure to mimic the effects of welding fume inhalation on reproductive functions. Since previ

High-Temperature Layered Modification of Mn2In2Se5.

Layered chalcogenides are interesting from the point of view of the formation of two-dimensional magnetic systems for relevant applications in spintronics. High-spin Mn2+ or Fe3+ cations with five unpaired electrons are promising in the search for compounds with interesting magnetic properties. In this study, a new layered modification of the Mn2In2Se5 compound from the A2B2X5 family ("225") was synthesized and investigated. A phase transition to the polymorph with primitive trigonal lattice was recorded at a temperature of 711 °C, which was confirmed by simultaneous thermal analysis, X-ray po

Adaptations of the Genus Bradyrhizobium to Selected Elements, Heavy Metals and Pesticides Present in the Soil Environment.

Rhizobial bacteria perform a number of extremely important functions in the soil environment. In addition to fixing molecular nitrogen and transforming it into a form available to plants, they participate in the circulation of elements and the decomposition of complex compounds present in the soil, sometimes toxic to other organisms. This review article describes the molecular mechanisms occurring in the most diverse group of rhizobia, the genus Bradyrhizobium, allowing these bacteria to adapt to selected substances found in the soil. Firstly, the adaptation of bradyrhizobia to low and high co

Direct influence of antidepressants on GTP binding protein of adenylate cyclase in cell membranes of the cerebral cortex of rats.

Recently, it has been suggested that antidepressant drugs exert their pharmacological action through functional changes in the adrenergic-receptor coupled adenylate cyclase system. In the present research, we examined the direct effects of antidepressants on adenylate cyclase (A-cyclase) activity by in vitro incubation of cell membranes from the cerebral cortex of rats with these drugs. All antidepressants examined, such as imipramine, clomipramine, amitriptyline, desipramine, mianserin and zimelidine inhibited A-cyclase in a dose dependent manner. Antidepressants did not exert any influence o

Trace element concentrations in nesting flatback turtles (Natator depressus) from Curtis Island, Queensland, Australia.

The blood and eggs of the flatback turtle (Natator depressus) sampled when nesting at Curtis Island, Queensland, Australia. In the blood, zinc was present at the highest concentration of 151.15 ± 1.45 μg/L followed by copper (7.74 ± 0.09 μg/L). Lead was found only in some individuals. The measured trace elements in the blood were maternally transferred into the eggs. Other metals and metalloids detected in eggs were chromium, manganese, arsenic and selenium. Eggs showed a more complex trace element profile than blood, suggesting that they provided more representative tissues for determining ma

Enhancement of Mn2+, Fe2+ and NH4+-N removal by biochar synergistic strains combined with activated sludge in real wastewater treatment.

Acinetobacter sp. AL-6 combining with biochar was adapted in activated sludge (AS & co-system) to decontaminate Mn2+, Fe2+ and NH4+-N, and treat activated sludge (AS) for its activity and settling performance improvement. Specifically, the co-system promoted the growth of bacteria in the activated sludge, thus increasing its ability to nitrify and adsorb Mn2+ and Fe2+, resulting in the removal of high concentrations of NH4+-N, Mn2+, Fe2+ and COD in the reactor by 100%, 100%, 100%, and 96.8%, respectively. And the pH of wastewater was increased from 4 to 8.5 by co-system also facilitated the pr

Neurological and neurophysiological examinations of workers occupationally exposed to manganese.

The nervous system is the major target of the toxic effect of manganese (Mn) and its compounds. Nowadays, neurological diagnostics is directed towards early detection of symptoms and abortive forms, and the cases of serious damage of the nervous system are no longer reported. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of manganese on the functions of the nervous system in workers exposed to this metal in the ship and electrical industries. The study covered a selected group of 75 male workers (mean age 39.17 yr +/- 9.79; range 20-56 yr), including 62 welders and fitters, as well as

Mn2O3 NPs-induced liver injury is potentially associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis in broiler chicken.

Mn2O3 nanometer particles(Mn2O3 NPs), a new material, is widely used in medicine, electrochemical sensing and energy storage fields. The widespread use of Mn2O3 NPs has caused health concerns, and it is necessary to clarify the toxic mechanism of Mn2O3 NPs exposure. Our findings showed that Mn2O3 NPs exposure could lead to liver histological abnormalities, mitochondrial dysfunction in liver, as well as mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis, autophagy and mitochondrial dynamics disorder, and eventually lead to liver injury. At the same time, the ileal epithelium suffered physiological damage and inf
