Premature loss of teeth leads to an inevitable egression of opposing teeth. Schuchardt osteotomy is a quick and efficient alternative to create a prosthetic space compatible with prosthetic rehabilitation. During the surgical procedure, it is difficult, if not impossible, to preserve the integrity of the sinus membrane and thus to proceed at the same time with a bone graft in the adjacent sub-sinus area to address a vertical alveolar deficiency. In this technical note, the author describes a new technique by combining a sinus suspension during a Schuchardt osteotomy. This innovative approach a

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to present a case series treated with an atraumatic procedure for maxillary sinus lift by crestal approach. This technique avoids the use of classical osteotomes, thus decreasing complications due to percussive and vibratory forces.
METHODS: Three cases of partial edentulism in the distal maxillae with inadequate bone volume are treated by using SinCrest procedure (Meta, Reggio Emilia, Italy). With the guide of surgical templates, the sinus lift was performed, and implants were placed during the same procedure. After 6 months an X-ray was taken to check t

INTRODUCTION: Management of zygomatic bone fractures is still debated. Method and delay for intervention has to be chosen considering respective issues of operative or conservative treatments, especially hemorrhagic complications. The maxillofacial surgeon must be able to determine life-threatening situations and to react appropriately.
CASES REPORT: We report 2 cases of external carotid branches pseudoaneurysm leading to massive hemorrhage after early or delayed zygomatic fracture surgery. The first patient underwent open reduction of fracture by intraoral approach. An active bleeding occurr

In patients with cranio-maxillofacial trauma and in corrections of cranio-facial anomalies submental intubation may be used during surgery and postoperatively. In the period June 2001-May 2002 submental intubation was performed on five patients with cranio-maxillofacial trauma and on two patients with cranio-facial anomalies (Dubowitz syndrome (LeFort II osteotomy and distraction) in one patient and cheilognathopalatoschisis (Le Fort I osteotomy and distraction) in the other). In accordance with the literature the submental intubation technique was a useful, fast and safe technique which provi

There have been reports on the migration of teeth or implants into the maxillary sinus. We know of only one report on the migration of a gutta-percha point that had been used to fill a root canal into the ethmoid sinus. We report such a case treated with an endoscopically assisted procedure for removal of the foreign body and contemporary endodontic surgical treatment of the tooth.

Pneumosinus dilatans is a rare disease characterized by an evolutive hyperpneumatization of the sinuses. The frontal sinus is most often involved, but any other sinus of the face can be affected. Three cases of pneumosinus dilatans, including two in the frontal sinus and one in the maxillary sinus, are reported. Modelling osteoplasty without drainage of the sinus was performed in all three cases and yielded satisfactory and stable results with a minimal period of observation of 5 years. The long-term effectiveness of modelling osteoplasty must be taken into account to study the physiopathology

AIM: To evaluate implant stability and histological outcomes after osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) procedure, and to compare new bone formation and implant osseointegration with and without grafting.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: OSFE with simultaneous implant placement was conducted bilaterally on 6 Labrador dogs. Twenty-four implants were placed. The right side sinus (Group 1) was grafted with biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP), whereas the left side (Group 2) was left without any grafting materials. The animals were euthanized 8 and 24 weeks after surgery for histological and histomorphometri

PURPOSE: The objectives of the study were to identify the parameters related to skeletal stability after orthognathic surgery in skeletal Class III malocclusion using a surgery-first approach and to analyze the factors correlated with surgical relapse.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five consecutive patients were included. Serial cephalometric radiographs were traced and superimposed to investigate surgical stability at the initial examination, 1 week postoperatively, and after orthodontic debonding (12.22 mo after surgery). Patient grouping was based on the amount of horizontal relapse at the

Excessive gingival display (EGD) associated with hyperdivergent skeletal Class II malocclusion represents a complex clinical condition requiring comprehensive interdisciplinary management. Successful treatment depends on accurate identification of the underlying skeletal, dentoalveolar, periodontal, and soft-tissue etiologic factors, combined with close coordination between orthodontic, orthognathic, and periodontal procedures. This case report describes the interdisciplinary management of severe EGD in an adult patient using presurgical orthodontics, bimaxillary orthognathic surgery, secondar

INTRODUCTION: Surgical treatment of maxillary tumours is often highly complex. The three-dimensional anatomy of the mid-face renders both correct intraoperative orientation and adequate oncological safety difficult to obtain. Recently, computer-assisted techniques and intraoperative navigation have been applied to oncological surgery treating head and neck cancer. However, only a few studies have explored whether preoperative virtual resection planning and intraoperative control of resection margins allow assessment of the surgical margins of the tumour. In our present feasibility study, we de

OBJECTIVE: To propose a better statistical method of predicting postsurgery soft tissue response in Class II patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects comprise 80 patients who had undergone surgical correction of severe Class II malocclusions. Using 228 predictor and 64 soft tissue response variables, we applied two multivariate methods of forming prediction equations, the conventional ordinary least squares (OLS) method and the partial least squares (PLS) method. After fitting the equation, the bias and a mean absolute prediction error were calculated. To evaluate the predictive performa

Preservation rhinoplasty is a growing area of interest among rhinoplasty surgeons. Dorsal preservation-a tenet of preservation rhinoplasty-is predicated on maintaining the integrity of the nasal midvault and effecting aesthetic change through alterations to the bony nasal pyramid and underlying septum. A challenge that is unique to dorsal preservation is the phenomenon of hump recurrence, because of the existence of anatomical blocking points. Blocking points are resistant tensile forces that either impede dorsal lowering intraoperatively or push the dorsum back to its native convexity over ti

The complexity of treatment of faciocraniosynostosis justifies the treatment in a reference center for rare diseases. The growth disturbances in the skull and face being variable according to the type of mutation in the FGFr (Crouzon, Pfeiffer, Apert), the strategy is adapted to the phenotype according to the following principles: posterior expansion with or without distraction around 6 months to limit the descent of the cerebellum tonsils and to prevent the turricephalic development; fronto-facial monobloc advancement with internal distraction around the age of 18 months in case of severe exo

The modern imaging opened a possibility of precise exploration of otomandibular dysplasias. The techniques of browsing by IRM and CT Scan and the software of image processing which is associated with these techniques (three-dimensional, superposition and removing of the anatomical structures) allow to carry out a true anatomical dissection of the whole of these malformative syndromes. The study of the skeletal anomalies gains by specifying the disorders of development of the various mandibular segments: temporomandibular joint, ramus and horizontal branch and also, all cranio-maxillar structur
