North American Burkitt's lymphoma presenting with intraoral symptoms.

A case is presented in which posterior tooth mobility and pain, bilateral intraoral swelling of the mandible, and anterior open bite following an incident of facial trauma were the presenting symptoms of a 4-year-old, white American male with Burkitt-type malignant lymphoma. Radiographic examination revealed multiple osteolytic lesions in the body of the mandible, with loss of osseous trabecular architecture, and generalized loss of lamina dura in both maxillary and mandibular arches. The patient also had bone marrow involvement at the time of diagnosis. Following the initial course of chemoth

Superior sagittal sinus laceration complicating an autogenous calvarial bone graft harvest: report of a case.

A case of laceration of the superior sagittal sinus complicating removal of a calvarial graft is reported. Despite the advantages of using autogenous calvarial bone grafts for craniofacial reconstructive surgery, the potential for serious complications related to graft harvest must be appreciated. Surgeons involved in calvarial graft harvest must be familiar with cranial surgical technique, and should be capable of managing intraoperative complications at the donor site.

[Experience with the treatment of blow-out fractures associated with pinching of the oculomotor nerve].

Observations of blow out fractures causing diplopy with m. rectus inf. pinching and their successful treatment are reported on. Importance of early recognizing and of correct diagnosis are emphasized. Because of the nature of injuries of such type and of the situation of traumatologic care the patients get mostly to traumatological, oral surgery departments where the troubles of eye movement are not always recognized since it can be eclipsed by an eyelid oedema or by periorbital haematoma. The surgeon is frequently confronted with an unsolvable task by relayed observation and forming cicatriza

Stainless Steel Versus Titanium Miniplates in the Treatment of Mandibular Fractures: A Comparative Study.

Introduction The fast-paced lifestyle of modern society has led to an increase in maxillofacial trauma, particularly in the mandible, which is prone to fracture due to its prominent position among facial bones. Mandibular fractures are one of the most common facial injuries and require effective treatment to ensure proper healing and function. A study conducted at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Buddha Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital investigated the adaptability, impact on fracture line difficulties, and facial outcomes of fracture therapy using stainless steel a

Are resorbable plating systems comparable to conventional titanium plating in paediatric maxillofacial trauma patients? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of resorbable versus titanium plating systems in the management of paediatric maxillofacial fractures. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and specialty journals up to December 2024 identified six retrospective studies published between 2010 and 2024, involving 1,584 patients aged ≤18 years. Both resorbable and titanium systems provided satisfactory fracture stability and healing. Titanium fixation was consistently associated with higher complication rates, ranging from 8%-12% whereas resorbable systems demonstr

Have There Been any Changes in the Epidemiology and Etiology of Maxillofacial Trauma During the COVID-19 Pandemic? An Italian Multicenter Study.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has had a significant impact on people's behavior. The aim of this study has been to evaluate how the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has impacted the incidence and the features of maxillofacial fractures presented at 6 Italian tertiary centers. Clinical records of all the patients diagnosed for facial fractures between February 23 and May 23, 2019 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Any differences in patient number and characteristics and fracture etiology and site between the 2 groups were then statistically analyzed. There has been a 69.1

Maxillofacial trauma in a pregnant patient: Contemporary management principles with a case report & review of literature.

Trauma during pregnancy deserves special attention because of its management objectives, i.e. well-being of both pregnant woman and foetus. Maxillofacial trauma directly affects the nutrition of foetus by interfering with the normal functions in a pregnant woman such as mouth opening, mastication and breathing. Hence early restitution of form and function of maxillofacial skeleton is essential. However, the gravid status is associated with numerous anatomical and physiological changes which present with clinical dilemma related to imaging and treatment. A careful scrutiny of the patient's syst

Intimate partner violence against women, circumstances of aggressions and oral-maxillofacial traumas: A medical-legal and forensic approach.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health problem that frequently results in oral-maxillofacial traumas, generating high social and economic costs. The aim of this study was to describe the profile of women victims of IPV and determine the pattern of oral-maxillofacial traumas, according to a medical-legal and forensic perspective. An exploratory study of 1361 suspected cases of women victims of IPV was carried out based on database of an Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Dentistry of Northeastern Brazil during a period of 4 years. Interrelationship of Structure and Function in Maxillofacial Fractures.

Surgical fixation of maxillofacial fractures can be associated with a myriad of surgical complications. Specific complications correlate with the type of fracture. The authors present a case of multiple maxillofacial fractures, briefly review various types of fractures, and discuss the operative decision-making process. This case report serves as an important reminder that the operative decision-making process should take into account a patient's entire clinical condition.

Endoscopic approach to maxillofacial trauma.

Endoscopic approaches to maxillofacial trauma have included their use in temporomandibular joint arthroscopy, zygomatic arch repair, repair after orbital trauma, repair of frontal sinus fractures, and finally in the repair of subcondylar mandibular fractures. These techniques provide exciting new options for the management of facial fractures. Many of the techniques provide a steep learning curve and require specialized equipment. The approach to an orbital blowout fracture allows the use of a Caldwell-Luc approach and the use of a naturally occurring body space (the maxillary sinus) for the v

Management of penetrating war injuries: bullet/shell fragments in the sphenoid sinuses.

PURPOSE: Penetrating sphenoid sinus injuries in both war and civilian practice are rare. A review of the literature shows no reports of shell fragments or bullets in this region; hence, the rarity of the cases prompted this report. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A variety of surgical approaches--transethmoidal, transnasal trans-septal, sublabial transnasal, and endoscopic techniques--and the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of these techniques used in the delivery and management of missiles lodged in the sphenoid sinus under conditions of war are described. RESULTS: Four shell fragments and 2 bulle

Hemophilic pseudotumor of the jaws: report of two cases.

Hemophilic pseudotumor of bone is a rare condition that occurs in patients with hemophilia. To date only 10 cases have been reported in the mandible, and none has been reported in the maxilla. The clinical, radiographic, and histologic features and treatment approaches of two cases of hemophilic pseudotumor occurring in the jaws are presented. One of them is probably the first one reported in the maxilla. Both patients had a history of trauma to the area.

[Orofacial injuries in skateboard accidents].

In a clinical study, 25 accidents involving injuries by a fall with a skateboard were investigated and classified in respect of epidemiology, accident mechanism and injury patterns in the facial region. Accident victims are predominantly boys between 7 and 9 years of age. A multiple trauma involving the teeth and the dental system in general and the soft parts of the face is defined as a characteristic orofacial injury pattern in skateboard accidents. The high proportion of damage to the front teeth poses problems of functional and aesthetic rehabilitation necessitating long-term treatment cou

The distal lacrimal ductal system and traumatic epiphora.

While transient epiphora is well documented in the literature, the incidence of permanent epiphora associated with maxillofacial procedures (Le Fort I, II, III, osteotomies, nasal atrostomies and mid-face fractures) is rare. However, little attention has been paid to the distal lacrimal ductal system and its relationship to permanent epiphora. The distal nasolacrimal ductal system was studied in adult dry skulls and cadaver specimens. These findings were correlated by clinical observation. Specific areas of emphasis within this complex include the length, width, and angulation of this system.
