Effective treatment of sarcoptic mange in an alpaca (Vicugna pacos) using fluralaner: a case report.

South American Camelids, including alpacas, have gained popularity in Europe as pets and prized wool sources. Skin health concerns, particularly mite infestations, have emerged as a notable problem in these animals. Sarcoptic mange can lead to severe itching, papules, and chronic symptoms such as alopecia, crusts, and emaciation if left untreated. This case report documents a 2-year-old female alpaca suffering from sarcoptic mange. Despite initial treatment with ivermectin, its condition worsened, leading to severe weight loss, abortion, and a continued presence of mites. Considering the lack …

Study on Ectoparasites of Rhombomys opimus, the Main Reservoir of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Endemic Foci in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Ectoparasites of mammalian hosts play an important role for transmission of diseases from the host reservoirs to human. The aim of this study was to determine the species composition and infestation parameters for parasitic arthropods associated with Rhombomys opimus. METHODS: Ectoparasites of R. opimus were collected from seven endemic district of ZCL in Iran including Shirvan and Sfaraysen in North Khorasan Province, Kalaleh in Golestan Province, Damghan and Shahrood in Semnan Province, and Badrood and Habibabad in Isfahan Province. The areas of study were mainly desert and plai

Modes of ectoparasite reinfestations of deer mice (peromyscus maniculatus).

Modes of ectoparasite reinfestations were studied on ectoparasite-free deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) returned to their natural habitat on the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Siskiyou County, California, during the summer of 1977. The age of the host made no significant difference in the mode of reinfestation of lice, fleas, or mites. Flea reinfestation rates were related to the sex of the host, requiring 4 and 2 days, respectively, to reach control levels on male and female hosts. Mite populations reached the control level within 1 day, regardless of the sex of the host. No statistica

Hepatitis in association with rickettsialpox.

Rickettsialpox is an acute, self-limited, febrile illness caused by Rickettsia akari and transmitted by Liponyssoides sanguineus, a mite that infests the common house mouse, Mus musculus. Liver involvement in rickettsialpox has received little attention, although hepatitis has been reported in several other rickettsial infections. In this report, we describe two patients with rickettsialpox who had acute hepatitis that resolved completely. In the appropriate clinical setting, rickettsialpox should be considered in the differential diagnosis of hepatitis.

Dermestid Dermatitis in a 2-Year-Old Girl: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Dermatitis from contact with carpet, larder, and hide beetles (family Dermestidae) is a seemingly uncommon or underrecognized hypersensitivity reaction to the specialized hairs on the larvae of certain dermestid beetles. The erythematous papulovesicular dermatitis that may result from such contact can be mistakenly construed as evidence of bites of bedbugs or other arthropods or infestation with scabies mites or can be the basis for a diagnosis of delusory parasitosis. We present a case of dermestid dermatitis in a 2-year-old girl and provide a review of the current literature.

Diagnosis of ectoparasitism.

A vacuum cleaner fitted with an in-line filter was used to collect samples from suspected cases of ectoparasitic infestation in animals. Filter samples, including hair, were hydrolyzed in hot potassium hydroxide, and the residue was concentrated by flotation in concentrated sugar and then examined under a microscope. The 206 animals examined yielded fleas, flea feces, forage mites, Cheyletiella, Sarcoptes, Chorioptes, Psoroptes, Otodectes, Demodex and Damalinia spp. The sensitivity of this technique in the diagnosis of ectoparasites was better than that of conventional skin scrapings or direct

Comparison of topical permethrin 5% vs. benzyl benzoate 25% treatment in scabies: a double-blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a pruritic parasitic infestation of the skin. High-income countries have reported an increasing incidence over the last few years. Studies have indicated a reduction in the sensitivity of scabies mites to the standard treatment of choice, topical permethrin 5%. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate in a head-to-head manner the efficacy of two topical scabicides [permethrin 5% and benzyl benzoate 25% (BB)] in the treatment of scabies using the same administration modality; and to address potential confounding factors such as incorrectly performed treatment and hygiene measures. Efficacy and Pharmacokinetics Evaluation of a Single Oral Dose of Afoxolaner against Sarcoptes scabiei in the Porcine Scabies Model for Human Infestation.

Scabies is a major and potentially growing public health problem worldwide with an unmet need for acaricidal agents with greater efficacy and improved pharmacological properties for its treatment. The objective of the present study was to assess the efficacy and describe the pharmacokinetics profile of a novel acaricide, afoxolaner (AFX), in a relevant experimental porcine model. Twelve pigs were experimentally infested and either treated with 2.5 mg/kg single dose oral AFX (n = 4) or 0.2 mg/kg, two doses 8 days apart, oral ivermectin ([IVM] n = 4) or not treated for scabies (n = 4). [Demodex spp in chronic blepharitis patients].

BACKGROUND: Blepharitis is a very common disease in the ophthalmologic practice generally taking a chronic course with intermittent exacerbations. Several studies have linked the presence of Demodex folliculorum with chronic blepharitis, since the mite has the capacity to perpetuate the follicular inflammatory process. The prevalence of infection by Demodex spp. is variable depending on the population. In Paraguay, information on the frequency of the infestation in patients with chronic blepharitis is not available. AIM: To determine the frequency of Demodex spp, and the ocular microbiota in

Problems in diagnosing scabies, a global disease in human and animal populations.

Scabies is a worldwide disease and a major public health problem in many developing countries, related primarily to poverty and overcrowding. In remote Aboriginal communities in northern Australia, prevalences of up to 50% among children have been described, despite the availability of effective chemotherapy. Sarcoptic mange is also an important veterinary disease engendering significant morbidity and mortality in wild, domestic, and farmed animals. Scabies is caused by the ectoparasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei burrowing into the host epidermis. Clinical symptoms include intensely itchy lesions

Review of Scabies in the Elderly.

Scabies, an ectoparasitic infestation of the skin by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, is a clinical problem of particular significance in the elderly population because of unique vulnerability factors. Such factors include reduced mobility, residency in grouped living facilities, and difficulty with implementation of certain treatments. There is also risk of transmission to nearby caretakers and cohabitants. Furthermore, the diagnosis of scabies can be difficult, as this condition can closely resemble other dermatologic diseases. Complicating the diagnosis in this group is the variety of medical se

Hyperkeratotic mange caused by Sarcoptes scabiei (Acariformes: Sarcoptidae) in juvenile human-habituated mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei).

To facilitate ecotourism and behavioral research, free-ranging mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei) have been habituated to humans. During routine health monitoring, five juvenile gorillas were observed with active crusted dermatitis and alopecia. Papular and vesicular lesions and crusts with papular eruption and oozing were numerous and disseminated over the body of one gorilla with a confirmed infestation of scabies. In this gorilla, the hyperkeratotic crusts were loose and thick with a flaky and scaly appearance. Histologically, the epidermis was thickened, displayed hyperkeratosis

Ectoparasite virulence is linked to mode of transmission.

Theory suggests that the evolution of parasite virulence is linked to the dynamics of parasite transmission. All else being equal, parasites transmitted vertically from parents to offspring should be less virulent than parasites capable of horizontal transmission to unrelated hosts. This is because the fitness of vertically transmitted parasites is tightly linked to the reproductive success of the host, whereas the fitness of horizontally transmitted parasites is relatively independent of host reproduction. The virulence-transmission relation has seldom been tested because of difficulties inhe

In vitro demonstration of specific immunological hypersensitivity to scabies mite.

An extract prepared from 200 adult female scabies mites was used for prick and intracutaneous testing in twelve patients with previous scabies infestation, as well as in six healthy controls and three persons with skin sensitivity to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus who had never had scabies before. Seven individuals who had had scabies less than a year prior to the testing had positive intracutaneous (immediate type) reactions, whereas all the five who had had scabies more than a year before had negative reactions. The prick tests were negative in all cases. No skin reactions could be evoked in

Abundance and distribution of Microdispus lambi (Acari: Microdispidae) in Spanish mushroom crops.

The myceliophagous mite Microdispus lambi has become a veritable plague since 1996, when it was first observed in Spanish mushroom crops, and is now causing substantial economic losses, particulary in spring and summer. This study looks at seasonal variation of the pest, its distribution on commercial farms and the population development during the crop cycle of the common white mushroom, Agaricus bisporus. Over a period of 18 months, 24 consecutive mushroom crop cycles were monitored and a total of 24 spawn and 960 substrate samples were analysed. We found that it is usually the substrates in
