Delirium in Trauma Patients: Prevalence and Predictors.

Background and Purpose: Within nursing discourses, the concept of desire among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) is not well understood. Among nurses, this concept is often constructed as being synonymous with sexual and other risk-taking behaviors, which can influence the type of care nurses provide to gbMSM and affect how this group engages with nurses - and their health. This misinterpretation of what desire represents has resulted in gbMSM becoming the target of public health campaigns and nursing interventions aimed at curbing their deviant behaviors. Such an appr

Hospital nurses' occupational exposure to blood: prospective, retrospective, and institutional reports.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined nurses risk of exposure to blood resulting from injuries with needles and sharps, the methods of estimating those risks, and the factors affecting risks. METHODS: Nurses on 40 medical units in 20 hospitals in cities with a high incidence of AIDS were studied. Percutaneous injuries were documented for every shift during a 30-day period. These prospective reports were compared with retrospective and institutional reports. Factors affecting the likelihood of injuries were explored. RESULTS: Based on the prospective reports, the rate of injuries to staff nurses wa

Honey and larvae in the treatment of foot gangrene: a reflection.

With the introduction of the Nursing and Midwifery Council's (NMC) (2015a) revalidation directive, nurses are required to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to providing safe and effective care by continually combining sound empirical evidence with reflective practice ( Sackett et al, 1996 ; Rolfe et al, 2011 ). Using Gibbs' (1998) model, I will reflect on an episode of care undertaken while I was on a recent placement. This reflective account will discuss the clinical use of honey and larvae therapy in the treatment of foot gangrene following meningococcal septicaemia. The psychosocial impact

Temporal Patterns of BPSD During a Multimodal Non-Pharmacological Intervention in Nursing Home and Daycare Centre Settings.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) fluctuate over time, yet multimodal non-pharmacological interventions (MNPIs) are usually evaluated by pre-post comparison alone. We examined BPSD trajectories during an MNPI delivered within routine care in two dementia-specialised settings. METHODS: In this one-group pretest-posttest study, 23 nursing home residents and 14 daycare centre users with physician-confirmed dementia (Global Deterioration Scale [GDS] Stage 4 or higher) received an 8-week MNPI comprising seven care domains. Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnair

Moral distress among physicians and nursing staff in surgical settings: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Moral distress is a relevant occupational health issue in hospital settings, particularly in high-complexity environments such as surgical units, where organizational constraints, ethical dilemmas, and interprofessional dynamics shape professionals' experiences. Comparative evidence is needed to understand how moral distress manifests across professional groups working within the same clinical context. METHODS: This cross-sectional comparative study examined moral distress among physicians and nursing staff working in surgical settings at a public university hospital in southern B

The Experience of Care in People With Palliative Needs and Their Families: A Qualitative Metasynthesis.

AIM: To synthesise and reinterpret qualitative evidence on how people with palliative care needs and their family caregivers experience the care process. BACKGROUND: Palliative care aims to provide holistic, person- and family-centred care. Although qualitative research has explored multiple aspects of end-of-life care, existing knowledge remains fragmented, limiting its translation into coherent, humanised, and clinically applicable nursing care models. DESIGN: A qualitative systematic review with interpretive meta-synthesis. METHODS: A qualitative meta-synthesis was conducted following PR

The RESTORE Framework: An Integrative Theory of Resilience and Sustainable Thriving in Nursing Academia.

AIM: To introduce and theoretically articulate the RESTORE framework, a multi-level model explaining how leadership, organisational conditions, and relational processes interact to support workforce resilience and sustainable thriving in nursing academia. Nursing academia faces growing strain from workforce shortages, escalating role demands and limited clinical education capacity. Current resilience models emphasise individual coping and overlook organisational and relational influences on well-being. System-level approaches that reconceptualise resilience as a pathway to thriving are require

Self-compassion, palliative care self-efficacy, and spiritual care preparedness among nursing students: a cross-sectional study.

Preparing nursing students to deliver holistic palliative care requires both clinical competence and readiness to address patients' spiritual needs. Spiritual care preparedness may be associated with psychological resources and educational experiences; however, these relationships remain insufficiently understood, particularly in culturally specific contexts such as Saudi Arabia. To examine the associations among self-compassion, palliative care self-efficacy, and spiritual care preparedness among nursing students, and to explore whether palliative care self-efficacy demonstrates a cross-secti

Resveratrol mitigates diabetes-induced cardiac dysfunction via SIRT1/PPAR-α/PGC-1 pathway.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) significantly contributes to cardiovascular complications in diabetes. This study investigated the protective effects of Resveratrol (RES) in combination with evidence-based nursing on DCM and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Eighty elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and DCM were randomly assigned to a control group or an RES group. The RES group received RES (800 mg/day) along with evidence-based nursing, while the control group received a placebo with nursing care for six months. Clinical indicators, including glucose and lipid metabolism,

Patterns, advances, and gaps in using ChatGPT and similar technologies in nursing education: A PAGER scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Generative AI (GenAI) can transform nursing education and modernise content delivery. However, the rapid integration of these tools has raised concerns about academic integrity and teaching quality. Previous reviews have either looked broadly at artificial intelligence or focused narrowly on single tools like ChatGPT. This scoping review uses a structured framework to identify patterns, advances, gaps, evidence, and recommendations for implementing GenAI in nursing education. METHODS: This scoping review followed the JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We searched P

Interpreting free-text cardiac catheterisation reports: A machine learning approach informed by focused ethnography.

AIM: To examine how focused ethnographic insights can inform the development of a machine learning pipeline to improve the extraction of clinically relevant information from percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) documentation and support nursing education and practice. BACKGROUND: Cardiac catheterisation procedures produce detailed documentation, often embedded in free-text fields in electronic health records. For nurses delivering post-procedural care, extracting this information is time-consuming and prone to error. While machine learning (ML) offers automation potential, many models str

Associations of Compassion Competence, Nursing Work Environment, Organizational Communication Satisfaction, and Missed Nursing Care on Patient Safety Among Nurses in Comprehensive Nursing Care Service Wards: A Path Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify the factors associated with patient safety for nurses working in comprehensive nursing care service wards, based on the Structure-Process-Outcome model. As comprehensive nursing care service wards expanded in South Korea, the number of older and more severely ill inpatients increased, raising the demand for nursing care. In these wards, nurses play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety. Therefore, a thorough identification of the factors associated with patient safety, based on theoretical frameworks, is necessary. METHODS: A cross-sectio
