Peripheral neuropathy is common in human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) infection. Peripheral neuropathies complicate all stages of the HIV-1 disease and cause considerable morbidity and disability in HIV-1 infected individuals and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. Whereas symptomatic neuropathies occur in approximately 10% to 15% of HIV-1-infected patients overall, pathologic evidence of peripheral nerve involvement is present in virtually all end-stage AIDS patients. There are 6 major clinical types of HIV-associated neuropathies that are regularly seen in large HIV-

Not only plantar pressure but also weight-bearing activity affects accumulated mechanical stress to the foot and may be related to foot ulceration. To date, activity has not been accounted for in leprosy. The purpose was to compare barefoot pressure, in-shoe pressure and daily cumulative stress between persons affected by leprosy with and without previous or current foot ulceration. Nine persons with current plantar ulceration were compared to 15 with previous and 15 without previous ulceration. Barefoot peak pressure (EMED-X), in-shoe peak pressure (Pedar-X) and daily cumulative stress (in-sh

We reviewed 77 patients with an acetabular fracture, treated operatively through a non-extensile approach after an average time of 45 months. The ilioinguinal approach was chosen in 41, the Kocher-Langenbeck approach in 36 patients. Following the Letournel classification, the most frequent lesions were posterior wall (26%), two-column (22.1%) and anterior column (14.3%) fractures. Subchondral impaction, intra-articular fracture fragments and fracture comminution, called modifiers, could be identified in the preoperative CT-data of 38 patients (49.4%). Patients were operated after an average of

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a well-known chronic focal mononeuropathy caused by the mechanical distortion of the nerve at the carpal tunnel. It affects approximately 5% of the population worldwide and 12.1% in Africa. However, it has severe pain that causes discomfort and disturbs daily activities, the magnitude and its risk factors are poorly understood in Ethiopia.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of carpal tunnel syndrome among patients with musculoskeletal complaints in Dire Dawa, Eastern Ethiopia.
METHODOLOGY: An institution-ba

BACKGROUND: There is a strong need for the development of core outcome sets (COS) across nerve surgery to allow for improved data synthesis, meta-analyses, and reporting consistency. Development of a core outcome set typically starts with assessing the literature for previously reported outcome measures. Common peroneal neuropathy (CPN) is the most common compressive mononeuropathy of the lower extremity and can result in pain, motor, and sensory deficits. A COS for COmmon PEroneal neuropathy (COS-COPE) is needed to improve future study design and comparison and synthesis of data. The goal of

Analgesic efficacy of methadone in cancer and chronic non-cancer pains is greater than that of other opioids, probably because of its unique pharmacokinetics properties and also because it targets glutamatergic receptors in addition to µ-opioid receptors. However, methadone has drawbacks which are clearly related to dosing and treatment duration. The authors hypothesized that the antinociceptive efficacy of methadone could be synergistically potentiated by magnesium and copper salts in a preclinical mouse model of chronic pain, using the intraplantar formalin test as algesimetric tool. The spa

BACKGROUND: Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is a mononeuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) characterized by pain, numbness or paresthesia on the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. Though several contributing factors have been identified, the cause of its idiopathic form still remains unclear. Anatomic and clinical studies have demonstrated a variable course for the LFCN and have suggested a contribution to the pathogenesis of MP.
OBJECTIVE: It was the aim of the present case-control study to assess the anatomical course and compression site of the LFCN using high resolution ultr

Peripheral neuropathy is the most frequent neurological complication associated with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) infection and advanced acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). There are at least 6 patterns of HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy, although these diagnoses are often overlooked or misdiagnosed. Distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSP) is the most common form of peripheral neuropathy in HIV infection. DSP occurs mainly in patients with advanced immunosuppression and may also be secondary to the neurotoxicity of several antiretroviral agents. Treatment of painful DS

Multiple myeloma can rarely mimic seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We report a 55-year-old woman who presented with longstanding deforming polyarthritis with extensive subcutaneous nodules, tenosynovitis, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide positivity and mononeuritis multiplex. Even though the clinical picture was consistent with seropositive RA, the absence of bone erosion or joint space narrowing on hand and knee radiographs led us to question the diagnosis of RA. Further investigation revealed a diagnosis of multiple myeloma with cutaneous amyloid deposits, based on serum immunofixati
