Anisakiasis is a fish-borne parasitic disease caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked fish, as well as cephalopods, contaminated by third instar larvae (L3) of species belonging to the genus Anisakis (Anisakidae). Origanum compactum is a small herbaceous aromatic plant endemic to Spain and Morocco. In Morocco, the plant is used under infusion to treat heart diseases and intestinal pains or as preservative for foodstuffs. This is the first time that the O. compactum essential oil is tested against the parasitic nematode Anisakis simplex. The phytochemical analysis by GC-MS revealed carv…

The clinical results of scorpion stings by Androctonus mauritanicus (Am) and Buthus occitanus (Bo) (main sources of scorpionism in Morocco) were evaluated in this work. The objective was to compare the clinical manifestations of envenoming from these species by investigating possible correlations among symptoms/signs and laboratory abnormalities of envenomed patients. 41 children (25 males, 18 months - 11 years) were admitted at the Provincial Hospital of El Jadida-Morocco. Their minor (18 children) or severe (23 children) systemic signs such as pallor (48.8%), pulmonary edema (APE) (36.6%), c…

UNLABELLED: The proteome of the venom of Naja haje legionis, the only medically important elapid species in Morocco, has been elucidated by using a combination of proteomic techniques that includes size exclusion chromatography, reverse-phase HPLC, Tricine/SDS-Page, tryptic digestion, Q-TOF tandem mass spectrometry and database search. The sequence analysis of venom fractions revealed a highly complex venom proteome which counts a total of 76 proteins identified from database that can be assigned into 9 proteins families. We report the identification of: cobra venom factor (CVF), l-amino-acid …

Ollier disease is an uncommon disease characterized by several enchondromas and an asymmetric distribution of cartilage lesions, which can vary significantly in size, location, age, and gender. The primary symptom of this condition is a nonossifying chondrocyte mass or hamartomatous chondrocyte growth in the metaphysis of a short or long bone. Specific cases can progress to chondrosarcoma or osteosarcoma. X-ray is the most fundamental diagnostic technique for skeletal illnesses. In this article, we present a case of Ollier disease from Mother and Child Hospital IBN SINA, Rabat, Morocco.

Shewanella putrefaciens is a Gram-negative, non-fermenting, motile and oxidase-positive bacillus. Its incrimination in human pathology is very rare, although there has been a resurgence in Shewanella infections in recent years. We report the first case in Morocco of a purulent otorrhoea caused by S. putrefaciens , resistant to conventional treatment, occurring in a 25-year-old female, afebrile, without deterioration of the general state and possibly acquired during sea bathing. We also describe the bacteriological characteristics of and antibiotic susceptibility results for the isolate.

The abortion for medical reasons is the only abortion allowed in Morocco and it aims to preserve maternal health or to forewarn the birth of handicaped children. The author has ascribed 22 cases of medical abortion, their indications have maternal origin in 91% cases. In europeans series the indication have 80% of foetal origin. In order to change the profil of our indications, the author insists on the necessity to program the pregnancy in maternal pathology, to eliminate an early, pregnancy before any therapeutical act and to encourage antenatal diagnosis according to legal dispositions.

Females of a laboratory colony of Phlebotomus papatasi from Kabul were fed through a membrane on a high dose of amastigotes of Leishmania tropica from the same place. Less than one-third of the flies became infected and only 6% developed heavy infections of the stomodaeal valve. From these observations, and previous studies by other workers, it is concluded that P. papatasi probably plays little or no part in the transmission of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Kabul. As in Saudi Arabia and Morocco, the most likely vector in Afghanistan is P. sergenti.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatidosis is an anthropozoonosis due to the development in humans of the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus and is endemic in many countries of the Mediterranean region such as Morocco.
CASES PRESENTATION: We report three cases of hydatid cyst at unusual locations such as the peritoneum, and the retroperitoneum.
DISCUSSION: Hydatid disease usually involves the liver (75 %), the lungs (15.4 %), and the spleen (5.1 %). Almost any anatomic location can be the host site of the parasitic cysts.
CONCLUSION: Multiple locations of hydatid cyst often pose a problem of differentia…

Hydatidosis is a zoonosis due to the development of the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus in humans. This disease is very frequent in many countries of North Africa such as Morocco. The most frequent locations of hydatid cysts are the liver (75%) and the lungs (15.4%). Splenic hydatid cyst occurs in only 5.1% of cases. The diagnosis remains challenging and is made upon a hundle of clinical, radiological, biological, and histological arguments. In this paper, we report a case of spleen-preserving surgery for a splenic hydatid cyst to suggest the best management of these hydatid cysts and a…

The hydatid disease is common and remains endemic in Morocco. The treatment relies mainly on surgery. This may be accompanied by rare but serious complications that can certainly be life-threatening. Allergic reactions can manifest as anaphylactic shock which is characterized by its brutal onset and its severity. We stress through the pediatric case reported the exceptional occurrence of anaphylactic shock during surgery and the need for its early recognition in order to establish effective treatment. Prevention relies mainly on surgical precautions taken to avoid seeding of the abdominal cavi…

A young male Austrian tourist, aged 23 years and unvaccinated against rabies, was bitten by a dog in Morocco in July 2004. One month later he was hospitalised in Ceuta with symptoms compatible with rabies. He died on 23 September in an Austrian hospital after a diagnosis of rabies was confirmed by FAT, IHC and RT-PCR (including sequencing) of the neck skin and the RT-PCR (including sequencing) of the pharyngeal swab. This Austrian case of laboratory confirmed rabies highlights the urgent need for reinforcement of the international recommendations for travel vaccinations.

Snakebite poisonings are frequent In Morocco, because of the delay in treatment, they can be very serious even lethal. Treatment has two components: firstly correction of the systemic hemodynamic, respiratory and haematological disturbances and secondly administration of specific antivenom. Envenomation of a limb can lead to cutaneous necrosis, compartment syndrome and even necrotising fascitis. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is needed to prevent these complications. We report two cases of compartment syndrome of which one was combined with systemic manifestations and the other caused re…

A 27-year old female patient, born and living in Morocco, suffered from severe variceal bleeding and weight loss. Eventually a diagnosis of gastric fundus varices was made supposedly resulting from partial obstruction of the splenic vein and collateral blood flow via the short gastric veins. Splenectomy was proposed. Peroperatively it became apparent that a solitary ecchinococcal cyst in the hilus of the spleen obstructed the blood flow in the splenic vein. The cyst, the spleen, and part of the pancreatic tail were removed. After splenectomy bleeding did not recur.
