Polygenic scores for genomic surveillance of insecticide resistance in malaria control.

Recent increases in the global malaria disease burden are thought to be due, in part, to an increase in insecticide resistance, which reduces the efficacy of primary control methods, such as long-lasting insecticide nets and indoor residual spraying. However, quantifying the impact of insecticide resistance on vector control tools before intervention failure is hampered by the insensitivity of phenotyping approaches. In this opinion article, we discuss how genomic approaches can be used to accurately characterise patterns of insecticide resistance and may be used to provide an estimate of the

Introducing researchers involved in vector control to modelling for operational decision-making in Benin: report of the workshop, January 17-18, 2024.

Malaria continues to pose a major threat despite numerous efforts aimed at reducing its incidence and ultimately eliminating the disease. The majority of malaria cases occur in Africa. According to the World Health Organization, one of the key reasons for the continued presence of malaria is financial constraints. It is, therefore, crucial to make the most efficient use of the limited resources available. Data generated from control efforts must be thoroughly analysed to inform effective decision-making. In this context, predictive approaches can play a vital role. Predictive modelling, in par

SEASONAL MOSQUITO PRODUCTION IN STORM SEWER CATCH BASINS OF THE NORTH SHORE SUBURBS OF CHICAGO, 2021 TO 2024.

From 2021 to 2024, the number of pupae found in storm sewer catch basins in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago were assessed as part of routine quality control and improvement efforts. Over the course of these 4 yr, pupae were collected at least once during all calendar months, allowing for some insight into monthly mosquito production in catch basins. Thus, the intent of this study was to use those data to describe the number of pupae found in these structures across calendar months. In total, 1,993 unique catch basins were sampled. Pupae were found during the months of April through December

Blinded by the light: does heat or light enhance wild mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) attraction to CO2-baited traps in the Great Salt Lake area?

The New Jersey Light Trap has been among the earliest trap models used for mosquito surveillance in the United States. This trap was modernized in the 1950s to the miniature CDC light trap, with the addition of CO2 following soon after. The incandescent light has the tendency to attract nontarget insects, as well as losing a substantial portion of their energy as heat. Few studies have delineated whether heat or light in isolation make a difference in field collections using the former traps within the United States. Our study focused on isolating heat and light variables by using incandescent

Dengue virus and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics face concerns over dengue virus transmission, despite Paris's lower mosquito activity. Preventive measures include eliminating breeding sites, insecticide spraying, and public awareness. Health systems will monitor and respond to cases. Large gatherings like the Olympics can amplify disease spread, as seen with Zika in Rio 2016. Recent reports confirm dengue presence in Europe, highlighting global risks. While Paris's overall dengue risk is low, even a few cases could impact global health. Collaboration among health authorities, researchers, and event or

The Immediate Effects of a Combined Mass Drug Administration and Indoor Residual Spraying Campaign to Accelerate Progress Toward Malaria Elimination in Grande-Anse, Haiti.

BACKGROUND: Haiti is planning targeted interventions to accelerate progress toward malaria elimination. In the most affected department (Grande-Anse), a combined mass drug administration (MDA) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) campaign was launched in October 2018. This study assessed the intervention's effectiveness in reducing Plasmodium falciparum prevalence. METHODS: An ecological quasi-experimental study was designed, using a pretest and posttest with a nonrandomized control group. Surveys were conducted in November 2017 in a panel of easy access groups (25 schools and 16 clinics) and w

New insights on malaria.

Malaria is long known as a deadly vector borne infection, caused by five parasite species of the coccidian genus Plasmodia that are present in as many as 85 countries. Despite significant progresses have been achieved to control the infection by early diagnosis and artemisinin combination treatment, insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying, malaria still represents a major public health issue in many endemic low-income countries. New diagnostic tools of higher sensitivity and specificity are now available for use in endemic countries to better guide diagnosis and treatment. In par

The Possibility of Using Isolated Alkaloid Compounds and Crude Extracts of Piper retrofractum (Piperaceae) as Larvicidal Control Agents for Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae.

Culex quinquefasciatus is a common domestic mosquito that is widespread in many areas of Thailand and serves as a southeastern vector of Japanese encephalitis. The present study investigated the acute toxicity of crude extracts and alkaloid compounds of Piper retrofractum (Piperales: Piperaceae) in Cx. quinquefasciatus third instar larvae. P. retrofractum was sequentially extracted using hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol, and the crude extracts were tested on mosquito larvae. Detoxification and neuroenzymes were analyzed to establish the mode of action. Acute toxicity was as

Biological and Chemical Characterization of a New Larvicide Ovitrap Made of Plastic With Pyriproxyfen Incorporated for Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Control.

Aedes aegypti (L.) is a species of international concern because of its ability to transmit serious human arboviral diseases including yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya, which have spread to all continents. Ovitraps are containers constructed to imitate Aedes' natural breeding sites and have been used for many decades as a sensitive and inexpensive surveillance tool for detecting the presence of container-inhabiting mosquitoes. In addition to their value for vector surveillance, various ovitrap devices have been evaluated as tools for suppressing Ae. aegypti populations. In this study, we

Laboratory tests on the efficacy of VBC60035, a combined larvicidal formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (strain AM65-52) and Bacillus sphaericus (strain 2362) against Aedes albopictus in simulated catch basins.

Catch basins are a common breeding site for mosquito larvae in urban areas. The arrival in Spain of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, has turned catch basins into a challenging public health issue in some areas such as the Baix Llobregat region, where more than 135,000 units are treated per year in a large-scale application program. Although biorational larvicides are used, modern formulations providing longer efficacy periods could lead to manpower savings. Laboratory indoor trials are presented on the formulation VBC60035 (Vectomax FG), which is under registration in Spain. Indoor

Impact of pre-seasonal focal treatment on population densities of the mosquito Aedes aegypti in Trinidad, West Indies: a preliminary study.

A new pre-seasonal focal treatment strategy against Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes is described for the first time. It was evaluated for 25 weeks using ovitraps, and larval and pupal surveys in the townships of Curepe (treated) and St. Joseph (untreated), Trinidad, West Indies. Both townships were similar with respect to number of houses, size of human populations, the number of Ae. aegypti infested houses and containers. In March 2003, a total of 9403 containers were inspected, of which 1.4% in Curepe (63/4499) and 1.3% in St. Joseph (64/4904) were positive for Ae. aegypti i

Characteristics of malaria vector breeding habitats in Sri Lanka: relevance for environmental management.

In and around a village in the Anuradhapura District of Sri Lanka anopheline larvae were sampled from July 1994 to April 1996 in all surface water bodies. Samples positive for Anopheles culicifacies, the established vector of malaria in Sri Lanka, and for An. barbirostris, An. vagus, and An. varuna, potential secondary vectors, were characterized by site, exposure to sunlight, substratum, turbidity of the water, presence of vegetation, and presence of fauna. Availability of pools of stagnant water in the stream near the village and along the edge of the village tank was highly predictive for p

Intradomiciliary behavior of Anopheles albimanus on the coastal plain of southern Mexico: implications for malaria control.

The postfeeding indoor resting behavior of Anopheles albimanus in experimental houses in southern México was investigated by using a mark-recapture procedure. The majority of mosquitoes rested inside houses after taking a blood meal indoors. There was a higher landing frequency on interior surfaces other than walls and roofs; however, mosquitoes rested for longer periods on these 2 surfaces. Successive landings on walls after short flights showed that mosquitoes gradually increased their mean landing height from 1.0 to 1.4 m. Similarly, mosquitoes resting at the base of inner roofs had a succe

Road salt pollution alters sex ratios in emerging mosquito populations.

De-icing road salt is a persistent emerging pollutant in temperate freshwater systems, where winter salting is necessary for road and pedestrian safety. Experts argue that road salts may increase salt-tolerant mosquito populations and, potentially, disease transmission in urban areas. Only adult females consume bloodmeals and may carry zoonotic diseases. While there are some species with naturally occurring male-biased sex ratios, it is unclear whether road salt differentially affects male and female mosquitoes to alter sex ratios. We hypothesized that road salts would masculinize emergence se
