Fundamental theory of current-induced motion of magnetic skyrmions.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that appear in magnets with broken spatial inversion symmetry as a consequence of competition between the (anti)ferromagnetic exchange interactions and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a magnetic field. In the research of spintronics, the current-driven dynamics of skyrmions has been extensively studied aiming at their applications to next-generation spintronic devices. However, current-induced skyrmion motion exhibits diverse behaviors depending on various factors and conditions such as the type of skyrmion, driving mechanism, system g…

Neural sensitivity to translational self- and object-motion velocities.

The ability to detect and assess world-relative object-motion is a critical computation performed by the visual system. This computation, however, is greatly complicated by the observer's movements, which generate a global pattern of motion on the observer's retina. How the visual system implements this computation is poorly understood. Since we are potentially able to detect a moving object if its motion differs in velocity (or direction) from the expected optic flow generated by our own motion, here we manipulated the relative motion velocity between the observer and the object within a stat…

Characterizing the structure of mouse behavior using Motion Sequencing.

Spontaneous mouse behavior is composed from repeatedly used modules of movement (e.g., rearing, running or grooming) that are flexibly placed into sequences whose content evolves over time. By identifying behavioral modules and the order in which they are expressed, researchers can gain insight into the effect of drugs, genes, context, sensory stimuli and neural activity on natural behavior. Here we present a protocol for performing Motion Sequencing (MoSeq), an ethologically inspired method that uses three-dimensional machine vision and unsupervised machine learning to decompose spontaneous m…

Running and Tumbling Localized Structures: A Non-Brownian Motion.

Macroscopic systems present particle-type solutions. Spontaneous symmetry-breaking can cause these solutions to travel in different directions, and the inclusion of random fluctuations can induce them to run and tumble. We investigate the running and tumbling of localized structures observed on a prototype model of one-dimensional pattern formation with noise. Statistically, the dynamics of localized structures are examined, particularly the mean square displacement as a function of time. It initially shows a diffusive behavior, replaced by a ballistic one, and finally manifests itself as diff

Novel neurodigital interface reduces motion sickness in virtual reality.

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-created 3D environment with a focus on realistic scenes and pictures created for entertainment, medical and/or educational and training purposes. One of the major side effects of VR immersion reported in the scientific literature, media and social media is Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS), with clinical symptoms such as disorientation, nausea, and oculomotor discomfort. VIMS is mostly caused by the discrepancy between the visual and vestibular systems and can lead to dizziness, nausea, and disorientation. In this study, we present one potential novel s…

Relationship Between Motion Sickness Susceptibility and Vestibular Test Results.

OBJECTIVE: There is no test parameter with high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of motion sickness. The aim of this study was to demonstrate a correlation between vestibular function tests and motion sickness. In addition, our secondary aim is to evaluate the sensitivity of the skull vibration-induced nystagmus test (SVINT) in the diagnosis of motion sickness. METHODS: A total of 44 young adults aged 19-25 who had no hearing loss, complaints of dizziness/vertigo, or any diagnosed neurological disease were included. According to the motion sickness susceptibility questionnaire-sh…

Wearable motion-based platform for functional spine health assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain is a significant burden to society and the lack of reliable outcome measures, combined with a prevailing inability to quantify the biopsychosocial elements implicated in the disease, impedes clinical decision-making and distorts treatment efficacy. This paper aims to validate the utility of a biopsychosocial spine platform to provide standardized wearable sensor-derived functional motion assessments to assess spine function and differentiate between healthy controls and patients. Secondarily, we explored the correlation between these motion features and subjective b…

Robot-Aided Motion Analysis in Neurorehabilitation: Benefits and Challenges.

In the neurorehabilitation field, robot-aided motion analysis (R-AMA) could be helpful for two main reasons: (1) it allows the registration and monitoring of patients' motion parameters in a more accurate way than clinical scales (clinical purpose), and (2) the multitude of data produced using R-AMA can be used to build machine learning algorithms, detecting prognostic and predictive factors for better motor outcomes (research purpose). Despite their potential in clinical settings, robotic assessment tools have not gained widespread clinical acceptance. Some barriers remain to their clinical a…

Vestibular mapping of the naturalistic head-centered motion spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Naturalistic head accelerations can be used to elicit vestibular evoked potentials (VestEPs). These potentials allow for analysis of cortical vestibular processing and its multi-sensory integration with a high temporal resolution. METHODS: We report the results of two experiments in which we compared the differential VestEPs elicited by randomized translations, rotations, and tilts in healthy subjects on a motion platform. RESULTS: An event-related potential (ERP) analysis revealed that established VestEPs were verifiable in all three acceleration domains (translations, rotations…

Vision-Based Structural Modal Identification Using Hybrid Motion Magnification.

As a promising alternative to conventional contact sensors, vision-based technologies for a structural dynamic response measurement and health monitoring have attracted much attention from the research community. Among these technologies, Eulerian video magnification has a unique capability of analyzing modal responses and visualizing modal shapes. To reduce the noise interference and improve the quality and stability of the modal shape visualization, this study proposes a hybrid motion magnification framework that combines linear and phase-based motion processing. Based on the assumption that…

Relating individual motion sickness levels to subjective discomfort ratings.

High levels of vehicle automation are expected to increase the risk of motion sickness, which is a major detriment to driving comfort. The exact relation between motion sickness and discomfort is a matter of debate, with recent studies suggesting a relief of discomfort at the onset of nausea. In this study, we investigate whether discomfort increases monotonously with motion sickness and how the relation can best be characterized in a semantic experiment (Experiment 1) and a motion sickness experiment (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, 15 participants performed pairwise comparisons on the subjec…

Enhancing visual motion discrimination by desynchronizing bifocal oscillatory activity.

Visual motion discrimination involves reciprocal interactions in the alpha band between the primary visual cortex (V1) and mediotemporal areas (V5/MT). We investigated whether modulating alpha phase synchronization using individualized multisite transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) over V5 and V1 regions would improve motion discrimination. We tested 3 groups of healthy subjects with the following conditions: (1) individualized In-Phase V1alpha-V5alpha tACS (0° lag), (2) individualized Anti-Phase V1alpha-V5alpha tACS (180° lag) and (3) sham tACS. Motion discrimination and EEG ac…

Multiparameter single-particle motion analysis for homogeneous digital immunoassay.

Digital homogeneous non-enzymatic immunosorbent assay (digital Ho-Non ELISA) is a new class of digital immunoassay that enables highly sensitive quantification of biomolecules using a simple protocol. In digital Ho-Non ELISA, nanoparticles are tethered onto the surface of femtoliter reactors via captured target molecules. The tethered particles capturing target molecules are identified as those showing a confined Brownian motion with root-mean-square displacement (RMSD) values in a defined range. The present work aims to improve the specificity to discriminate tethered particles via single-tar…

Unsupervised Online Video Object Segmentation With Motion Property Understanding.

Unsupervised video object segmentation aims to automatically segment moving objects over an unconstrained video without any user annotation. So far, only few unsupervised online methods have been reported in the literature, and their performance is still far from satisfactory because the complementary information from future frames cannot be processed under online setting. To solve this challenging problem, in this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised online video object segmentation (UOVOS) framework by construing the motion property to mean moving in concurrence with a generic object for s…
