The resistance of pathogenic fungi and failure of drug therapy increased dramatically. Numerous studies have reported the individual or syne … e may contribute to a better understanding of flavonoids as multi-target agents in the treatment of mycoses and provide some ideas on the development of novel flavonoids-based antifungals.

Trichophyton rubrum is an important causative agent of superficial mycoses worldwide. To uncover a genetic composition of a local population of this fungus, we sequenced A7C99_6411 and A7C99_6714 loci, coding for hypothetical proteins and revealed two complex genotypes, differing by a single missense mutation in each locus. One of the two A7C99_6411/6714 genotypes was not found in tinea pedis cases and demonstrated mostly longer TRS-1 elements when compared to another genotype. Thus, we present a description of nucleotide polymorphism in protein-coding loci in T. rubrum and provide evidence fo…

Mucormycosis is an uncommon systemic mycosis affecting the immunocompromised individuals. It is usually caused by organisms of the genera Rhizopus and Mucor, although rarely other organisms have also been implicated. Mycoses due to these angioinvasive fungi have an acute onset, rapidly progressive course with high mortality rate. A rare and less well known is the chronic subtype of primary cutaneous mucormycosis (PCM). Herein, we report a case of PCM clinically presenting as a chronic, giant destructive plaque in a young immunocompetent male and coin the term chronic granulomatous mucormycosis…

The differential diagnosis of yeasts or yeast-like organisms includes a series of imported and domestic fungal pathogens. The spectrum of fungal pathogens involves dimorphic fungi which may cause deep mycoses in healthy people as well as opportunistic fungi, which require predisposing factors for infection, e.g. immunosuppression or a trauma. The histology is sometimes unambiguous; however, frequently there is a great similarity between diverse fungal infections in tissues and the diagnostically decisive criteria are only obvious in a few pathogens. In addition to a classical culture technique…

Onychomycosis is a curable infection disease. It is widespread, but not easy to treat. Because fungal pathogens never induce immunity, the relapse rate of mycoses is generally high. The main causes are residual fungal spores in the nail and the individual susceptibility of the patient, which can hardly be influenced. Crucial for long-term therapeutic success is a sporicidal topical therapy. In severe cases ones also needs long-term, well-tolerated systemic therapy, based on accurate microbiological diagnosis of the causative agent. Presented is a three-step therapeutic approach that is easy to…

Paracoccidioidomycosis is an endemic systemic mycosis that predominates in southern Mexico, parts of Central America, and South America. It is caused by a dimorphic fungus and is generally acquired through the lungs, from where it disseminates. Paracoccidioidomycosis has different clinical manifestations that require differentiation with tuberculosis, Hodgkin disease, several systemic and subcutaneous mycoses, and squamous cell carcinoma. Diagnosis is made by finding the organism in a biopsy specimen and isolating it in fungal culture. Treatment includes sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim for mild …

BACKGROUND: Neonatal limb reduction defects may be caused by exposure to an external agent. The azole derivatives are used in the treatment of systemic and dermal mycoses. Their relative teratogenic risk is still controversial.
CASES: We describe two newborns with severe limb defects who were exposed to high doses of oral (an unacceptable route) and/or intravaginal bifonazole during the entire first trimester of pregnancy.
CONCLUSION: Although only two cases are insufficient to establish a relationship, our data suggest that maternal intake of bifonazole in early pregnancy poses a risk of mo…

Pulmonary mucormycosis occur in immunosuppressed patients with a neutropenic treatment or a malignant neoplasia. Although the histological study alone cannot enable species identification, the pathologist usually makes the diagnosis of mucormycosis and can eliminate other filamentous mycoses such as aspergillosis or scedosporiosis. Pulmonary infection caused by Cunninghamella bertholletiae is a very rare lung mucormycosis, particularly in young patients. The histological features of this filamentous mycosis are unusual making the diagnosis of mucormycosis difficult. Mycological study is then c…

Nail changes occur frequently in adults, but are relatively rare in children. There are, however, certain nail changes that emerge particularly during childhood. Ingrown nails, onychoschizia, congenital slanted alignment of the large toenail, and psoriasiform nail dystrophies can be frequently observed in toddlers and in schoolchildren the syndrome of an ingrown nail, nail artifacts, periungual warts or fibromas, trachyonychia, and nail mycoses. Connatal nail changes can appear as isolated events or together with other symptoms whereas acquired nail changes are caused by infections, traumatic …

Despite potential benefits, few objective clinical data (with the exception of cryptococcocal meningitis) are available supporting the routine use of combination antifungal regimens in patients with invasive mycoses, importantly aspergillosis or candidiasis. There is considerable debate on what constitutes synergy or antagonism in vitro and whether these laboratory findings are translated to beneficial interactions in patients. Given the lack of rigorous clinical data, a better understanding of the important concepts for the justification of the clinical and pharmacoeconomic threshold of antif…

The advent of effective antibacterial and antiviral prophylatic and therapeutic strategies has led to the emergence of opportunistic mycoses as a principal cause of infection-related mortality in organ transplant recipients. Candida and Aspergillus species have accounted for most invasive fungal infections in organ transplant recipients. Epidemiologic trends within the last decade, however, are notable for the emergence of mycelial fungi other than Aspergillus as increasingly important pathogens in these patients. This article reviews the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, pathogenetic bas…

The paper presents methods of Fuzzy Set Theory which can be a helpful key to medical diagnosis on the basis of symptoms as well as to the differentiating the effectiveness of action of drugs (metronidazole, tinidazole and ornidazole) in trichomoniasis. The relationship between patients and symptoms, symptoms and diagnoses or patients and diagnoses is considered as a fuzzy relation. A max-min composite fuzzy relation is a mathematical apparatus for finding the diagnoses such as: trichomoniasis, mycoses or bacterial infection. The solution of the other problem is based determining an eigen fuzzy…

Patients with mechanical circulatory support (MCS) devices and those who undergo heart transplants are at risk for invasive fungal infections (IFI). Though Candida and Aspergillus spp. account for most infections, the evolving epidemiology of resistant-Candida spp. such as Candida auris, endemic mycoses, and other molds impacted by climate change, threaten MCS and transplant patients. Fungal diagnostics are overall limited, and current, widely used antifungal agents are suboptimal with significant toxicities. However, innovative diagnostic strategies coupled with novel antifungal agents for pr…

Mycoses refer to infectious diseases caused by fungi. Fungal infections are rare and mainly occur as opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. Candida species are the most common cause of mycosis; however, members of the order Mucorales or genus Aspergillus may also cause serious fungal infections in immunocompromised hosts. Fungal infections of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract can be asymptomatic or may present with abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or GI bleeding. Although rare, thorough understanding of fungal infections of the upper GI tract encountered in real-world clinica…

Small animal mycoses vary geographically. Different clinical presentations are seen in animals with infection of the central nervous system (CNS), including multifocal meningoencephalomyelitis, intracranial lesions that accompany sinonasal lesions, rapidly progressive ventriculitis, or solitary granuloma of the brain or spinal cord. Systemic, nasal, or extraneural clinical signs are common but, especially in granuloma cases, do not always occur. Surgery may have a diagnostic and therapeutic role in CNS granuloma. There have been recent advancements in serology. Fluconazole, voriconazole, and p…

Chromoblastomycosis belongs to the heterogeneous group of subcutaneous mycoses. It is caused by various pigmented (dematiaceous) fungi, which gain entry into the skin via traumatic implantation. We would like to share a case report of chromoblastomycosis in a 32-year-old male, who presented to us with 3 years history of slowly progressive, itchy, verrucous, crusted lesions over right forearm and arm. He is being treated with itraconazole 100 mg twice daily. The case is of interest because it has so far not been reported from our region- the northwest arid zone of India. The patient showed favo…

There are few populational studies to estimate the dimension of dermatological diseases. We performed a survey with 515 employees from UNESP campus, Botucatu (SP), exploring demographic data, medical appointments and dermatological diagnoses. Additionally, we induced questions about prevalent diseases. Appointments to the dermatologist were reported by 77% of subjects. The main dermatoses spontaneously reported were mycoses, allergies, nevi and viral warts. There were association of juvenile acne and males (OR=2.3), melasma and females (OR=8.0), and onychomycosis with older age (OR=1.05). Surv…

This manuscript reports on two very low birth weight premature infants with respiratory distress, receiving parenteral nutrition and broad-spectrum antibiotics for about 3 weeks, who developed Candida albicans sepsis associated with fungal mycoses and endocarditis, despite treatment with Amphotericin B and Caspofungin. On days 40 and 47, respectively, antifungal therapy was modified to liposomal Amphotericin B combined with Fluconazole 6 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks, resulting in complete resolution of the mycetomas. Our observations suggest that the combination of liposomal Amphotericin B with Fluco…

We report the first two cases of invasive human mycoses caused by the phaeoid ascomycete, Chaetomium perlucidum, and review the English literature regarding invasive Chaetomium infections. Fatal disseminated disease involving the brain, heart, lungs, and spleen is described in an acute myelogenous leukemia patient. A second patient with a history of asthma and chronic bronchiectasis experiencing right-middle-lobe syndrome grew C. perlucidum from lung tissue. This study adds C. perlucidum to the list of other known neurotropic Chaetomium species, C. atrobrunneum and C. strumarium, and also docu…
