YB1 associates with oncogenetic roles and poor prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the malignant tumor arising from the nasopharynx epithelium with ethnic and geographical distribution preference. Y-box binding protein-1 (YB1) is the highly expressed DNA/RNA-binding protein with cold shock domain, and enhanced YB1 expression was proved to be associated with many kinds of malignant tumors. There is no systematic study about the regulation of YB1 and cell proliferation, migration, invasion and stress granules (SGs) in NPC, and the relationship between YB1 expression and clinical characteristics and prognosis of NPC patients. We analyzed the mR

Nasopharyngeal low-grade papillary schneiderian carcinoma with cervical metastasis.

Low-grade papillary Schneiderian carcinoma (LGPSC) is a rare and newly described type of cancer arising from the Schneiderian epithelium. Owing to cellular atypia, it is difficult to differentiate this type from other papillomas and malignancies. Although this condition remains unclear, it is associated with mortality and recurrence. Therefore, treating physicians should be aware of the possibility of LGPSC for prompt diagnosis and treatment. In this article, we present an additional case of nasopharyngeal LGPSC with cervical lymph node metastasis and reviewed the 14 cases reported thus far in

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma With Bilateral Breast Metastasis: A Report of an Elusive Case.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a prevalent head and neck cancer, especially in Southeast Asia. Although its potential for distant metastasis is well established, metastasis to the breast has seldom been reported. To the best of our knowledge, this is the fourth report of a case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma metastasizing to bilateral breasts. A 35-year-old patient presented with left nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and a palpable mass in her left breast, without any cervical or axillary lymph nodal enlargement. Radiological examination with contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan and magnetic reso

Misdirection of a nasopharyngeal SARS-CoV-2 swab: An unexpected complication.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is based on detecting viral RNA of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the nasal cavities and the nasopharynx. Millions of nasopharyngeal swab tests are currently performed daily worldwide; complications of the procedure are uncommon, but occasionally they occur. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 79-year-old man who developed right orbital cellulitis after a nasopharyngeal swab test for SARS-CoV-2. He underwent two surgeries for nasal polyposis 20 and 15 years prior, that probably caused an easy pathw

Reverse sneezing as a clinical manifestation of nasopharyngeal-oropharyngeal fistula in a dog.

A 6-year-old spayed female Labrador retriever was evaluated for a 3-month history of intermittent reverse sneezing and gagging episodes. Pertinent findings at evaluation included frequent reverse sneezing and non-productive retching. No pathology was visible on sedated oral examination. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the skull revealed a gas-filled defect within the left ventral aspect of the soft palate. A non-eroded defect was present in the left caudoventral nasopharyngeal wall on nasopharyngoscopy. Surgical exploration revealed a nasopharyngeal-oropharyngeal fistula within the le

Nasopharyngeal microbiome analyses in otitis-prone and otitis-free children.

OBJECTIVES: About 10-15% children develop frequent acute otitis media (AOM) confirmed by tympanocentesis. These children are designated sOP (stringently defined otitis-prone) because all AOM episodes have been microbiologically confirmed. The cause of otitis-proneness in sOP children is multi-factorial, including frequent otopathogen nasopharyngeal (NP) colonization and deficiency in innate and adaptive immune responses. A largely unexplored contributor to otitis proneness is NP microbiome composition. Since the microbiome modulates otopathogen NP colonization and immune responses, we hypothes

Nasopharyngeal electrodes in temporal lobe epilepsy: A reappraisal of their diagnostic utility.

OBJECTIVE: To compare electroencephalography (EEG) recordings with nasopharyngeal electrodes (NPEs) plus anterior temporal electrodes (ATEs) (NPE recordings) and those with only ATEs (non-NPE recordings) for the detection of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in patients with suspected temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the initial EEGs of 229 patients that were recorded simultaneously with ATEs and NPEs in addition to the electrodes of the 10-20 system of electrode placement. Two data sets of NPE and non-NPE recordings were reviewed independently by thr

Tissue microbiota in nasopharyngeal adenoid and its association with pneumococcal carriage.

The microbial colonization in the nasopharynx is a prerequisite for the onset of infectious diseases. For successful infection, pathogens should overcome host defenses as well as compete effectively with the resident microbiota. Hence, elucidating the richness and diversity of the microbiome at the site of pathogen colonization is pivotal. Here, we investigated the adenoidal tissue microbiota collected through adenoidectomy to evaluate the impact of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Prospectively, children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and otitis media with effusion (OME) were enrolled. During

The roles of ribosomal proteins in nasopharyngeal cancer: culprits, sentinels or both.

Ribosomal protein genes encode products that are essential for cellular protein biosynthesis and are major components of ribosomes. Canonically, they are involved in the complex system of ribosome biogenesis pivotal to the catalysis of protein translation. Amid this tightly organised process, some ribosomal proteins have unique spatial and temporal physiological activity giving rise to their extra-ribosomal functions. Many of these extra-ribosomal roles pertain to cellular growth and differentiation, thus implicating the involvement of some ribosomal proteins in organogenesis. Consequently, dy

Alteration in Nasopharyngeal Microbiota Profile in Aged Patients with COVID-19.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) is an infectious virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmitted mainly through droplets and aerosol affecting the respiratory tract and lungs. Little is known regarding why some individuals are more susceptible than others and develop severe symptoms. In this study, we analyzed the nasopharyngeal microbiota profile of aged patients with COVID-19 (asymptomatic vs. symptomatic) vs. healthy individuals. We examined the nasopharynx swab of 84 aged-matched patients, out of which 27 were negative asymptomatic (NegA), 30

Alpha-fetoprotein-producing recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A case report.

Alpha-fetoprotein hardly increased due to nasopharyngeal cancer. In this article, we reported a 57-year-old male nasopharyngeal carcinoma patient who had posttreatment subscapular metastasis with high serum alpha-fetoprotein but negative plasma Epstein-Barr virus DNA. Pathology results indicated that the scapular mass was undifferentiated non-keratinizing carcinoma originated in the nasopharynx. Moreover, no liver lesion was detected by imaging examination. In view of the positive alpha-fetoprotein and alpha-fetoprotein messenger RNA staining result in the right scapular mass fine needle aspir

Circulating Tumor Cells: A Promising Biomarker in the Management of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignancy that arises from the mucosal epithelium of the nasopharynx, and its prognosis is relatively favorable. The 5-year overall survival rate in patients with locally advanced NPC currently exceeds 80%, but the development of individualized diagnosis and treatment at the molecular level is relatively lacking. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is the generic term for tumor cells that are present in the peripheral blood circulation. As a new biomarker with good clinical application prospects, the detection of CTCs has the advantages of being non-invasive, si
