Abdominal lymphangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms of the lymphatic vessels. Most are believed to be congenital, and they rarely present in the abdomen in adults. Omental lymphangiomas, in particular, are especially rare and can masquerade as malignancy, which requires further invasive workup. We report the case of an otherwise healthy man with abdominal discomfort, ascites, and a presentation initially concerning for malignancy. However, imaging and pathologic analyses later elucidated the lesion as an omental lymphangioma requiring different management. Treatment options are either resect

Sweat gland neoplasms are rare adnexal tumors that pose a diagnostic challenge for both, ophthalmologists and pathologists. Endocrine, mucin producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), considered to be analogous to the solid papillary mammary carcinoma is one such tumor. It usually affects elderly, is more frequent in women and has a predilection for skin of the eyelid. Although it has an indolent clinical course, EMPSGC is believed to be a precursor of the invasive mucinous carcinoma and has a potential for local recurrence. We report a series of 10 biopsy-proven EMPSGCs with their immunohistoc

Liposarcomas are malignant soft tissue neoplasms usually located in the retroperitoneum, head, neck and extremities. Although secondary invasion of the gastrointestinal tract by retroperitoneal sarcomas is frequent, primary involvement is uncommon. We report a young patient with Crohn's disease in remission presenting with intussusception of the colon due to a primary liposarcoma of the sigmoid. Emergency resection confirmed the diagnosis. The patient remains in remission after five years. This represents the youngest diagnosis of liposarcoma to date and the first occurring in the sigmoid. We

Verrucous epidermal nevi are hamartomatous lesions of the epidermis that, unlike other epidermal nevi (such as sebaceous nevus or nevus comedonicus), are rarely associated with malignant neoplasms. The majority of squamous cell carcinoma develop in linear or multiple epidermal nevus and rarely in solitary epidermal nevus. In general, the prognosis is favorable. We report a case of well-differentiated invasive squamous cell carcinoma arising from a multiple verrucous epidermal nevus. Although there is no consensus on prophylactic removal of epidermal nevus, its removal and biopsy should be cons

Liposarcoma is the name given to a group of soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) with adipocytic differentiation. As a group, liposarcomas are the second most common STSs in adults. In 1951 Kozonis et al published that in the English language only four cases of liposarcomas originating in the mediastinum had been described. Primary mediastinal liposarcoma is an uncommon neoplasm of intrathoracic origin. We present the case of a 47-year-old woman diagnosed with a large mediastinal mass with intrapericardial invasion and massive pericardial effusion; biopsies showed a mediastinal liposarcoma.

Microcalcifications are frequently associated with papillary thyroid cancers. Metastatic nodules from extrathyroid malignancies may mimic primary thyroid neoplasm on sonography, but do not present with microcalcifications. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman with a history of invasive ductal carcinomas of bilateral breasts, status post surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Four years after surgery, thyroid sonography revealed diffuse microcalcifications without nodular component. Core needle biopsy confirmed thyroid metastasis from primary breast cancer.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm most commonly originating in the salivary glands of head and neck region. The clinical and pathological findings typical of this tumour include slow growth, perineural invasion and potential local recurrence. Up to 50% of these tumours occur in the intraoral minor salivary glands usually in the hard palate. We present a case report of a 26-year-old woman who was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the right buccal mucosa. The peculiarity of the lesion and the approach we made is the key factor in the presentation.

A case of primary pulmonary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is presented. On this occasion, the lymphoma invaded the myocardium, an event which has not previously been reported in the literature. These neoplasms spread by proximity, and invasion of the pericardium, thoracic wall and oesophagus have been described. Our patient died from heart failure. Tumour myocardial infiltration may well have been the determinant cause through various mechanisms, including a decrease in myocardial contractility. Spread into the myocardium may be facilitated by bulky tumour infiltrates in the pleural space.

A case of thoracic mass infiltrating the chest wall mimicking a pulmonary invasive neoplasm is reported. Differential diagnosis and characteristic radiological and histological imaging had a decisive role in the case management. Actinomycosis is caused by a gram-positive, filamentous, microaerophilic bacteria. About 15% of the infections caused by Actinomyces involve the thorax. If not promptly diagnosed and treated thoracic actinomycosis may determine contiguous and systemic involvement. Actinomycosis is an anaerobic-to-microaerophilic bacteria and direct identification and isolation are diff

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the typical CT and chemical shift MRI findings and to evaluate their usefulness in the diagnosis of focal fatty replacement of the pancreas in five patients.
CONCLUSION: The presence of a perceptible focal low-attenuation lesion in the pancreas on CT and the reduction in signal intensity of the lesion on the opposed phase of chemical shift MR images are useful for differentiating focal fatty replacement of the pancreas from true pancreatic neoplasm. Therefore, these imaging findings obviate invasive diagnostic procedures and surgery in the

Trigeminal neuropathy is characterized by sensory disturbance of the division of trigeminal nerve, and sometimes is associated with pain. Trigeminal neuropathy secondary to perineural invasion of sinonasal lymphoma is extremely rare. Likewise, sinonasal lymphoma is infrequently demonstrated initially with cranial neuropathy. The present case served to broaden the differential diagnosis of secondary trigeminal neuropathy and to alert clinicians to cautiously assess perineural spread of occult neoplasm in sinonasal tract and larynx or pharynx for cases with evolving trigeminal neuropathy or even

Leiomyomas comprise fewer than 1% of esophageal neoplasms. Only 2% of leiomyomas are extraesophageal, and the remainder are intramural or intraluminal. A presumed intra-abdominal mass found at diagnostic laparoscopy was discovered to be an extraesophageal leiomyoma. Esophageal leiomyoma enucleation is most commonly accomplished via a thoracotomy. Increasingly, thoracoscopy has been used. An open transhiatal approach has also been described. Our patient underwent an uncomplicated transhiatal laparoscopic esophageal leiomyoma resection and benefited from the commonly recognized advantages associ

Gallbladder carcinoid tumor is a rare and aggressive neoplasm, usually lacking specific symptoms, as they typically are unassociated with the carcinoid syndrome, despite frequent hepatic spread. The patient was an 81-year-old man with right upper quadrant pain who underwent radical surgery for carcinoid tumor of the gallbladder with liver metastasis (preoperative diagnosis, carcinoma). We analyzed the outcome of previously reported cases of gallbladder carcinoid. Increasing tumor size and depth of invasion progressively compromised the 2-year survival. These findings underscore the importance

This report describes a patient with von Hippel-Lindau disease who presented with an 8-year history of a slow-growing, locally invasive vascularized lesion of the temporal bone involving the cerebellopontine angle. The mass, studied by computerized tomography scanning and magnetic resonance imaging techniques, was partly cystic in appearance. After removal of the mass, pathological studies confirmed a papillary cystic tumor with characteristics that have been described in tumors with an endolymphatic sac origin. These rare neoplasms constitute a distinct pathological entity and deserve wider r

A cystic mass arising from the right iliac fossa was an incidental finding at laparotomy and was treated conservatively after a biopsy had shown no evidence of malignancy. Nine years later the patient presented with shock and colonic bleeding. A large cystic lesion arising from the vermiform appendix and invading the sigmoid colon was found and excised. Histologic examination indicated that the underlying lesion was an inflamed mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix. Frank invasion of viscera by such lesions has not previously been described. Complications of such lesions and their association w

Abdominal hysterectomy after treatment of cervical cancer by radiation therapy is associated with a significant rate of postoperative vesicovaginal fistulas. In this series, five patients with invasive cancer of the cervix treated by radiation therapy developed new cervical or uterine neoplasms 1 to 27 years after treatment. All underwent abdominal hysterectomy without postoperative fistula formation. Success is attributed to cautious surgical technique and to the use of the omental pedicle graft to bring new vascularity to the vaginal apex and bladder base. The technique of forming an omental

Spiradenomas are benign cutaneous adnexal neoplasms with sweat gland differentiation that can manifest a broad spectrum of histomorphologic appearances. While they show a characteristic histopathologic phenotype and clinical management involves surgical excision with a low risk of recurrence, there have been unusual histopathologic variants of spiradenoma reported, including cases with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC)-like changes. Primary cutaneous ACC is a low-grade malignancy presenting as a subcutaneous mass with the potential for local invasion, perineural invasion, and high rates of local

BACKGROUND: There is only one report of Barrett's esophagus (BE) with mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasm (MiNEN). Herein, for the first time, we present a case with an aggressive esophageal MiNEN, as well as with both primary MiNEN and conventional adenocarcinoma, arising in BE.
CASE: A 68-year-old woman had been diagnosed with 0-IIa type adenocarcinoma in the background of long-segment BE, 45 months earlier. She underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and the pathological diagnosis was tubular adenocarcinoma, well-differentiated, with slight submucosal invasion. There

PURPOSE: Nonfunctioning gonadotropic pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) are among the most frequent neoplasms of pituitary gland. Although PitNETs are commonly considered benign, a notable part of patients suffer from tumor recurrence after treatment. Invasive growth of pituitary tumor is among the most important prognostic factors. Since molecular features of invasiveness are of potential clinical usefulness, this study was aimed to verify whether invasive and noninvasive nonfunctioning gonadotropic PitNETs differ in the miRNA expression profile and whether the differences could provid

Microfluidic chemical gradient generators enable precise spatiotemporal control of chemotactic signals to study cellular behavior with high resolution and reliability. However, time and cost consuming preparation steps for cell adhesion in microchannels as well as requirement of pumping facilities usually complicate the application of the microfluidic assays. Here, we introduce a simple strategy for preparation of a reusable and stand-alone microfluidic gradient generator to study cellular behavior. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is directly mounted on the commercial polystyrene-based cell cultur
