The development of renal tubular cell tumors by the end of experimental week 32 was studied in inbred Wistar male rats fed a diet containing 1,000 or 500 ppm N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethylnitrosamine (EHEN) for 2 weeks and then given 1,00 ppm basic lead acetate (LA) for 20 weeks. A low dose of LA enhanced the development of renal tubular cell tumors in rats treated with EHEN and increased the number and size of the tumors. As shown in earlier studies, the lodgement of circulating tumour cells in the lungs is reduced by thrombocytopenia in both normal and traumatized rats. Other experiments have shown that thrombocytopenia and antiserotonin treatment with ketanserin, which has a selective effect on 5-HT2 receptors, decrease the hepatic lodgement of intraportally injected tumour cells. The present studies show that treatment with ketanserin also reduces the lodgement of i.v.-injected tumour cells in the lungs in both normal and traumatized rats.

Wistar-Furth (WF) strain rats have been shown to have a high incidence of spontaneous colon cancer. We have compared the alkaline phosphatase (AP) isoenzymes in colonic carcinomas of these inbred WF strain rats with the isoenzymes in the non-carcinomatous colon of the same strain and the normal colon of Wistar strain rats, from which the WF strain was derived. The immunogenicity of 28 transplanted naturally arising tumors of the inbred WAB/Not rat was investigated at early passages in strictly syngeneic, contemporary animals. A unique electrophoretic form of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-Z), formerly observed in a choriocarcinoma cell line (JEG-3) and first-trimester placenta, has been shown to be the same as that produced in hydatidiform mole and term placenta. Purified rat tumor thyroglobulin from the experimental rat thyroid tumor, line 1-1C2, was studied for its thyroid hormone content after in vivo and in vitro iodination and compared with normal and desialylated normal rat thyroglobulin. Fundamental examination was carried out on the liberation of single cells from hepatoma cells in culture. dRLa-74 cells derived from rat hepatoma, which hardly disperse as single cell suspensions with several proteolytic enzymes or EDTA alone, dispersed with a high yield of single cells by the combination of trypsin and EDTA. HUH-6 cells derived from human hepatoblastoma also showed similar results. The degree of cell dissociation by the combination was dependent on the incubation temperature or pH.
