Keratinocyte carcinomas (KC) are the most common malignant human neoplasms. Although surgery and destructive approaches are first-line treatments, topical therapies are commonly used. Due to limited uptake of topical agents across the skin barrier, clearance rates are often sub-optimal. In pre-clinical investigations, ablative fractional laser (AFL)-assisted drug delivery has demonstrated improved uptake of topical drugs commonly used to treat KC. In 22 clinical trials, the effect of AFL-assisted treatments has been investigated for actinic keratosis (AK; n = 14), Bowen's disease (BD; n = 5),

In this review the basic principles of UV-induced carcinogenesis are summarized and the state of the art diagnosis and therapeutic strategies are discussed. The prevalent keratinocyte-derived neoplasms of the skin are basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Cutaneous melanoma is less frequent but associated with high mortality. Common risk factors for all three tumor entities include sun exposure and DNA-repair deficiencies. Photocarcinogenesis follows a multistep model of cancer development in which ultraviolet-induced DNA damage leads to mutations resulting in activation of oncogenes or sil

Isolated lymphoma of the base of the tongue is a relatively rare condition. The clinical presentation may vary from a submucosal mass with a cystic appearance to an ulcerated lesion. In the present case, a cystic mass was identified in a patient admitted with a sore throat. Pathological examination confirmed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The clinical and pathological picture of lymphomas covers a wide spectrum and the rate of occurrence in the oral cavity is 3-5%. Among all malignant tumors of the oral cavity, lymphomas represent the third most common type of tumor, following squamous cell ca

The expression of p34cdc2 has been examined in normal, hyperplastic, and malignant oral epithelia and lymphoid tissues. Four monoclonal antibodies were prepared against Xenopus p34cdc2, three of which react specifically with human p34cdc2 and not with p33cdk2. These produced similar patterns of staining in both fixed and frozen sections of human material. Staining occurred mainly in the proliferative compartments of normal and hyperplastic tissues. In normal oral epithelia, parabasal and basal cells were the most strongly stained, with lighter cytoplasmic staining in lower prickle cells. In to

A monoclonal antikeratin antibody, designated AEl, was used to stain frozen sections of normal and abnormal human skin by the immunofluorescence and peroxidase-antiperoxidase techniques. In normal human epidermis and ichthyosis vulgaris, a nonproliferative epidermal disease, this antibody selectively stained epidermal basal cells. Very different staining patterns were observed in various other epidermal diseases. A suprabasal staining pattern was observed in psoriasis (16 cases), verruca (9), seborrheic keratosis (5), actinic keratosis (2), as well as the epidermis adjacent to certain epiderma

A 49-year-old woman with a past history of several infundibular cysts in the head and neck region presented with a 6-month history of a nonhealing perianal abscess on a background of 13 years of chronic sacral-buttock abscesses and discharging sinuses as part of hidradenitis suppurativa. After 2 surgical procedures and inadequate healing, a wide local excision was performed. The surgical specimen revealed an extensive, infiltrating, cystic and deeply penetrating, dermal and subcutaneous neoplasm with multiple fistulous tracts extending to the skin surface. The histopathology was consistent wit

BACKGROUND: Cytokeratin 19 (CK19) is low-molecular weight CK with widespread expression in various malignancies including those of lung, colon, and breast. Occasional studies have also indicated prognostic utility of CK19 in nonsmall cell lung carcinomas, with better prognosis among squamous cell carcinoma cases with strong CK19 immunostaining. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression and potential roles of CK19 immunostaining in cases of carcinoma lung as well as other metastatic intrathoracic neoplasms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To date, no consensus guidelines have been published that systematically guide delineation of primary and nodal Clinical Target Volumes (CTVs) in patients who require post-operative radiotherapy (PORT) for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). As a result, significant individual, institutional and national variation exists in the way that CTVs are delineated in the post-operative setting, leading to considerable heterogeneity in radiotherapy treatment.
METHODS: A multi-disciplinary group of experts was convened by the European Society for Radiotherapy and Onco

Salivary gland tumors occur in about 3% of the head and neck tumors, and among the salivary gland tumors, parotid gland tumor occurs in about 80%. Because of its low frequency and small cases, it is hard to establish the epidemiologic characteristics of the tumors. This study was performed retrospectively from February 1987 to August 2010. There were 95 male, and 76 female patients. Most of the patients complained of the painless and progressively enlarged mass in the preauricular area. Peak incidence of benign parotid gland tumor was at the fifth decade of life. In the malignant tumors, peak

BACKGROUND: BCL2L12 is a recently identified gene belonging to the BCL2 family, members of which are implicated in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We have recently shown that BCL2L12 mRNA expression is an unfavorable prognostic indicator in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and that BCL2L12 can be regarded as a novel, useful tissue biomarker for the prediction of NPC patients' short-term relapse. The aim of this study was to analyze the mRNA expression of the novel apoptosis-related gene BCL2L12 in patients with HNSCC.
METHODS: Total RNA was isolated from 53 malignant tumors origi

Infection with High Risk (HR) Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs) is the main aetiological agent of Cervical Squamous Cell Carcinoma (CSCC) and also associated in a subgroup of other neoplasms, including Oropharyngeal Squamous cell Carcinoma (OPSCC). HPV infection, in genital as in oral mucosa, can also be subclinical or associated with benign proliferative lesions (common warts, condylomas, papillomas) caused mostly by infection with Low Risk (LR)-HPVs. In the last decades, extensive research has resulted in growing knowledge on HPV biology and specifically viral life cycle, biochemical properties

Inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses is a neoplastic growth of epithelium which inverts into the underlying stroma rather than proliferating outward from the surface. These neoplasms probably arise from the area of the lateral nasal wall. Inverted papilloma is characterized by its: A. capacity to destroy; B. tendency to recur; and C. association with malignancy. During the past decade, we have come to understand better the histologic, biologic, and anatomic features of this tumor. More studies focusing on inverted papilloma have been published in recent years, and the authors o

Complex interactions take place during cancer formation and progression. In this regard, there has been increasing focus on the non-malignant cells that make up the tumour microenvironment (TME), and how they interact with malignant tumour cells. TME is highly heterogeneous and has a major influence on tumour behaviour and therapy response. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), one of the main components of the TME, establish dangerous liaisons with cancer cells and other components of the TME to shape a tumour-supportive environment in many types of cancer. Head and neck squamous cell carcino

Papillomaviruses (PVs) are circular double-stranded DNA virus belonging to Papillomaviridae family. During the infection cycle, PVs translate proteins that can influence cell growth and differentiation, leading to epidermal hyperplasia and papillomas (warts) or malignant neoplasms. Canis familiaris papillomaviruses (CPVs) have been associated with different lesions, such as oral and cutaneous papillomatosis, pigmented plaques, and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). Here, we report a clinical case of a mixed bred female dog with pigmented plaques induced by CPV16 (Chipapillomavirus 2) that progre

The landscape of neoplastic pathology of the oesophagus is dominated by malignancies of epithelial origin, in particular by oesophageal adenocarcinoma and oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma. However, several other histopathological variants can be distinguished, some associated with peculiar histopathological profiles and prognostic behaviours and frequently underrecognized in clinical practice. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive characterization of the main morphological and clinical features of these rare variants of oesophageal neoplastic lesions.

An epithelioid trophoblastic tumor is a rare form of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia that mostly affects the uterus and endocervix in female patients of the reproductive age group. The tumor is believed to arise from chorion leave-type intermediate trophoblast. The epithelioid trophoblastic tumor in men is extremely rare and mostly described in association with mixed germ cell tumors of the testis. It is more commonly identified at the metastatic sites than in the testis. The epithelioid trophoblastic tumor should be differentiated from placental site trophoblastic tumor and squamous cell

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (HNCSCC) is an aggressive metastatic neoplasm. While conventional therapies exist, they often afford suboptimal outcomes. Amygdalin (AMG) is a natural anticancer agent, but its clinical utility is hindered by cyanide toxicity, poor stability, and minimal bioavailability.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a hyaluronic acid-coated, chitosan- based nanocomposite functionalized with reduced graphene oxide and zinc oxide (CS/rGO-ZnO/HA) for AMG encapsulation. The formulation's therapeutic efficacy, and systemic toxicity will
