Incidence, Predictors, Management, and Outcome of Paralytic Ileus in Acute Pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Paralytic ileus is a frequent complication of acute pancreatitis (AP), contributing to increased morbidity, nutritional compromise, and risk of infection. Despite its clinical relevance, data on its incidence, predictors, management, and outcomes in AP remain limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 426 adult patients admitted with AP over a 3-year period at a tertiary-care center. The primary outcome was paralytic ileus; secondary outcomes included infected necrosis, intervention, and mortality. Multivariate logistic regression identified independent predictors exp

Evaluation of the laxative effects of Taraxacum officinale using experimental animal models.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Taraxacum officinale F.H.Wigg. has been traditionally used as a natural laxative in various ethnopharmacological systems. Nevertheless, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy, particularly in treating gastrointestinal disorders like constipation, is still scarce. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to evaluate the laxative properties of the methanolic extract derived from the aerial parts of T. officinale F by examining its impact on charcoal meal transit through the small intestine and on fecal output in a rodent model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acute toxicit

The multi-omics insights into mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of cholelithiasis.

Cholelithiasis is the most prevalent biliary disease globally, and mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in its pathogenesis. However, the exact mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we used Summary-data-based Mendelian randomization (SMR) and colocalization analysis, integrating multi-omics data, to investigate the association between mitochondrial-related genes and cholelithiasis. Summary-level quantitative trait loci (QTL) data at methylation, RNA, and protein levels were retrieved from European cohort studies. We integrated multi-omics data, including methylation QTL

A retrospective analysis of epidemiology, clinical features of envenomation, and in-patient management of snakebites in a model secondary hospital of Assam, North-east India.

Assam, a Northeastern State of India, is inhabited by several venomous snake species causing substantial morbidity and mortality. The data on the epidemiology of snakebites and their management is underreported in this region. Hence, a secondary health-based retrospective study was carried out at Demow Model Hospital, Sivasagar, Assam, to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological profile of snakebite cases reported in this rural hospital and their management. Snakebites occurring between April 2018 to August 2022 were reviewed based on socio-demographic details of the patient, clinical symptom

Sugammadex enhances recovery after abdominal surgery in cancer patients: a real-world, observational study.

BACKGROUND: Sugammadex, a modified γ-cyclodextrin that selectively binds to muscle relaxants, is increasingly being used to reverse neuromuscular blockade after surgery, but the potential benefits for cancer patients in the real-world setting are obscure. METHODS: This was a real-world, retrospective study. Adult cancer patients (≥18 years) undergoing abdominal surgery at Jiangsu Cancer Hospital, a tertiary care cancer hospital in China, between 2 March 2018 and 25 November 2019, were included in the analysis. Patients received 2 mg/kg (maximally 200 mg) sugammadex based on the discretion of

Report of a case of necrotizing autoimmune myopathy with thymoma-associated myasthenia gravis.

Purpose: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease and closely related to thymoma. Inflammatory myopathy may accompany with other autoimmune diseases. However, concurrence of inflammatory myopathy and MG is very rare. Necrotizing autoimmune myopathy (NAM), a rare form of inflammatory myopathy, is characterized by necrosis and regeneration of myocytes in proximal muscles without significant inflammation. The aim of the study was to report a rare case of NAM and concomitant thymoma-associated MG after thymectomy.Materials and methods/results: A 27-year-old female patient presented with mus

Natural probes for cholinergic sites: L-bebeerine actions on the neuromuscular transmission, the nicotinic receptor/ionic channel complex, and contraction of skeletal muscles.

The mechanisms underlying the muscle relaxant activity of 1-bebeerine (BB), a tertiary alkaloid isolated from the roots of Chondrodendron platyphyllum, were examined in mammalian and amphibian skeletal muscles. Injections of BB (0.05-1 g/kg, i.p.) in rats caused a dose-related flaccid paralysis and respiratory arrest at high doses. In isolated rat diaphragm and toad sartorius muscles, BB depressed the indirectly elicited muscle twitches (IC50: 228 microM and 5.4 microM, respectively, at 22 degrees C) and blocked the nerve-elicited muscle action potential. The neuromuscular blockade was not rev

[Inhibitory action of chlorpromazine on intestinal movement in mice and its antagonistic agents].

Adynamic ileus is a toxic effect produced by chlorpromazine (Chl). The present study is to analyze the inhibitory action of Chl on the intestinal movement of mice and to search its antagonistic remedies. Inhibition was evaluated by 2 tests: the loss of defecation reflex and the inhibited transport of phenol red in the intestinal tract. Chl (1-2 mg.kg-1 i.p. or 1 microgram per mouse i.c.v.) inhibited the intestinal movement powerfully. Scopolamine (Sco 4 mg.kg-1 i.p. or 4-8 micrograms per mouse i.c.v.) produced the same effect. The i.v. ED50 (L95) of Chl and Sco for inhibition of the defecation

AS-4370, a new gastrokinetic agent, enhances upper gastrointestinal motor activity in conscious dogs.

The effects of AS-4370 [4-amino-5-chloro-2-ethoxy-N-(4-(4-fluorobenzyl)-2 morpholinyl)methyl)benzamide citrate] on gastrointestinal (GI) motor activity were compared with those of cisapride and metoclopramide in conscious dogs with force transducers implanted chronically. In postprandial state, AS-4370 given 0.2 to 1 mg/kg i.v. or 1 mg/kg intraduodenally (i.d.) stimulated the antral and duodenal motor activity without affecting the colonic motor activity. Cisapride at 0.2 to 1 mg/kg i.v. or 1 mg/kg i.d. stimulated the motor activity in all sites of the GI tract from the stomach to the colon si

[Ro 15-1788 antagonizes reliably the Benzodiazepine effect after Flunitrazepam combination anesthesias].

INTRODUCTION: The imidazobenzodiazepine Ro 15-1788 has been shown to block the central effects of benzodiazepines without severe side effects in animals studies and human volunteers. Benzodiazepine premedication and benzodiazepine/opioid combinations are often used in anesthesiology. A prolonged benzodiazepine action in combination with narcotics can cause problems in the postoperative period such as respiratory depression or aspiration of gastric contents due to reduced vigilance. Therefore, a reversal of the central effects of benzodiazepines can be of advantage postoperatively. This study w
