AIM: To investigate the effects of solutions composed of molecules with both chelating and surfactant properties on kidney stones.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Kidney stones and their fragments were obtained during ureteroscopy and retrograde intrarenal surgery, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, and stone extraction from the kidney performed in patients with urolithiasis. For the experiment, a solution was prepared based on a composition of iminodiacetate derivatives of fatty acid glycerides and iminodiacetate derivatives of polysaccharides. Stones of known mass were processed with this solution, dried

BACKGROUND: Urinary stone treatment is of interest from a health-economic point of view because of competing technical approaches, high incidence and high recurrence rates. In France, since the release of the activity-based funding called T2A (for Tarification A l'Activité), concerns about possibly induced overactivity have been increasing. A flat-sum-based payment per stone episode has even been proposed. This study aims to describe different parameters, such as reintervention rates.
METHODS: Using the linkage between different stays of one patient, we studied multiple stays and procedures i

OBJECTIVE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the main method for pyonephrosis or lithotripsy in urology. However, it often comes with high risk, as the inaccurate puncture inevitably causes bleeding, intra- and post-operative complications. So, a new inter-disciplinary approach is needed to perform the puncture more accurately.
METHODS: 3 signs made of lead were marked onto the skin of the posterior side of the waist of a domestic pig or a patient, which was scanned by computed tomography (CT). Based on the CT images, the computer design and the 3D printing, a navigation template made of

INTRODUCTION: Staghorn calculi (SC) occupy the renal pelvis and calyces and are common in females linked to repeated urinary tract infections (UTIs). Judicious surgery planning reduces the chance of further damage to the kidney due to renal SCs. Open stone surgery (OSS) is one of the various operative techniques to remove such huge stones with one operative intervention and protect the kidney from ongoing functional damage.
CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old male patient presented with right-sided renal colic pain, and on further investigations, he was diagnosed with a large renal stone responsible f

Although kidney stones are less common in children than in adults, incidence in children is rising. Kidney stones may lead to significant morbidity in addition to escalating medical costs. Clinical presentation is variable. Bilateral kidney stones in a younger child should prompt work-up for primary hyperoxaluria. Metabolic abnormalities are more frequent in children and can result in frequent stone recurrence. Whole exome sequencing data shows genetic defects in about 30% of stone formers. 24 h urine collection should be conducted when patient receives his usual diet and fluid intake with nor

BACKGROUND: Flexible ureterorenoscopy (FURS) and holmium laser lithotripsy is currently considered as one of the treatment options for large renal calculi. It has been shown to be safer than percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The latter can sometimes be complicated by the formation of intrarenal arteriovenous malformation (AVM). AVM is extremely rare following FURS and laser lithotripsy. Indeed only one case has been reported on reviewing the literature up to June 2018. We report on the second case illustrating the possibility of developing this major complication following this procedure.

Patients presenting with nephrolithiasis often undergo repeated imaging studies before, during, and after management. Considering the significant risk of stone recurrence in primary stone-formers, repeated imaging studies are not uncommon. Cumulative effects of ionizing radiation exposure from various imaging studies could potentially increase the risk for developing cataracts and solid malignancies in urolithiasis patients. Therefore, practitioners planning or performing imaging studies with ionizing radiation are compelled to keep radiation exposure to humans and the environment as low as po

INTRODUCTION: The European Association of Urology (EAU) and the American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines recommend percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) as the first-line treatment of renal stones greater than 20 mm, however multistage retrograde intrarenal stone surgery (RIRS) is reported to have high stone-free rates (SFR), fewer complications and a rapid learning curve. This study presents our experience of RIRS in the management of 2 cm-4 cm renal stones.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of all patients who underwent RIRS for 2 cm-4 cm renal stones over a p

We report our experience with a mini-nephroscope connected to pressure suction as a modified minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy (MPCNL) technique to manage intrarenal stones in patients with a urinary tract infection (UTI). We used a mini-nephroscope connected to pressure suction to aspirate infected urine and reduce intrapelvic pressure. From January 2010 to June 2014, we treated 683 patients with intrarenal stones and UTI with this modified MPCNL technique in our department (Group A). Patients with an intrarenal stone and without UTI treated by this modified MPCNL (Group B, N =

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the changes in prevalence and treatment of upper urinary tract stone disease in the UK over the last 10 years.
METHODS: Data from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) website (http://www.hesonline.nhs.uk) were extracted, summarized and presented.
RESULTS: The number of upper urinary tract stone hospital episodes increased by 63% to 83,050 in the 10-year period. The use of shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) for treating all upper tract stones increased from 14,491 cases in 2000-2001 to 22,402 cases in 2010 (a 55% increase) with a 69% increase in lithotripsy for renal stones

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection poses unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Literature on the perioperative management and outcomes of curative surgery for UTUC in people living with HIV (PLWH), particularly when complicated by conditions such as staghorn calculi, is exceptionally scarce.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 65-year-old male presented with a 1-week history of urinary frequency and urgency. Two months prior, he had undergone ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy for a left staghorn calculus (details unav

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Elevated intrarenal pressure (IRP) during flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) and retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is increasingly recognized as a key driver of infectious and inflammatory complications. Novel devices integrating real-time pressure monitoring and active suction have been developed to address this modifiable risk factor. This review evaluates emerging intelligent pressure-controlled systems and examines whether they represent the future standard in endourological practice.
RECENT FINDINGS: Intelligent pressure-controlled ureteral access sheaths (IPC-UAS) and re

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Urinary tract infections (UTI) following ureteroscopy (URS) occur in about 4% of patients. Due to the resistant bacterial strains we encounter in our institution, we retrospectively examined whether a double-drug antibiotic prophylactic treatment (APT) can reduce urosepsis after URS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February 2015 and March 2016, we performed 344 URS for stone treatment. Starting from September 2015, we changed the APT. Exclusion criteria included procedures involving percutaneous nephrolithotomy, pediatric or pregnant patients, and patients with pre

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggested the link between nephrolithiasis and renal function impairment. We aimed to determine the renal function profile and potential factors associated with reduced renal function amongst renal stone formers in multi-ethnic Asians.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy between May 2015 and December 2019. Reduced renal function was defined as having estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Renal stone samples were collected and quantified using infrared spectroscopy. Potentia

INTRODUCTION: The forgotten ureteral stents remain a urological dilemma and complications related to it can be lethal for the patient. The management of such stents require lithotripsy and endourological techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 19 cases of forgotten stents managed between 1998 and 2003. The mean patient age was 32 +/- l2 years, male to female ratio 17:2 and the mean duration of stents in urinary system was 24.2 months (7 months to l0 years). The stent were complicated in 14 patients and 5 patients had uncomplicated stents. The stents were

INTRODUCTION: Endourological management of upper urinary tract stones has increased substantially, with ureteroscopy (URS) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) now representing standard treatment modalities. Concurrently, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) are rising. While SGLT2is provide established cardiovascular and renal benefits, their impact on perioperative outcomes in endourological stone surgery remains unclear.
METHODS: In this retrospective single-centre cohort study, all patients undergoing URS, P

Urolithiasis is a common and recurrent urinary tract disorder in which stone size, composition, location, anatomy, and patient factors influence the choice and success of treatment. Although shock wave lithotripsy (SWL), ureteroscopy (URS), and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) provide effective treatment for many patients, residual fragments, difficult calyceal access, repeated procedures, tissue trauma, and procedure-specific risks remain relevant clinical challenges. These limitations have encouraged investigation of miniature, wirelessly controlled systems that could reach confined regio
