Patterns of Neural Functional Connectivity in Infants at Familial Risk of Developmental Dyslexia.

IMPORTANCE: Developmental dyslexia is a heritable learning disability affecting 7% to 10% of the general population and can have detrimental impacts on mental health and vocational potential. Individuals with dyslexia show altered functional organization of the language and reading neural networks; however, it remains unknown how early in life these neural network alterations might emerge. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the early emergence of large-scale neural functional connectivity (FC) underlying long-term language and reading development is altered in infants with a familial history of

[Research progress on the neuromodulation targets in stroke rehabilitation].

Recent years have witnessed significant advances in neuromodulation techniques for stroke rehabilitation, especially in ameliorating motor deficits, positioning them as a key focus in both research and clinical practice. The selection of stimulation targets is crucial, as different sites engage distinct neural mechanisms and yield varied therapeutic outcomes. This review systematically synthesizes evidence from neuromodulation studies that target key regions, including the cerebral hemispheres, sensorimotor cortex, cerebellum, and vagus nerve. By analyzing the stimulation protocols, therapeuti

Identification and functional analysis of a novel mutation in the PAX3 gene associated with Waardenburg syndrome type I.

Waardenburg syndrome type 1 (WS1) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder of neural crest cells (NCC) characterized by congenital sensorineural hearing loss, dystopia canthorum, and abnormal iris pigmentation. WS1 is due to loss-of-function mutations in paired box gene 3 (PAX3). Here, we identified a novel PAX3 mutation (c.808C>G, p.R270G) in a three-generation Chinese family with WS1, and then analyzed its in vitro activities. The R270G PAX3 retained nuclear distribution and normal DNA-binding ability; however, it failed to activate MITF promoter, suggesting that haploinsufficiency may

Causes of neurologic deterioration following surgical treatment of cervical myelopathy.

Neurologic deterioration was analyzed in 110 patients with surgically treated cervical myelopathy secondary to soft disc hernia or spondylosis. Follow-up periods ranged from 2 to 14 years, with an average of 6 years. Of 110 patients, 29 suffered neurologic deterioration. In most of the patients, deterioration occurred within the first year after surgery. Causes of deterioration were divided into three categories: direct trauma to neural tissue during surgery (a preventable complication); instability of the spine, progression of spondylotic changes above or below the level of fusion, and non-un

Consonant-Vowel Transition Models Based on Deep Learning for Objective Evaluation of Articulation.

Spectro-temporal dynamics of consonant-vowel (CV) transition regions are considered to provide robust cues related to articulation. In this work, we propose an objective measure of precise articulation, dubbed the objective articulation measure (OAM), by analyzing the CV transitions segmented around vowel onsets. The OAM is derived based on the posteriors of a convolutional neural network pre-trained to classify between different consonants using CV regions as input. We demonstrate that the OAM is correlated with perceptual measures in a variety of contexts including (a) adult dysarthric speec

[Research progress on mechanism of acupuncture for chronic atrophic gastritis].

With the purpose of providing more references of acupuncture for chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), the research achievements and action mechanism of acupuncture for CAG during past 20 years are summarized and analyzed. It is found that acupuncture could improve immune function, adjust central neural pathways, regulate gastroi-ntestinal hormone, increase stomach blood flow, regulate cytokines, increase gastric dynamics, control the gastric acid secretion, improve inflammatory response and regulate cell proliferation and apoptosis, which could strengthen gastric mucosa barrier. In addition, seve

Muribaculaceae regulate β-muricholic acid to target S1PR2 signaling and reduce neurological injury in intracerebral hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal flora imbalance after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) aggravates neuroinflammation and secondary brain injury through the gut-brain axis, although the specific mechanism remains unclear. This study focuses on the regulatory effects of Muribaculaceae and β-muricholic acid (β-MA, a primary bile acid) on neurological injury after ICH, aiming to reveal the molecular mechanism by which it improves the prognosis of ICH through the sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 2 (S1PR2). METHODS: A mouse ICH model was constructed by collagenase induction to evaluate the changes in gut micro

Neuromonitoring Correlates of Expertise Level in Surgical Performers: A Systematic Review.

Surgical expertise does not have a clear definition and is often culturally associated with power, authority, prestige, and case number rather than more objective proxies of excellence. Multiple models of expertise progression have been proposed including the Dreyfus model, however, they all currently require subjective evaluation of skill. Recently, efforts have been made to improve the ways in which surgical excellence is measured and expertise is defined using artificial intelligence, video recordings, and accelerometers. However, these aforementioned methods of assessment are still subject

Predicting upper limb motor recovery in subacute stroke patients via fNIRS-measured cerebral functional responses induced by robotic training.

BACKGROUND: Neural activation induced by upper extremity robot-assisted training (UE-RAT) helps characterize adaptive changes in the brains of poststroke patients, revealing differences in recovery potential among patients. However, it remains unclear whether these task-related neural activities can effectively predict rehabilitation outcomes. In this study, we utilized functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure participants' neural activity profiles during resting and UE-RAT tasks and developed models via machine learning to verify whether task-related functional brain responses

Neural correlates of working memory and compensation at different stages of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease.

Working memory (WM) impairment is one of the most frequent cognitive deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it is not known how neural activity is altered and compensatory responses eventually fail during progression. We aimed to elucidate neural correlates of WM and compensatory mechanisms in PD. Eighteen cognitively normal PD patients (PD-CogNL), 16 with PD with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI), 11 with PD with dementia (PDD), and 17 healthy controls (HCs) were evaluated. Subjects performed an n-back task. Functional MRI data were analyzed by event-related analysis for correct resp

Detection of neurovascular structures using injection pressure in blockade of brachial plexus in rat.

In the last few decades there has been a great development of regional anesthesia; all the postulates are defined and all the techniques of usage are perfected. However, like any other medical procedure, the block of brachial plexus carries a risk of certain unwanted complications, like possible intraneural and intravascular injections. The reason for great discrepancy between the injury of brachial plexus and other periphery nerves while performing the nerve blockade is the frequent usage of this block, but also the specific proximity of neurovascular structures in axilla. The purpose of this

Induction of striatal neurogenesis and generation of region-specific functional mature neurons after ischemia by growth factors. Laboratory investigation.

OBJECT: The capacity to replace lost neurons after insults is retained by several regions of adult mammalian brains. However, it is unknown how many neurons actually replace and mature into region-specific functional neurons to restore lost brain function. In this paper, the authors asked whether neuronal regeneration could be achieved efficaciously by growth factor treatment using a global ischemia model in rats, and they analyzed neuronal long-term maturation processes. METHODS: Rat global ischemia using a modified 4-vessel occlusion model was used to induce consistent ischemic neuronal inj
