Intelligent Evaluation of Global Spinal Alignment by a Decentralized Convolutional Neural Network.

Degenerative changes of the spine can cause spinal misalignment, with part of the spine arching beyond normal limits or moving in an incorrect direction, potentially resulting in back pain and significantly limiting a person's mobility. The most important parameters related to spinal misalignment include pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt, lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and cervical lordosis. As a general rule, alignment of the spine for diagnosis and surgical treatment is estimated based on geometrical parameters measured manually by experienced doctors. However, these measurements consume th

Detection of Glaucoma from Fundus Images Using Novel Evolutionary-Based Deep Neural Network.

Glaucoma is an asymptotic condition that damages the optic nerves of a human eye. Glaucoma is frequently caused due to abnormally high pressure in an eye that leads to permanent blindness. Detecting glaucoma at an initial phase has the possibility of curing this disease, but diagnosing accurately is considered as a challenging task. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method known as a glaucoma detection system that performs the diagnosis of glaucoma by exploiting the prescribed characteristics. The significant intention of this paper involves diagnosing the glaucoma disease present at the

Video recognition of simple mastoidectomy using convolutional neural networks: Detection and segmentation of surgical tools and anatomical regions.

A simple mastoidectomy is used to remove inflammation of the mastoid cavity and to create a route to the skull base and middle ear. However, due to the complexity and difficulty of the simple mastoidectomy, implementing robot vision for assisted surgery is a challenge. To overcome this issue using a convolutional neural network architecture in a surgical environment, each surgical instrument and anatomical region must be distinguishable in real time. To meet this condition, we used the latest instance segmentation architecture, YOLACT. In this study, a data set comprising 5,319 extracted frame

A New Smartphone-Based Optic Nerve Head Biometric for Verification and Change Detection.

PURPOSE: Lens adapted smartphones are being used regularly instead of ophthalmoscopes. The most common causes of preventable blindness in the world, which are glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, can develop asymptomatic changes to the optic nerve head (ONH) especially in the developing world where there is a dire shortage of ophthalmologists but ubiquitous mobile phones. We developed a proof-of-concept ONH biometric (application [APP]) to use as a routine biometric on a mobile phone. The unique blood vessel pattern is verified if it maps on to a previously enrolled image. METHODS: The iKey APP

Contrast-Attentive Thoracic Disease Recognition With Dual-Weighting Graph Reasoning.

Automatic thoracic disease diagnosis is a rising research topic in the medical imaging community, with many potential applications. However, the inconsistent appearances and high complexities of various lesions in chest X-rays currently hinder the development of a reliable and robust intelligent diagnosis system. Attending to the high-probability abnormal regions and exploiting the priori of a related knowledge graph offers one promising route to addressing these issues. As such, in this paper, we propose two contrastive abnormal attention models and a dual-weighting graph convolution to impro

MET Exon 14 Skipping: A Case Study for the Detection of Genetic Variants in Cancer Driver Genes by Deep Learning.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of alternative splicing (AS) is frequently observed in cancer and might represent an important signature for tumor progression and therapy. Exon skipping (ES) represents one of the most frequent AS events, and in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) MET exon 14 skipping was shown to be targetable. METHODS: We constructed neural networks (NN/CNN) specifically designed to detect MET exon 14 skipping events using RNAseq data. Furthermore, for discovery purposes we also developed a sparsely connected autoencoder to identify uncharacterized MET isoforms. RESULTS: The neural n

Recognition and Repetition Counting for Local Muscular Endurance Exercises in Exercise-Based Rehabilitation: A Comparative Study Using Artificial Intelligence Models.

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation requires patients to perform a set of certain prescribed exercises a specific number of times. Local muscular endurance exercises are an important part of the rehabilitation program. Automatic exercise recognition and repetition counting, from wearable sensor data, is an important technology to enable patients to perform exercises independently in remote settings, e.g., their own home. In this paper, we first report on a comparison of traditional approaches to exercise recognition and repetition counting (supervised ML and peak detection) with Convolutiona

Automated multi-class classification of skin lesions through deep convolutional neural network with dermoscopic images.

As an analytic tool in medicine, deep learning has gained great attention and opened new ways for disease diagnosis. Recent studies validate the effectiveness of deep learning algorithms for binary classification of skin lesions (i.e., melanomas and nevi classes) with dermoscopic images. Nonetheless, those binary classification methods cannot be applied to the general clinical situation of skin cancer screening in which multi-class classification must be taken into account. The main objective of this research is to develop, implement, and calibrate an advanced deep learning model in the contex
