[Terminology and Pathophysiology of Overactive Bladder (OAB)].

In 2002, the International Continence Society defined the term overactive bladder (OAB) as a symptom syndrome that is accompanied by urgency with or without urge incontinence, frequency and nocturia. A proven urinary tract infection or other obvious pathologies must be excluded. The pathophysiology of OAB has not been clarified in detail and is the subject of ongoing research, so partially overlapping hypotheses exist. The urothelium-based hypothesis suggests functional changes of urothelial receptors as well as functional changes regarding the sensitivity and coupling of the suburothelial myof

The 'scanning hypothesis' of rapid eye movements during REM sleep: a review of the evidence.

Rapid eye movements (REMs) and visual dreams are salient features of REM sleep. However, it is unclear whether the eyes scan dream images. Several lines of evidence oppose the scanning hypothesis: REMs persist in animals and humans without sight (pontine cats, foetus, neonates, born-blinds), some binocular REMs are not conjugated (no focus point), REMs occur in parallel (not in series) with the stimulation of the visual cortex by ponto-geniculo-occipital spikes, and visual dreams can be obtained in non REM sleep. Studies that retrospectively compared the direction of REMs to dream recall recor

The differential projections of the olfactory bulb and accessory olfactory bulb in mammals.

Three species were studied, the rabbit, opossum and rat. Lesions of the main olfactory bulb caused terminal degeneration, assayed by the Fink-Heimer method, to occur in the ipsilateral olfactory tubercle, prepyriform cortex (including its periamygdaloid part), ventrolateral entorhinal area, and in anterior and posterolateral divisions of the cortical amygdaloid nucleus. The various parts of the ipsilateral anterior olfactory nucleus and the rostroventral end of the anterior continuation of the hippocampus (hippocampal rudiment) also received this projection. Lesions of the accessory olfactory

Metabolic activation of efferent pathways from the rat area postrema.

We used the quantitative [14C]deoxyglucose method and autoradiography to evaluate metabolic activity in 47 individual cerebral structures or subregions that are part of neural pathways emanating from the brain stem circumventricular organ, area postrema. Electrical stimulation of the dorsocentral area postrema in halothane-ventilated rats produced hypotension and increased glucose metabolism by several structures within the ascending trajectories of efferent neural projections from the nucleus. Structures in the caudal medulla oblongata, including three subnuclei of the nucleus of the solitary…

Interactions between the nervous system and PDAC progression: Regulatory mechanisms and therapeutic implications.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is among the most aggressive human cancers. This review highlights recent advances in understanding how central and peripheral neural activity shapes PDAC, with a focus on signaling pathways, cellular mediators, and emerging research directions. Sympathetic fibers foster a pro-tumorigenic microenvironment through catecholamine release, while parasympathetic inputs can exert context-dependent inhibitory effects. Sensory pathways, Schwann cells, and neurotrophic factors further remodel the tumor niche, enabling invasion and immune escape. At the systemic l

Acute intracranial hypertension and auditory brain-stem responses. Part 1: Changes in the aduitory brain-stem and somatosensory evoked responses in intracranial hypertension in cats.

Changes in auditory brain-stem responses (BER's) and somatosensory evoked responses (SER's) were investigated to correlate mass volume, intracranial pressure, and neurological dysfunction in mass-induced intracranial hypertension in cats. As the intracranial pressure was raised by expansion of a supratentorial balloon, the late components of the SER's were suppressed first, followed by the early components of the SER's, then Wave V and Wave IV of the BER's, in that order. This suggests that the nonspecific reticular projections are most vulnerable to compression ischemia, and the specific soma

Non-malignant migration of B16 mouse melanoma cells in the neural crest and invasive growth in the eye cup of the chick embryo.

Melanocytes originate from the neural crest. In a previous study, we observed that human SK-Mel 28 human melanoma cells resumed neural crest cell migration after transplantation into the chick embryo neural tube. Here, we used transgenic mouse B16-F1 melanoma cells transfected with green fluorescent protein-vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein construct to extend these observations. After the injection of a cell suspension into the trunk neural tube of E2 chick embryos, the migration of melanoma cells was followed by live fluorescence microscopy. Within 12 h, the melanoma cells formed cluster

Cancer Neuroscience: From Local Neuro-Immune Microenvironments to Systemic Brain-Body Circuitry.

Classic oncological models have largely restricted cancer pathogenesis to autonomous genetic mutations within localized cells. Current research, however, reframes solid tumors as structurally integrated "pseudo-organs" that rely on host neural networks for survival. This review examines the reciprocal signaling networks connecting nervous, immune, and malignant cells within the tumor microenvironment. At the tissue level, we outline how tumors construct de novo neural architecture via axonogenesis, cellular plasticity, and the assembly of functional neuro-neoplastic synapses. Expanding beyond

Research progress on the mechanisms of endogenous neural stem cell differentiation in spinal cord injury repair.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition with limited self-repair capacity, resulting in long-term disabilities. Endogenous neural stem cells (eNSCs), which are present in the adult central nervous system (CNS), hold significant potential for repairing neural damage following SCI. These cells can proliferate, migrate to the injury site, and differentiate into various neural cell types, including neurons and glial cells. However, after SCI, eNSCs predominantly differentiate into astrocytes, with minimal neuronal differentiation, thereby hindering effective neural regeneration. This r

Neuropeptide/Receptor expression and plasticity in micturition pathways.

Several motor behaviors such as locomotion, respiration, sexual function, and micturition are generated by rhythmic and stereotyped motor patterns of activity. In most cases, these functions are primarily controlled by signals and neuronal commands that originate from the brainstem and spinal cord. Defined as the storage and periodic elimination of urine, micturition requires a complex neural control system that coordinates the activities of a variety of effector organs including the smooth muscle of the urinary bladder and the smooth and striated muscle of the urethral sphincters. Spatial spectral narrowing in the corticothalamic neural field model across consciousness states.

The neural correlates of consciousness have been characterized primarily through temporal EEG features, while the spatial dynamics of cortical activity across consciousness states remain poorly understood. Here, we analyze the spatial mode structure of the Robinson corticothalamic neural field model (CTM) across five consciousness states: healthy wakefulness, emergence from minimally conscious state (eMCS), minimally conscious state (MCS), deep sleep (N3), and unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS). We compute the noise-amplified spatial spectrum, which quantifies how the CTM filters spatiote

Brain-Wide Connectivity and Topographic Organization of Leptin Receptor Neurons in the Dorsomedial Hypothalamus.

OBJECTIVE: The dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) integrates metabolism and autonomic homeostasis, but whether subnuclear functional topography exists remains unclear. This study compared whole-brain input-output connectomes of leptin receptor (LepRb) neurons in dorsal DMH (DMD) versus DMH to test for connection-biased segregation. METHODS: Rabies monosynaptic retrograde tracing and Cre-dependent AAV anterograde tracing in LepRb-Cre mice mapped and quantified input-output projections of DMDLepRb and DMHLepRb neurons. RESULTS: Both DMDLepRb and DMHLepRb neurons received inputs from 58 upstream nu

Abnormal resting-state functional connectivity in anhedonia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Anhedonia is a treatment-resistant symptom of major depressive disorder and has prompted neuroimaging studies aimed at clarifying its neural basis. However, findings from seed-based resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) studies remain inconsistent. We conducted a whole-brain meta-analysis to synthesize rsFC alterations associated with anhedonia. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched up to June 14, 2026. Two researchers independently screened eligible studies and analyzed anhedonia-related rsFC. Subgroup analyses, jackknife sensitivity analyses, meta-regression, and publicatio

Projectomic profiles of calbindin D28K-expressing neurons in the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus of mouse.

Expression of calbindin D28K (CB) and parvalbumin (PV) distinguishes matrix and core type thalamic neurons, respectively, in primates. Whether the nice correspondence of intracellular calcium binding proteins and matrix/core neuron types translates to mouse remains unknown. Sixty reconstructed 3D mediodorsal thalamic nuclear neurons (MDCalb1 neurons), defined by calb1, the gene encoding CB in mouse MD, were mapped onto Allen Mouse Brain Common Coordinate Framework (CCFv3). Most MDCalb1 neurons (54/60) were isocortex-projecting ones, possessing collateral connections with caudate putamen (CP).

Paratenial thalamus engages in reciprocal and broadcast circuits with the prefrontal cortex.

The dorsal anterior midline thalamus (aMT) consists of two adjacent nuclei important for motivated and emotional behavior. Previous work focused on the paraventricular thalamus (PVT), with little known about the adjacent paratenial thalamus (PT). We examine neural circuits involving the PT using molecular profiling, anatomical tracing, electrophysiology, and optogenetics. We find that protein kinase C-delta (PKCd) selectively labels thalamocortical (TC) cells in the PT but is sparse in the PVT. We show that TC cells in the PT project to the infralimbic region (IL) of the medial prefrontal cort

Meta-analysis and meta-regression of diagnostic test accuracy of connectome-based predictive modeling in OCD.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have reported disruptions in functional connectivity within brain networks, known as connectomes. Researchers have tested connectomes to see whether they serve as biomarkers for various psychiatric conditions. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the diagnostic test accuracy of predictive models of connectomes derived from resting-state fMRI in diagnosing obsessive-compulsive disorder. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on previous studies assessing the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of connectome-based diagnostic models in

Optogenetics and chemogenetics: key tools for modulating neural circuits in rodent models of depression.

Optogenetics and chemogenetics are emerging neuromodulation techniques that have attracted significant attention in recent years. These techniques enable the precise control of specific neuronal types and neural circuits, allowing researchers to investigate the cellular mechanisms underlying depression. The advancement in these techniques has significantly contributed to the understanding of the neural circuits involved in depression; when combined with other emerging technologies, they provide novel therapeutic targets and diagnostic tools for the clinical treatment of depression. Hubs and interaction: the brain's meta-loop.

We must reconcile the needs of the internal world and the demands of the external world to make decisions relevant to homeostasis, well-being, and flexible behavior. Engagement with the internal (eg interoceptive) world is linked to medial brain systems, whereas the extrapersonal space (eg exteroceptive) is associated with lateral brain systems. Using Human Connectome Project data, we found three association tracts connecting the action-related frontal lobe with perception-related posterior lobes. A lateral dorsal tract and a medial dorsal tract interact independently with a ventral tract at f

From Correlation to Causation: Understanding Episodic Memory Networks.

Episodic memory, our ability to recall past experiences, is supported by structures in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) particularly the hippocampus, and its interactions with fronto-parietal brain regions. Understanding how these brain regions coordinate to encode, consolidate, and retrieve episodic memories remains a fundamental question in cognitive neuroscience. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) methods, especially transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), have advanced episodic memory research beyond traditional lesion studies and neuroimaging by enabling causal investigations through ta
