Involvement of the autonomic nervous system in Parkinson's disease (PD) demonstrates the multiple system character of this disease exceeding the extrapyramidal system. Forty to sixty percent of patients with PD suffer from symptoms of autonomic failure impairing their quality of life. Autonomic failure in PD is caused by damage to the postganglionic part of the autonomic nervous system. Scintigraphy with radiolabeled metaiodobenzylguanidin (MIBG) provides evidence of autonomic involvement at an early stage of the disease and enables an early differential diagnosis of PD versus other neurodegen

This research was conducted to determine which neurological test or combination of tests can provide sufficient functional information to compliment biochemical or morphological endpoints in mechanistic studies of toxic axonopathies. Using several neurological indices, we evaluated the effects of two prototypical neurotoxicants that cause distal axonopathy: acrylamide monomer (ACR) and 2,5-hexanedione (HD). For each toxicant, rats were exposed to two daily dosing rates (ACR, 50 mg/kg per day i.p. or 21 mg/kg per day, p.o.; HD, 175 or 400 mg/kg per day, p.o.) and neurological endpoints were det

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other motor neuron disorders : official publication of the World Federation of Neurology, Research Group on Motor Neuron Diseases2000eng
The El Escorial criteria for diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have been in use for almost a decade. A revised set of criteria, meant to supersede the original set, was developed at a 1998 World Federation of Neurology (WFN) ALS meeting at Airlie House in Warrenton, Virginia, USA. This revised document, nicknamed El Escorial Revisited, has been published on the WFN-ALS website. El Escorial has proven useful in standardizing diagnostic criteria for entry into research trials and it is expected that El Escorial Revisited will help to liberalize such entry requirements. However, ge

BACKGROUND: The term "hippus" describes pupillary oscillations of variable amplitude and frequency and may be physiological or part of a pathological entity. Thus, pupillary hippus is often the target of extensive clinical investigation.
CASE REPORT: A 9-year-old boy was seen in our emergency room in March 1998. Examination showed distinct pupillary oscillations in the absence of any other pathological findings. We presented the patient to a pediatric neurologist. Apart from a history of enuresis and of motor tics in the neck region, the present neurological examination was normal.
CONCLUSIO

Two patients with cocaine-induced peripheral vascular occlusive disease are presented. A 37-year-old man was admitted to the hospital for evaluation of severe pain and numbness of his feet. He had used cocaine prior to admission. Arteriography showed bilateral occlusions of superficial femoral, popliteal, and trifucation arteries. Despite repeated infusions of urokinase, he developed progressive bilateral gangrene of both legs necessitating bilateral below-knee amputations. The second patient developed similar symptoms after smoking cocaine. Arteriography showed vasospasm bilaterally from the

Progressive ataxia, delayed growth, dementia and tremors were noted in a female African lion (Panthera leo) cub at the Tel-Aviv Ramat-Gan Zoological Center (Israel). The lioness was 3-mo-old when clinical signs were first noticed. Repeated neurological evaluations and blood tests were conducted in an attempt to establish a diagnosis. A congenital abnormality was suspected and the lioness died 6 molater. Post mortem examination revealed an Arnold-Chiari malformation. The abnormality was classified as a Chiari type 2 malformation, based on the herniation of the cerebellar vermis and paravermis a

Latency differences (>0.5 ms) of median and ulnar sensory action potentials (mSAP and uSAP) at the wrist evoked by ring finger stimulation are considered a sensitive and specific test for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In this study, we aimed to assess the practical usefulness of the ring finger test (RFT) in routine electromyography (EMG) examinations. We investigated 2 series of patients: in the first prospective series we considered 300 hands affected by only mild CTS; in the second series we examined retrospectively the EMG charts of 961 hands affected only by CTS but not selec

Instability and falling are common concerns for older adults and their clinical providers as well as contributors to the epidemic consequences of hip fracture and other traumatic injuries from falls. Thoughtful attention to the historic description of the symptoms, consideration of the underlying medical conditions, and a critical review of the medication list should be combined with a careful physical examination and selected tests of physical function. A recent onset of symptoms may warrant diagnostic testing to rule out acute reversible pathology. In those with chronic instability, testing
