Peripheral nerve conduction abnormalities in children exposed to alcohol in utero.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a longitudinal study of nerve conduction velocity to determine the effect of prenatal alcohol exposure on the peripheral nervous system. Study design We studied 17 children exposed to >2 oz of absolute alcohol/day prenatally and 13 unexposed children, identified prospectively from a cohort of pregnant women screened during prenatal care. Nerve conduction assessment was done on the median, ulnar, peroneal and tibial nerves during the newborn period and between 12 and 14 months of age. RESULTS: At both assessments the alcohol-exposed subjects had significantly slower uln

Localization of the motor nerve branches and motor points of the triceps surae muscles in korean cadavers.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the precise locations of the muscular branches (MBs) and motor points (MPs) of triceps surae muscles in relation to the bony landmarks. DESIGN: Thirty-six limbs from 22 adult cadavers were anatomically dissected. The location and the number of MPs and MBs from the tibial nerve to the triceps surae muscles were defined relative to four bony landmarks. Locations of the MBs and the MPs were expressed as a percentage of the lower leg length and the percentage of the lower leg width. RESULTS: One MB was identified from the posterior tibial nerve to the soleus muscle, one or

Neural organization of the ventilatory activity in the frog, Rana catesbeiana. I.

In order to elucidate the neural basis for lung ventilation in the frog, we have investigated the efferent neural activity to oropharyngeal muscles in the decerebrate, paralyzed, unanesthetized bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana. Efferent motor output was recorded from the mandibular branch of the trigeminal (Vmd), the laryngeal branch of the vagus (Xl), and the main and sternohyoid branches of the hypoglossal nerve (Hm and Hsh, respectively). Two types of rhythmic bursting outputs were observed: (1) a high-frequency, low-amplitude, reciprocal oscillation between Vmd, a buccal levator nerve, and Hsh,

Reflex carotid body chemoreceptor control of phrenic sympathetic neurons.

The reflex reaction of phrenic sympathetic neurons to stimulation of carotid body chemoreceptors was tested in chloralose-anesthetized and paralyzed cats with both vago-aortic nerves cut. During systemic hypoxia (animals ventilated with 10% O2 in N2) the sympathetic phrenic nerve activity increased from 100% in the control to 269%. This increase was markedly attenuated after cutting both sinus nerves. Reflex excitatory response in phrenic sympathetic neurons with the latency of 150 msec was evoked by electrical stimulation of the right carotid sinus nerve (3 pulses of 0.2 msec, 333 Hz). The ce

Geniculotectal neurons of the lateral part of the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus in the hereditary microphthalmic rat: a retrograde WGA-HRP study.

The distribution and morphological characteristics of the geniculotectal neurons from the lateral part of the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus in the hereditary microphthalmic rat were examined by the WGA-HRP method. Unilateral injection of the tracer into the microphthalmic superior colliculus showed that WGA-HRP-positive neurons were present in the ipsilateral lateral part of the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus. However, the number of labeled geniculotectal neurons of the microphthalmia was about 50% that of the normal rats. Furthermore, the size of labeled geniculotectal neurons of the

An explanation of eye movements seen in internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Recent findings in experiments on monkeys show that a horizontal saccade is made by a pulse-step of neural activity, part of which rises to medial rectus (MR) motoneurons on the fibers of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). If inhibitory as well as excitatory fibers run in the MLF, then the data show that each MLF must carry both the excitatory and inhibitory activity required for contralateral, horizontal saccades. Therefore, interruption of these fibers removes not only excitation from the ipsilateral MR but inhibition from the contralateral MR. Such a lesion also disturbs the correct

Abdominal surgery induced gastric ileus and activation of M1-like macrophages in the gastric myenteric plexus: prevention by central vagal activation in rats.

Inflammation plays a role in abdominal surgery (AS)-induced intestinal ileus that is alleviated by electrical vagal stimulation. Intracisternal injection of RX-77368, the stable thyrotropin-releasing hormone agonist, activates dorsal motor nucleus neurons and gastric vagal efferent discharges. We investigated the gastric inflammation induced by AS and the modulation by intracisternal RX-77368 in rats. RX-77368 (50 ng/rat) or saline was injected followed, 1 h later, by laparotomy and small intestinal/cecal manipulation. The sham group had anesthesia alone. After 6 h, gastric emptying (GE) and t

An electrophysiological study into the effect of neurotrophin-3 on functional recovery after lingual nerve repair.

OBJECTIVE: Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) is known to ameliorate central changes that result from peripheral nerve injury and may promote regeneration of myelinated axons. We have assessed its role in the functional recovery of sensory afferents and autonomic efferents after repair of the chorda tympani and lingual nerves in the cat. DESIGN: Six months after entubulation repair, with or without the incorporation of NT-3 at the repair site, the recovery of secretomotor and vasomotor efferents was determined by recording salivary flow from the submandibular gland and temperature changes on the tongue su

[Selective stimulations and lesions of the rat brain nuclei as the models for research of the human sleep pathology mechanisms].

Many complex behavioral phenomena such as sleep can not be explained without multidisciplinary experimental approach, and complementay approaches in the animal models "in vivo" and human studies. Electrophysiological, pharmacological, anatomical and immunohistochemical techniques, and particularly stereotaxically guided local nanovolume microinjection technique, enable us to selectively stimulate and lesion the brain nuclei or their specific neuronal subpopulation, and to reslove the mechanisms of certain brain structure regulatory role, and its afferent-efferent connectivity within the brain.

Rspo3-mediated metabolic liver zonation regulates systemic glucose metabolism and body mass in mice.

The unique architecture of the liver consists of hepatic lobules, dividing the hepatic features of metabolism into 2 distinct zones, namely the pericentral and periportal zones, the spatial characteristics of which are broadly defined as metabolic zonation. R-spondin3 (Rspo3), a bioactive protein promoting the Wnt signaling pathway, regulates metabolic features especially around hepatic central veins. However, the functional impact of hepatic metabolic zonation, regulated by the Rspo3/Wnt signaling pathway, on whole-body metabolism homeostasis remains poorly understood. In this study, we analy

Genetic Targeting and Conductance-Based Modeling Reveal Novel Diversity within Mouse Type II Spiral Ganglion Neurons.

Spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) transmit auditory signals from the cochlea to the brain and are divided into two main types: type I and type II, distinguished by their anatomy and connectivity. However, the function of type II SGNs remains poorly understood due to their scarcity and lack of clear physiological markers. In this study, we use two Cre-dependent fluorescent reporter mouse lines of both sexes to enhance the identification and targeting of type II SGNs for whole-cell patch-clamp recordings. We reveal a set of distinguishing biophysical features, notably, the presence of an inactivati

A role for dopamine in control of the hypoxic ventilatory response via D2 receptors in the zebrafish gill.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in oxygen sensing and control of reflex hyperventilation. In aquatic vertebrates, oxygen sensing occurs in the gills via chemoreceptive neuroepithelial cells (NECs), but a mechanism for dopamine in autonomic control of ventilation has not been defined. We used immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy to map the distribution of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), an enzyme necessary for dopamine synthesis, in the gills of zebrafish. TH was found in nerve fibers of the gill filaments and respiratory lamellae. We further identified dopamine active transporter (d

Intraoperative Sneezing Secondary to Indirect Olfactory Nerve Stimulation.

Sneezing is a poorly understood, protective reflex response. It's characterized by the following sequence: eye closure, inspiration, glottic closure, forced expiration with sudden glottic opening, and release of an elevated intrathoracic pressure creating a flow of explosive air through the nose.1 Studies have indicated an anatomic sneezing area of the brainstem corresponding to the central recipient zone of the nasal sensory neurons in the lateral medulla.2 The traditional pathophysiology of the sneeze is thought to begin by stimulation of the distal branches of the trigeminal nerve within th

Topography of dyskinesias and torticollis evoked by inhibition of substantia nigra pars reticulata.

GABAergic neurons of the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr) and globus pallidus pars interna (GPi) constitute the output pathways of the basal ganglia. In monkeys, choreiform limb dyskinesias have been described after inhibition of the GPi, but not the SNpr. Given the anatomical and functional similarities between these structures, we hypothesized that choreiform dyskinesias could be evoked by inhibition of an appropriate region within the SNpr. The GABAA receptor agonist, muscimol, was infused into various sites within the SNpr and the adjacent STN of freely moving macaques. The effect o

Mechanisms of motor dysfunction after transient MCA occlusion: persistent transmission failure in cortical synapses is a major determinant.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Failure of prompt motor recovery after spontaneous recirculation or thrombolytic therapy may be due to an unsatisfactory restoration of synaptic activity within cortex and/or blockade of electrical impulses at the severely ischemic subcortical region. METHODS: Afferent, efferent, and synaptic activities were focally examined within the rat sensorimotor cortex by recording the somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP) and motor area response evoked by stimulation of premotor afferents (PmEP) intracortically and the motor-evoked potential (MEP) generated by stimulation of the

Pathophysiology of the glutamatergic synapses in the cochlea.

The synapses between the inner hair cells (IHCs) and the radial auditory dendrites are thought to be glutamatergic. Besides its fast excitatory properties, glutamate is known to be neurotoxic when released in excess or incompletely recycled. In the cochlea, this may occur in two pathological conditions: ischemia and noise trauma. We have further investigated the acute excitotoxicity (i.e. the swelling of type I afferent dendrites) by electron microscopy processing on guinea pig cochleas after an ischemic exposure lasting 5 to 40 min. The radial auditory dendrites reacted to ischemia in a time-

Human brain mapping under increasing cognitive complexity using regional cerebral blood flow measurements and positron emission tomography.

Measurement of the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) is an important parameter in the evaluation of cerebral function. With positron emission tomography (PET) rCBF has predominantly been quantified using the short-lived radiotracer oxygen-15 labelled water (H 2 15 O) and an adaptation of the Kety one-tissue compartment autoradiographic model. The values attained in putative grey matter, however, are systematically underestimated because of the limited scanner resolution. For this reason we applied a dynamic kinetic two-tissue compartment model including a fast and a slow flow component each

Abnormalities of cardiac sympathetic innervation in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy : quantitative assessment of presynaptic norepinephrine reuptake and postsynaptic beta-adrenergic receptor density with positron emission tomography.

BACKGROUND: The frequent provocation of ventricular tachycardia by stress or catecholamines and the efficacy of antiarrhythmic drugs with antiadrenergic properties suggest an involvement of the cardiac adrenergic system in arrhythmogenesis in patients with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). Previous studies demonstrated abnormalities of the presynaptic uptake-1 assessed by (123)I-MIBG-single-photon emission computed tomography. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study investigated neuronal reuptake of norepinephrine (uptake-1) and beta-adrenergic receptor density in 8 patients wit

Docetaxel-induced nail changes--a neurogenic mechanism: a case report.

Docetaxel is a new taxoid widely used in chemotherapy for advanced breast cancer and other solid malignancies. Painful nail changes with onycholysis occur in about 40% of docetaxel-treated patients as a prominent adverse effect. We report a patient with a complete peripheral palsy of the right arm due to advanced breast cancer with diffuse tumor infiltration of the brachial plexus. Treatment with docetaxel led to onycholysis at all extremities except the paretic hand. Sensory and motoric innervation measured by nerve conduction studies showed a complete loss of large nerve fiber function of th

Vestibular sensory epithelia in patients with acoustic neurinoma.

The human vestibular sensory epithelia of the macula utriculi were examined ultrastructurally in 13 cases with acoustic neurinoma. The sensory epithelia were fairly well preserved, with several morphological changes such as lipofuscin granules, intraepithelial cysts, pyknosis, vacuoles, laminated structures, banded structures and degeneration of subepithelial myelinated nerves evident. The pathological significance of these findings was discussed. There were thickened irregular membrane formations in spaces between the nerve calyces and type I hair cells which might be related to acoustic neur
