Neurophysiological affective reactivity classification and its stability in individuals with cannabis use disorder.

The increasing prevalence of Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) necessitates measures that reliably predict outcomes. Based in the incentive sensitization model of addiction, the late positive potential (LPP) has been used to predict choice of drug versus affective cues and classify individuals into clinically-relevant neuroaffective reactivity profiles derived from viewing affective and drug-related pictures in individuals who use substances. However, this approach has not been conducted on a sample of individuals who use cannabis nor has its retest reliability been assessed. This study replicated a

Neurophysiological Mechanisms of Neuropathic Pain and Their Clinical Implications: A Primer for the Peripheral Nerve Surgeon.

Chronic neuropathic pain is a serious and significant clinical challenge affecting more than 10% of the global population. Despite its prevalence, the precise mechanisms and reasons for the significant burden of neuropathic pain remain incompletely understood, in part due to the complexity of pain signaling circuits and their integration across the nervous system. Preclinical studies have identified 3 key intraneuronal processes that contribute to the persistent nociceptive barrage underlying neuropathic pain: ectopic discharges, primary afferent depolarization with dorsal root reflexes (PAD/D

Neurophysiological mechanisms of fluid intelligence: Insights from ERP and aperiodic activity in adolescents.

To investigate the neurophysiological mechanisms of fluid intelligence (Gf), this study systematically examined neural activity differences between adolescents with high and low Gf using three core executive function (EF) tasks: inhibitory control (Flanker), working memory (4-back), and cognitive flexibility (task-switching), with a focus on event-related potentials (ERPs) and aperiodic activity. Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded during both resting and task states, and the FOOOF algorithm was used to perform parametric spectral decomposition. The results revealed that the low-Gf group

Neurophysiological synchrony as an emergent performance marker of multi-human-robot team effectiveness.

Most human-robot interaction research focuses on dyadic interactions, yet real-world applications require multi-human-robot teams (mHRTs). While surveys, communication metrics, and performance capture team processes, neurophysiological synchrony between human dyads offers a promising marker of team dynamics. This study investigated how robot reliability shapes trust, coordination, and neurophysiological synchrony in mHRTs, and whether neurophysiological measures predict mission outcomes beyond traditional assessments. Twenty-three teams (two humans, one robot) completed search-and-rescue missi

From early to contemporary normative modeling: Mapping individual differences in neurophysiological signals.

Normative modeling has become a cornerstone of computational neuroscience, offering a powerful framework for detecting individual deviations from typical brain function. This review traces its trajectory in electrophysiology of the brain, from early studies in the 1970s, through a period of relative neglect, to its recent revival driven by machine learning advances and the availability of large-scale datasets. We provide a structured overview of this evolution, showing the shift from small, site-specific age-based models to increasingly harmonized approaches that integrate diverse biological a

Assessment of perceived environmental quality in urban regeneration: integrating neurophysiological and psychological perspectives.

As urban development shifts toward quality-oriented regeneration, evaluating human-environment interactions is critical for sustainable urban management. This study develops a comprehensive physical-physiological-psychological framework to assess micro-urban regeneration in high-density residential contexts. Through the integration with eye-tracking and questionnaire-based evaluations, a highly significant hierarchy of visual salience was identified: Facilities > Vegetation > Buildings > Roads. Although electroencephalography (EEG)-derived measures did not exhibit statistically significant dif

Burst suppression in disorders of consciousness: Automated screening, severity quantification, and neurophysiological profiling.

BACKGROUND: Burst suppression (BS) is a clinically important EEG pattern in disorders of consciousness (DoC), but routine identification still relies on visual review, and automated methods developed in anesthesia or otherwise controlled settings may generalize poorly to heterogeneous DoC EEG. OBJECTIVE: To develop an adaptive framework for automated BS detection and algorithm-aligned BS-burden quantification, and to characterize BS-associated neurophysiological features in DoC. METHODS: We developed an unsupervised two-stage pipeline that screens EEG segments for BS using differential-signa

Combined impacts of warming and methomyl on neurophysiological and behavioral responses in Amazonian frog tadpoles.

Amphibian populations are declining globally due to anthropogenic stressors such as climate change and environmental contamination. In Amazonia, where aquatic species already endure conditions near their thermal thresholds, the combined effects of rising temperatures and pesticide exposure pose a threat to their survival and physiological stability. Here, we evaluated the isolated and interactive impacts of elevated temperature and sublethal concentrations of the carbamate pesticide methomyl on behavior, neurophysiology, and endocrine responses in tadpoles of two Amazonian frogs, Osteocephalus…

Neurophysiological Profiles in a Family with Multiple SHANK3-Related Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Cases.

We present a family case study of Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS), a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by haploinsufficiency of the SHANK3 gene, in which two of three siblings were clinically diagnosed with PMS. Sanger sequencing identified a novel heterozygous deletion in exon 20 of SHANK3 (c.3679del, p.Ala1227Profs*168), predicted to introduce a premature stop codon and truncate the protein; this variant was absent in the unaffected sibling. Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) were recorded at 16, 27, and 40 Hz. The 40 Hz ASSR was markedly reduced in both affected siblings, reaching stat

Neurophysiological insights into iNPH: ABR and CAEP responses to lumbar puncture and shunt surgery.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a neurological syndrome resulting from increased cerebrospinal fluid volume without significant increase in intracranial pressure. The diagnosis is difficult and investigating other tools that can assist in this process is essential. Auditory Evoked Potentials (AEPs) can be used to assess the auditory pathway integrity and monitor cognitive auditory functions. The objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of the AEPs as a potential monitoring tool for detecting clinical improvements associated with cerebrospinal

ION-Sim: A Novel Open-Source Simulation Framework for Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring.

The educational pathway for expertise in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is complex and lengthy, requiring a solid foundation in neuroscience, neurophysiology, and neuroanatomy. It also demands direct familiarity with a broad range of neurosurgical scenarios, including supratentorial, infratentorial, and spinal procedures, gained through exposure to at least ten distinct surgical approaches. Intraoperative neurophysiology must be tailored to each patient's preoperative assessments. It relies on a variety of methods to collect, analyze, and report neurophysiological signals …

Neurocognitive and neurophysiological consequences of sleep-disordered breathing in bronchiectasis: the role of respiratory rehabilitation.

Bronchiectasis (BE) is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by a vicious cycle of irreversible bronchial dilatation and persistent respiratory infections which results in progressive functional impairment and reduced quality of life. Increasing attention has been directed toward comorbidities that may aggravate disease burden, including sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which remains underrecognized in this population. Emerging evidence suggests that SDB, particularly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is highly prevalent in BE and may contribute to adverse outcomes through mechanisms such

Temporally Dissociated Neurophysiologic Findings in Pediatric Bickerstaff Brainstem Encephalitis: A Case Report.

Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE) is rare in children, and neurophysiologic abnormalities may be detected and resolve at different times. A 12-year-old boy developed ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, somnolence, hyporeflexia, and weakness after a respiratory illness. On illness day 3, cerebrospinal fluid protein and magnetic resonance imaging were normal. On day 4, distal limb studies and needle electromyography were unrevealing, but tibial F-wave persistence was reduced, bilateral R1 and R2 blink responses were absent despite preserved facial compound muscle action potentials, and electroenceph

Leprosy neuropathy and demyelinating impairment: How should we interpret this neurophysiological pattern?

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Leprosy neuropathy (LN) may cause demyelination that worsens during the leprosy reactions (LR). Type-1 LR (T1LR) occurs in patients with cell-mediated immune response against M. leprae, and Type-2 LR (T2LR) occurs in multibacillary cases. The patterns of nerve impairment need to be clarified, as both demyelination and axonal degeneration are commonly observed. This study aimed to describe how to interpret the demyelinating impairment in LN. METHODS: Retrospective observational analysis of leprosy patients in a National Reference Center in Brazil between 2014-2023. RESULTS:

Clinical and neurophysiological features of neuropathic pain in hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis associated polyneuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN) is often associated with neuropathic pain (NP), involving developing mechanisms across different nerve fibres. This study aimed to explore the relationship between NP intensity and clinical/neurophysiological measures in symptomatic ATTR V30M (p.V50M)-PN patients. METHODS: We included 106 symptomatic patients (46 males; mean age 47.5 ± 13.2 years). NP severity was classified using three pain-related items from the Norfolk QOL-DN, generating three groups: no pain, mild pain, and moderate-to-severe pain. Clinical an

Neurophysiological signatures of default mode network dysfunction and cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease.

Neural hyperexcitability and network dysfunction are neurophysiological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in animal studies, but their presence and clinical relevance in humans remain poorly understood. We introduce a perturbation-based approach combining transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography (TMS-EEG), alongside resting-state EEG (rsEEG), to investigate neurophysiological basis of default mode network (DMN) dysfunction in early AD. While rsEEG revealed global neural slowing and disrupted synchrony, these measures reflected widespread changes in brain neurophysiology…
