Impact of a community-based educational intervention on the knowledge of palliative care: a pretest-posttest study.

INTRODUCTION: In Spain, there are between 300,000 and 370,000 people with palliative care needs. The current challenge is to combat inequities in access to palliative care resources in rural areas through training, greater provision of material and human resources, and the involvement of health system managers. Emphasizing the role of the community nurse as the main exponent of care together with the role of community interventions. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of a community-based educational intervention on caregiving skills for informal caregivers in rural areas. METHODS: A q

'Asram is really killing us here': attribution for pregnancy losses and newborn mortality in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

While overall neonatal mortality rates are improving in Ghana, the Ashanti Region has the highest mortality rate in the country. The clinical causes of newborn deaths are well known, yet local beliefs about illness aetiology, cause of death and care-seeking are less well understood. This exploratory qualitative study sought to understand how community members perceive and respond to neonatal illness. Researchers worked with public health nurses, community health nurses and opinion leaders in the Ashanti Region of Ghana to identify women who had lost a baby, either during pregnancy or after del…

Prevalence of chronic wounds in Quebec home care: an exploratory study.

Because the prevalence of chronic wounds in Quebec is unknown, researchers conducted a chronic wound prevalence feasibility study in severely ill, elderly, or bedridden home care patients. Questionnaires seeking information about the number of wounds, patient comorbidities, and characteristics of the most severe wound (etiology, location, duration, progress, and treatments) were mailed to the head nurse and home care nurses of 149 local community health centers. Information regarding nurse and general health center needs related to chronic wound prevention and care also was solicited from nurs

Management of agricultural injuries and illness.

Until recently, rural health care nursing issues had not been widely addressed. Appropriate concerns for an ill or injured worker in an urban setting are compounded in the rural setting with its isolation and lack of resources. Farming is very diversified, and different parts of the country face different types of problems. Nurses in the rural community have a responsibility to learn as much as possible about the agricultural hazards common to their area. Health care professionals must be able to make rapid, accurate assessments of the injured or ill farmer, taking into account the nature of t

Nurses speak out for home care: winning the last great civil rights battle.

In closing, it is clear that home care nurses are a very special breed. They are missionaries, committed to the goal of helping vulnerable Americans manage their health care needs and to preserving the freedoms and the independence that everyone cherishes. As is clear from the vignettes above, their first and last thoughts each day are for the well-being of their patients. They are so busy providing sophisticated care for a raft of complex medical problems common to their patients and filling out Medicare forms that they sometimes forget to take care of themselves. There is no doubt that they

Finding the Right Time to Discuss Advance Care Planning with Myeloma Patients and Their Carers: An Opportunity for Nursing.

PURPOSE: People with multiple myeloma are living longer with an incurable disease due to improved treatments. Despite advance care planning (ACP) and palliative care's focus on improving symptom management and quality of life, there remains a perception among patients and clinicians that palliative care is only for end-of-life care, leading to uncertainty around when to introduce these conversations. This study examines the lived experiences of myeloma patients and their carers, exploring their views as to when and how they would like to commence meaningful conversations around palliative and

Children who require long-term ventilation: staff education and training.

Children who live with conditions that were previously considered incompatible with long-term survival are often highly dependent on medical technology, interventions and equipment. This includes an increasing number of children who require long-term assisted ventilation. It is generally accepted that the social, psychological, emotional and developmental needs of children are best met at home, rather than in a hospital environment, and this applies equally to children who have long-term health problems. However, one of the many factors that can impede the discharge from hospital of children r

Secret Voices are Breaking the Silence: A Meta-Ethnography of Perceptions of Sexual and Reproductive Health Among Resettled Refugee Youth.

Nurses are in the front line in caring for refugee youth in relation to their sexual and reproductive health. Culturally competent nursing care requires an understanding of different health values, beliefs, and practices and to be aware of the perceptions refugee youth have regarding sexual health. Therefor the aim of this meta-ethnography was to synthesize knowledge of refugee youth, and their perceptions related to sexual and reproductive health, before and after resettlement to a new country. Nine qualitative studies were included, describing the experiences of 297 refugee youth, originatin

Views of teenage parents on their support housing needs.

This paper describes how a group of health and social care professionals worked together, with support from a Research Development Support Unit (RDSU), to undertake a research project to give teenage parents a voice in identifying their support housing needs. The results informed local planning, and the support housing strategy. Data were collected from 25 young parents (20 mothers and five fathers) through semi-structured interviews and a small focus group. Routes into homelessness for the sample group are described, and their housing and support needs are identified. Key issues include the n

Hospital Performance, Nursing Resources, and Health Inequities During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Few researchers have examined the organizational features of high-performing and low-performing hospitals for COVID-19 mortality during the pandemic, and how differences in hospital performance contributed to mortality disparities among socially vulnerable patients hospitalized with COVID-19. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were (a) to identify high- and low-performing hospitals on COVID-19 inpatient mortality and describe their distinguishing organizational characteristics, including nursing resources, and (b) to assess whether patients admitted to high-performing hospitals differed b

Faculty Development Needs in Southeastern Conference Nursing Schools.

BACKGROUND: This study examined nurse faculty members' teaching, scholarship, and professional development interests across Southeastern Conference (SEC) nursing schools, and evaluated differences in these needs associated with years in academia, tenure status, faculty rank, and Accountable Health Communities (AHC) versus non-AHC settings. METHOD: Rosenthal and Stanberry's framework for faculty development provided the theoretical foundation for this cross-sectional study to explore topics of interests of faculty at 12 SEC nursing schools. RESULTS: A total of 470 faculty responded to the onl

The residential continuum from home to nursing home: size, characteristics and unmet needs of older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults with care needs live in a variety of settings-from traditional community housing to nursing homes. This analysis provides new estimates of the size and characteristics of the older population across settings and examines unmet needs for assistance. METHOD: Data are from the 2011 National Health and Aging Trends Study (N = 8,077). Multinomial logistic regressions focus on people in settings other than nursing homes who are at risk for unmet needs, defined as receiving help or having difficulty with household, self-care, or mobility activities (N = 4,023). RESULTS: Of

Use of upper-limb compression garments in the management of lipoedema.

Compression hosiery is commonly used for the management of lymphoedema as well as lipoedema, but it is more commonly indicated for the lower limbs than for the upper limbs. The effects of compression hosiery on upper-limb lipoedema are poorly understood and researched. It is known that compression hosiery works in conjunction with activity or movement when standing or walking, which produces anti-inflammatory and oxygenating effects in the tissues. This effect is naturally difficult to realise in the upper limbs. Lymphoedema practitioners who treat those with lipoedema should bear in mind that

Audit of skin changes present in referrals to a specialist lymphoedema service.

An audit of 100 new patients attending a specialist lymphoedema clinic revealed 52% presented with chronic oedema. More than half (58%) of the chronic oedema group presented with skin changes whereas 14% of those with lipoedema, 4% with lymphoedema of the arm, and 8% with lymphoedema of the leg developed skin changes. None of the primary lymphoedema group developed skin changes. Chronic venous disease (CVD) was significantly more prevalent in the chronic oedema group. More patients with bilateral chronic oedema suffered from cellulitis (41%) compared to unilateral (27%). Skin changes, CVD and

Clinical decision making and ethics in communications between donor families and recipients: how much should they know?

Advances in organ recovery and transplantation have provided us with the skills and opportunity to save, extend, and improve the quality of life for many. But with these opportunities have come challenges to redefine our practice and relationships with donor and recipient families. Although most donor families and transplant recipients receive some information about each other, many still do not. In the past, communication between donor families and recipients has been anonymous and highly controlled, with much inconsistency among and within the transplant community, leaving many involved in t
