Horizontal transmission of Candida parapsilosis candidemia in a neonatal intensive care unit.

This report describes the nosocomial acquisition of Candida parapsilosis candidemia by one of the six premature newborns housed in the same room of a neonatal intensive care unit at the Ospedale Santa Chiara, Pisa, Italy. The infant had progeria, a disorder characterized by retarded physical development and progressive senile degeneration. The infant, who was not found to harbor C. parapsilosis at the time of his admission to the intensive care unit, had exhibited symptomatic conjunctivitis before the onset of a severe bloodstream infection. In order to evaluate the source of infection and the

The effect of training on noise reduction in neonatal intensive care units.

PURPOSE: Noise, an environmental stimulus, is especially important in the neurobehavioral development of newborns and brain development of infants at high risk. Conditions in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) may cause certain sensory stimuli that are not appropriate for the development of newborns, especially preterm infants. This study was conducted in order to determine noise levels in the NICU and to evaluate the effect of training provided for noise control. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study was conducted as a pretest-posttest quasiexperimental design between September and November

Effect of a portable therapeutic baby nest designed for neonates on physiological parameters, comfort and pain levels during venous blood sampling: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In Turkey, paediatric emergency departments often lack the specialised environments required for invasive procedures on neonates. Given their developmental vulnerability, it is crucial to use interventions that reduce discomfort and support physiological stability. This study introduces the portable therapeutic baby nest (PTBN), designed to provide developmentally supportive care aligned with the principles of the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program. METHODS: This two-phase study included 80 term neonates (40 per group). First, the PTBN was developed f

Laser Acupuncture at Large Intestine 4 Compared with Oral Glucose Administration for Pain Prevention in Healthy Term Neonates Undergoing Routine Heel Lance: Study Protocol for an Observer-Blinded, Randomised Controlled Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nonpharmacological strategies have actually become more important in neonatal pain management during routinely applied minor painful procedures. However, commonly used nonpharmacological strategies are inferior to orally administered sweet solutions. Therefore, we will compare laser acupuncture, as a recent nonpharmacological method, with the standard care of oral glucose solution for pain prevention. METHODS: Ninety-five healthy term neonates will be allocated into one of two groups. Before routine heel lance for metabolic screening, one group will receive laser acupuncture at ac
