Global Cushing's disease epidemiology: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

PURPOSE: Cushing's disease (CD), 70% of endogenous hypercortisolism cases, is a rare disease caused by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenomas. To date, no systematic reviews and meta-analyses on its global epidemiology have been published. We provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of CD global epidemiology, also evaluating the quality of study reporting for the identified studies. METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched for studies on CD epidemiology from inception until November 30th, 2020, including original observational studies in English about

Evaluating the Evidence in Clinical Studies of Vitamin D in COVID-19.

Laboratory evidence provides a biological rationale for the benefits of vitamin D in COVID-19, and vitamin D supplementation is associated with reduced risk of respiratory infections. Most of the clinical studies of vitamin D in COVID-19 have been observational, and the most serious problem with observational study design is that of confounding. Observational studies typically assess the relationship of 25(OH)D values with COVID-19 outcomes. Many conditions associated with low vitamin D status are also associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) overcome the pr

The potential link between obstructive sleep apnea and postoperative neurocognitive disorders: current knowledge and possible mechanisms.

PURPOSE: This narrative review examines the current evidence on whether obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with postoperative delirium (POD) and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). The mechanisms that could predispose OSA patients to these disorders are also explored. SOURCE: Relevant literature was identified by searching for pertinent terms in Medline®, Pubmed, ScopusTM, and Google scholar databases. Case reports, abstracts, review articles, original research articles, and meta-analyses were reviewed. The bibliographies of retrieved sources were also searched to identify re

Approaches to nutrition intervention in plaque psoriasis, a multi-system inflammatory disease-The Diet and Psoriasis Project (DIEPP).

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 2% of the UK population. Its pathogenesis is suggested to be an outcome of genetic and environmental interplay. People with psoriasis have an increased likelihood of developing other conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Systemic inflammation is hypothesised to be the common link between psoriasis and cardio-metabolic diseases. Emerging evidence shows diet as a potential therapeutic adjunct in the management of psoriasis. The Diet and Psoriasis Project (DIEPP) aims to investigate whether

Antibiotics use and risk of colorectal neoplasia: An updated meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Accumulating evidence indicate that antibiotic use could induce microbiome dysbiosis, which was a critical driver to the onset and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). But the relationship between antibiotics use and CRC was still disputed. Hence, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to appraise and synthesize the present available evidence to clarify the association. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched for relevant observational studies from inception to June 5, 2020. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confide

Effects of clozapine treatment on the improvement of substance use disorders other than nicotine in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotic medications are the mainstay of treatment for schizophrenia and are associated with a reduction in psychiatric hospitalization and overall mortality. Some evidence suggest that antipsychotic medications might have a varying effect on the improvement of comorbid substance use disorders (SUDs), with clozapine showing more favorable outcomes. AIM: We systematically reviewed all available evidence on effects of clozapine on the improvement of SUDs other than nicotine. METHODS: Electronic searches of MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINHAL were conducted up to March 1, 202

Outcomes of a Undiluted, One-Bag Desensitization Protocol for Chemotherapeutic Agents.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitive reactions (HSRs) often require that the provoking medication be discontinued but chemotherapeutic drugs are often essential for the treatment of the disease. Rapid drug desensitization is a procedure that induces temporary tolerance to the drug allowing continuation of treatment in patients who have presented HSRs. Most of the desensitization protocols use 3 bags with sequential dilutions of the drug, which are infused in gradual steps. However, it has not been sufficiently investigated whether dilution is essential for successful desensitization. OBJECTIVE: The obj

Associating the blood vitamin A, C, D and E status with tuberculosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Vitamins may play an important role in preventing tuberculosis. The purpose of this work is to associate the vitamin A, C, D and E status with tuberculosis through a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. Web of Science, Pubmed and Scopus were searched from the earliest date of the database to May 2021. The standardized mean differences (SMDs) of blood vitamin concentrations and odds ratios (ORs) of vitamin deficiency between the tuberculosis patients and the control subjects were used as the main effect sizes. The effect sizes were pooled by a random-effects model using

Rapid renutrition improves health status in severely malnourished inpatients with AN - score-based evaluation of a high caloric refeeding protocol in severely malnourished inpatients with anorexia nervosa in an intermediate care unit.

OBJECTIVE: Refeeding syndrome is a feared complication of refeeding patients with anorexia nervosa. There are now a number of controlled studies showing that refeeding with an initial high calorie count is more beneficial than cautious refeeding and is safe under continuous monitoring. However, there have yet not been studies in severe anorexia nervosa. METHOD: We present an observational study in two different samples. The first sample consists of those 1075 out of a total of 3230 patients with anorexia nervosa treated in our hospital within 4 years for whom a complete admission laboratory w
