Vitreoretinal Findings in Nonarteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Although nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is considered a disorder that primarily affects the optic nerve head, optical coherence tomography (OCT) shows peripapillary and foveal subretinal fluid associated with optic disc swelling from NAION. We sought to further evaluate retinal and vitreous changes in patients with NAION. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with NAION at the New England Eye Center between 2013 and 2017 were evaluated using OCT. The presence and distribution of subretinal fluid was analyzed. Evidence of other vitreoretinal changes, including vitreo

Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Uptake in Drilled Hollow Core Fibers for Raman Spectroscopy.

Fiber-based Raman spectroscopy enhances the Raman signal by maximizing the overlap of the optical field and the gas species. However, filling the hollow-core fiber (HCF) with gas requires time that is dependent on the fiber core diameter, fiber length, and pressure of the gas. At ambient pressure, the fiber gas uptake is driven by diffusion into the fiber ends, severely limiting the response time of the system. By laser drilling access holes to the core along the length of the fiber, the uptake time of the gas is reduced, improving the system response time. In this work, we study the carbon di

Optic nerve regeneration--new aspects.

Injury to the optic nerve and its environment provokes a process of degeneration that leads to a degenerative process resulting in an irreversible loss of visual function. We succeeded in stimulating regeneration in injured optic nerves of adult rabbits. The stimulus to regeneration was achieved by implanting in injured optic nerves of adult rabbits substances originating from growing (regenerating) optic nerves of fish or developing optic nerves of neonatal rabbits, and by delaying the degenerative process by irradiating the injured optic nerve with a low energy laser. The effect was manifest

Two Different Endoscopic Procedures Made Feasible by the Janus Mask in a High-Risk Patient.

The Janus mask is a full face mask designed for providing noninvasive ventilation (NIV) during any kind of upper endoscopies (e.g., fiber-optic bronchoscopy, gastrointestinal endoscopy, and transesophageal echocardiography). Due to its unique conformation, its use can be considered for both elective and urgent endoscopic procedures in high-risk patients. In this case report, we present a patient with acute respiratory failure who underwent two consecutive different endoscopic procedures (fiber-optic bronchoscopy and gastrointestinal endoscopy) during continuous positive airway pressure support

[Optic neuropathy in diabetic subjects].

Four clinical forms of optic neuropathy can occur in diabetes: 1. Axial neuropathy is a classical optic neuropathy. 2. Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy is an acute optic disc ischaemia and the visual loss depends on the number of fibers destroyed. 3. Acute disc swelling occurs in young patients with a type 1 diabetes. It can be asymptomatic, but can also simulate optic disc new-vessels. It seems not to be a ciliary but rather an epipapillary and peripapillary capillaropathy. 4. Optic atrophy can constitute the final out come of forms one and too. In the child, the Wolfram ou DIDMOAD syndrome

Energy levels and probe placement in contact transscleral semiconductor diode laser cyclophotocoagulation in human cadaver eyes.

We investigated the effects of semiconductor diode laser contact transscleral cyclophotocoagulation in human cadaver eyes by gross examination, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy to determine optimum clinical treatment parameters. Irradiation was performed using a continuous-wave semiconductor diode laser with a fiber-optic probe. At 1.0 to 1.25 mm posterior to the limbus, spots were centered on the pars plicata by gross examination. Exposures of less than 2 J produced no visible damage. A 2- to 3-J exposure produced mild whitening of the ciliary processes, while 4- to 5-J expo

α-Synuclein Expression Is Preserved in Substantia Nigra GABAergic Fibers of Young and Aged Neurotoxin-Treated Rhesus Monkeys.

α-Synuclein (α-syn) is a small presynaptic protein distributed ubiquitously in the central and peripheral nervous system. In normal conditions, α-syn is found in soluble form, while in Parkinson's disease (PD) it may phosphorylate, aggregate, and combine with other proteins to form Lewy bodies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, in nonhuman primates, whether α-syn expression is affected by age and neurotoxin challenge. Young adult (n = 5, 5-10 years old) and aged (n = 4, 23-25 years old) rhesus monkeys received a single unilateral carotid artery injection of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-t

Applications of Optical Coherence Tomography in Optic Nerve Head Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging tool that is currently used in the evaluation and management of neuro-ophthalmic disorders. The detailed ability to visualize the optic nerve head, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, and the macula, including the ganglion cell layer, allows for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of optic nerve diseases. This review covers the technical aspects of OCT and related imaging techniques in neuro-ophthalmology and discusses its use in common optic nerve head diseases such as optic disc drusen, optic disc coloboma, and elevated

Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy following dengue fever.

Dengue fever is caused by a flavivirus. This infection is endemic in the tropics and warm temperate regions of the world. Ocular manifestations of dengue fever include subconjunctival, vitreous, and retinal haemorrhages; posterior uveitis; optic neuritis; and maculopathies, haemorrhage, and oedema. However anterior ischemic optic neuropathy is a rare presentation. Optic nerve ischemia most frequently occurs at the optic nerve head, where structural crowding of nerve fibers and reduction of the vascular supply may combine to impair perfusion to a critical degree and produce optic disc oedema. Anatomy and evaluation of the optic nerve head.

Evaluation of the optic disc is important for the correct diagnosis and follow-up of optic neuropathies, especially glaucoma. The characteristics of the optic disc depend on various factors, including demographic and population aspects, and analysis of these characteristics may vary according to the methods used. The size and format of the neural rim along with the nerve fiber layer are important to the clinician's judgment regarding the susceptibility of the subject to develop glaucoma. In this study, we reviewed the literature to summarize the main methods and its characteristics in the eval

Anterior segment tomography with the cirrus optical coherence tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an optical acquisition method to examine biological tissues. In recent years, OCT has become an important imaging technology used in diagnosing and following macular pathologies. Further development enabled application of optical coherence tomography in evaluation of the integrity of the nerve fiber layer, optic nerve cupping, anterior chamber angle, or corneal topography. In this manuscript we overview the use of OCT in the clinical practice to enable corneal, iris, ciliary body, and angle evaluation and diagnostics.

Differences in conduction velocities of nerve fibers excited by infrared and electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Infrared neural stimulation (INS) uses short optical pulses to activate nerves. While electrical stimulation (ES) activates large-diameter fibers first, light may preferentially activate small-diameter fibers first, which could be valuable for many clinical applications. NEW METHOD: This study used a compact diode laser of 1470 nm to perform INS. Conduction velocity (CV) measurements were performed to assess differences in fiber type activation between INS and ES in the rat sciatic nerve and the goat vagus nerve. The rat sciatic nerve was chosen as a standard model because of its

Immunosensor Based on Long-Period Fiber Gratings for Detection of Viruses Causing Gastroenteritis.

Since the norovirus is the main cause of acute gastroenteritis all over the world, its fast detection is crucial in medical diagnostics. In this work, a rapid, sensitive, and selective optical fiber biosensor for the detection of norovirus virus-like particles (VLPs) is reported. The sensor is based on highly sensitive long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) coated with antibodies against the main coat protein of the norovirus. Several modification methods were verified to obtain reliable immobilization of protein receptors on the LPFG surface. We were able to detect 1 ng/mL norovirus VLPs in a 40-

Fundus-Based RNFL Quadrant Map Generation Using Depth Estimation.

Evaluating the optic nerve head (ONH) and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is crucial for glaucoma. Though optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers advanced RNFL imaging, its cost limits accessibility. However, fundus images present a valuable alternative, with its availability and lower cost. This study presents a modality for glaucoma assessment using fundus images, i.e., employing depth estimation to generate RNFL thickness maps and delineate TSNIT graphs to create RNFL quadrants. Through this approach, the overall results consist of a prediction accuracy of red, yellow, green and white at
