Various conditions such as fracture, dislocation, tumor, or infection adversely affect the vertebral body and lead to instability. Restoration of a stable anterior column is essential for normal spinal biomechanics. Various biological and mechanical spacers have been used to reconstruct the anterior column after corpectomy. In this retrospective review, the authors evaluated clinical charts and radiographs of 13 patients receiving titanium surgical mesh (TSM)-bone graft composite to reconstruct the anterior spinal column in the thoracic or lumbar region. The objective of this review was to eva

The results of Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation in 50 patients with idiopathic scoliosis were evaluated. The patients were followed for 24 to 108 months with a mean follow-up of 5 years. Their average age was 15 years and 3 months. The scoliotic curves were classified according to King et al. There were 4 type I, 20 type II, 10 type III, 10 type IV and 1 type V. Five curves could not be included in this classification: 2 double lumbar, 1 right lumbar and 2 left thoracic curves. Coronal plane analysis showed an average postoperative correction of 56% for thoracic curves and 57% for lumbar curve

Seven patients treated in infancy by a lumbar theco-peritoneal shunt for idiopathic communicating hydrocephalus presented later in childhood after developing a characteristic orthopaedic syndrome. This included a severe, rigid and progressive lumbar hyperlordosis, severe bilateral restriction of straight leg raising and abnormalities of stance and gait. Four of the patients, who had severe hyperlordotic curves of over 90 degrees, required operations to correct their extreme deformity. The recommended method of correction is a three-stage procedure: first, anterior wedge resection osteotomies a

BACKGROUND: Previous findings suggest that wearing a lumbar belt may benefit some patients with low back pain; however, the mechanisms of action are not yet fully understood.
RESEARCH QUESTION: The effect of wearing two flexible (extensible and non-extensible) lumbar belts on trunk postural control was investigated during an unstable sitting task.
METHODS: Healthy subjects and subjects with LBP sat on a wobbling chair, with and without the lumbar belts. Chair rotation was measured in the sagittal and frontal planes, and 10 linear and nonlinear measures of balance were computed to assess the

INTRODUCTION: Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common deformity of the anterior thoracic wall. The Nuss technique allows the thorax to be reshaped with the aid of a retrosternal metallic bar. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the complication rate between the original Nuss technique and a lightly modified approach.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We performed a retrospective single-center observational study based on the medical files of patients operated for PE in the Pediatric Surgery Unit between July 2004 and July 2015. We divided two patient groups according to the operating techniq

Essex-Lopresti injury consists of a fracture or dislocation of the radial head, rupture of the interosseous membrane (IOM), which is the main pathology, and a dislocated distal radio-ulnar joint. There are several reports in the literature, including cadaveric studies, which suggest an operative solution for this complicated injury. The torn IOM is not treated during the traditional operative repair. In the following paper, we suggest a treatment for the IOM by unloading it with the TightRope device. This device temporarily takes the tension off the torn IOM and assists in reduction and mainte

STUDY DESIGN: Treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures has rapidly evolved with the use of kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty. Likewise, lumbar spinal stenosis is being treated with less invasive procedures such as interspinous process spacers. The combination of such minimally invasive procedures offers new advantages to selected patients.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of vertebral augmentation combined with interspinous decompression procedure in the same sitting.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: We present 2 cases of elderly females who had lumbar compression fractures with back pain, radicular pai

Fusion of cervical spine in kyphotic alignment has been proven to produce an acceleration of degenerative changes at adjacent levels. Stand-alone cages are reported to have a relatively high incidence of implant subsidence with secondary kyphotic deformity. This malalignment may theoretically lead to adjacent segment disease in the long term. The prospective study analysed possible risk factors leading to cage subsidence with resulting sagittal malalignment of cervical spine. Radiographic data of 100 consecutive patients with compressive radiculo-/myelopathy due to degenerative disc prolapse o

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the results of the new surgical treatment of complete acromioclavicular (ac) dislocations using coracoclavicular (cc) fixation with a shape memory metal C-hook implant.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients were prospectively analyzed. They all had a Tossy III ac dislocation due to trauma. The ac ligament was reinserted using a surgical bone anchor, and the position of the joint was restored by fixing it with a C-hook. After 3 months the C-hook was removed. Functional status, symptom severity, X-rays and patient satisfaction were analyzed during clinical c

STUDY DESIGN: A technical report of a new, versatile halo-pelvic apparatus for use in spinal immobilization is presented.
OBJECTIVES: To show how simple modifications of existing external fixation devices allow a halo-pelvic fixation apparatus to be constructed.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Halo-pelvic fixation has been used successfully in the past for immobilization and correction of severe spinal deformities such as tuberculous kyphosis. With the advent of new spinal instrumentation systems and techniques, external immobilization of the whole spine is rarely indicated. However, on rare occ

Intramedullary fixation of long bones in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta has become the gold standard for prevention and treatment of fractures and subsequent deformities. The use of expanding rods has reduced the number of operations needed compared with fixed-length rods, allowing the growth of bones. The authors describe the technique of exchange of a Sheffield rod in a child in whom the bone has outgrown the rod length to the point where the rod is about to disengage or has just done so. The minimally invasive technique adds to the advantages already described for the Sheffield rod s

Surgical management of first ray insufficiency in HAV or hallux limitus is crucial to long-term success. Although technically demanding, the Lapidus fusion serves to address the deformity at its apex and restores normal weight bearing to the foot. This arthrodesis offers predictable, durable results in addressing various first ray deformities and occupies an important place in the foot and ankle surgeon's armamentarium. The authors' technique is described herein for the interest of and evaluation by surgeons performing this procedure. As clinicians recognize the importance of addressing proxim
