Diagnostic imaging in parasitic infections.

Imaging may play a major role in diagnosis when the clinical condition suggests a parasite, it may often be useful in confirming a diagnosis and assessing the results of treatment, and it may provide the first indication of parasitic infection when the symptomatology is vague. This article presents guidelines for reviewing diagnostic images for pediatricians looking for the diagnosis or the differential diagnosis of their patient's ill health when parasitic infection is suspected.

Nutritional aspects of parasitic infection.

The nutritional basis of the ecological relationship between parasites and their hosts is reviewed using examples of the parasitic infections of man whenever possible. Two important points are discussed first: the distinction between parasitic infection and parasitic disease, and the concepts of synergism or antagonism between undernutrition and parasitic disease. The effects of parasites on the nutritional status of the host are examined in four ways. First, in terms of the ways in which parasites can disturb nutritive processes by effects on physical activity to obtain food, and by effects o…

Encysted parasitic larvae in the mouth.

Oral appearances of intestinal parasitic disease are rare. One such appearance is the presence in oral tissues of encysted or encapsulated l … ay be treated by simple excision, but care must be taken that the cyst does not rupture, as in some parasites this may result in new cyst formation. Nematode infection in the oral cavity, the most common of which appears to be trichinosis, is rarely reported. Patients with oral or maxillofacial (or both) parasitic disease must undergo a thorough medical inv …

Nutritional requirements in parasitic diseases.

"Nutritional requirements" means different things in different contexts. Generally, the term refers to national or international standards o … per day (calculated as 5 kcal/g of tissue). Increased weight gain following treatment of intestinal parasites such as Ascaris lumbricoides or Giardia lamblia provides similar estimates, as does measurement of energy and protein absorption. These values are within normal variance estimates. Sick children do not eat well and apparently do not eat enough on he …

Cytologic detection of parasitic disorders.

Parasitic diseases are common in developing countries; yet they are infrequently diagnosed in cytologic material. Six cases are described where routine cytologic examination identified the parasites and suggested the diagnosis. There were three cases of Entamoeba histolytica infection of the female genital tract and one each of hydatid cyst of the brain, Strongyloides stercoralis infection of the lung and filarial infection of the urinary bladder. To our knowledge, cytologic diagnosis of hydatid cyst of the brain and filarial infection of the urinary bladder has not been previously reported.

A survey of gastrointestinal parasitism in pigs.

Over a period of two years 180 pork pigs, 144 baconers and 144 sows from two slaughterhouses in northern England were examined for gastrointestinal parasites. Sows showed the highest level and intensity of infection, 85 per cent harbouring the dominant parasites Oesophagostomum dentatum and O quadrispinulatum; the highest worm burden recorded was 21,000. Hyostrongylus rubidus was present in 28.5 per cent of sows but virtually absent from younger pigs. Small numbers of Ascaris suum and Trichuris suis were recorded, 16 per cent and 23 per cent respectively in pork pigs and lower in older animals…

Some aspects of intracellular parasitism.

In intracellular parasitism the host cell is a true and hospitable host. The parasite does not have to break in the door. It has subtle ways of inducing the host to open the door and welcome it in. One of the exciting fields in the future of parasitology is to find out what these ways are and why they are sometimes so highly specific that the cell that invites one parasite in will not open the door to another closely related species. Once inside, the parasite not only exploits nutrients already available in the cell, and the cell's energy-yielding system, but it further induces the cell to ass
