The Neurophysiological Effects of Craniosacral Treatment on Heart Rate Variability: A Systematic Review of Literature and Meta-Analysis.

Craniosacral treatment (CST) is an osteopathic technique grounded in the assumption that there is an intrinsic, fine movement of the cerebrospinal fluid. This rhythmic movement can be utilized for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes by palpation and manipulation of the skull, spine, and associated connective tissues. Therapeutic benefit is likely due to action on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), specifically through the vagus nerve. Current literature on the neurophysiological effects of CST is limited, which has contributed to controversy regarding its effectiveness. Heart rate variability

Scorpion envenomation and inflammation: Beyond neurotoxic effects.

Scorpion envenomation results in a wide range of clinical manifestations that are mostly attributed to the activation of the autonomic nervous system by venom toxins. In fact, sympathetic and parasympathetic disturbances play important roles during poisoning. However, scorpion venom also induces a complex hyperinflammatory state that occurs parallel to systemic inflammatory response syndrome and acute sepsis. After a scorpion sting, innate immune cells are exposed to the venom molecules, which bind to pattern recognition receptors and activate pro-inflammatory pathways that contribute toward t

Parasympathetic neurons derived from human pluripotent stem cells model human diseases and development.

Autonomic parasympathetic neurons (parasymNs) control unconscious body responses, including "rest-and-digest." ParasymN innervation is important for organ development, and parasymN dysfunction is a hallmark of autonomic neuropathy. However, parasymN function and dysfunction in humans are vastly understudied due to the lack of a model system. Human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived neurons can fill this void as a versatile platform. Here, we developed a differentiation paradigm detailing the derivation of functional human parasymNs from Schwann cell progenitors. We employ these neurons (1) t

Mechanisms underpinning sympathetic nervous activity and its modulation using transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation.

What is the topic of this review? This review briefly considers what modulates sympathetic nerve activity and how it may change as we age or in pathological conditions. It then focuses on transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation, a method of neuromodulation in autonomic cardiovascular control. What advances does it highlight? The review considers the pathways involved in eliciting the changes in autonomic balance seen with transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation in relationship to other neuromodulatory techniques. The autonomic nervous system, consisting of the sympathetic and parasympathetic bra

[Meningeal hemorrhage disclosed by the initiation of Prinzmetal's angina].

The association of a cardiac disturbance and a subarachnoïd hemorrhage is well known but the cardiac signs seldom look the most important. When studying a case which was very particular because the cardiac signs consisted in a Prinzmetal's variant angina, it finality appears that the Prinzmetal's angina is not so rare as could be thought in such circumstances. Therefore a neurological pathology hidden by a cardiac one has been rarely reported such as it was seen in that case. In the literature, the influence of the parasympathetic and especially the sympathetic nervous system is emphasized as

Phase-Dependent Changes in Heart Rate Variability During the Menstrual Cycle in Healthy Young Women at a Tertiary Care Center.

Background The menstrual cycle is characterized by cyclical hormonal fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone that influence multiple physiological systems, including the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a widely accepted, non-invasive method for assessing autonomic nervous system activity. This study aimed to evaluate HRV across different phases of the menstrual cycle in young, healthy female students. Methodology This observational study was conducted in the Department of Physiology at Maharishi Markandeshwar Institute of Medical Sciences and Res

High-sensitivity quantification of acetylcholine and choline in human cerebrospinal fluid with a validated LC-MS/MS method.

Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter of the parasympathetic nervous system, synthesized from choline and involved in several neurodegenerative diseases. Exploration of cholinergic neurotransmission in the human central nervous system is limited by the lack of a sensitive and specific method for the determination of acetylcholine and choline expression. We developed an hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry method for the quantification of both molecules in human cerebrospinal fluid samples. An extensive selectivity study towards endogenous interfering compounds, in …

Selective ablation of the ligament of Marshall reduces ischemia and reperfusion-induced ventricular arrhythmias.

Cardiac sympathetic tone overdrive is a key mechanism of arrhythmia. Cardiac sympathetic nerves denervation, such as LSG ablation or renal sympathetic denervation, suppressed both the prevalence of VAs and the incidence of SCD. Accumulating evidence demonstrates the ligament of Marshall (LOM) is a key component of the sympathetic conduit between the left stellate ganglion (LSG) and the ventricles. The present study aimed to investigate the roles of the distal segment of LOM (LOMLSPV) denervation in ischemia and reperfusion (IR)-induced VAs, and compared that LSG denervation. Thirty-three canin

Neural regulation of submandibular gland blood flow in the streptozotocin-diabetic rat: evidence for impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilatation.

Functional changes in vascular tone and reactivity arise early in diabetes, and endothelial dysfunction plays a central role in the development of these microvascular abnormalities. Blood flow in the rat submandibular gland is mainly under neural regulation, which is mediated in part via endothelium-dependent mechanisms. Given the role of the endothelium in regulating blood flow and the deleterious effects of diabetes on endothelial cell function, we hypothesised that diabetes would significantly impair neural regulation of submandibular gland vascular perfusion. Three weeks after the inductio

Are affective disorders associated with alterations of heart rate variability?

A standardized heart rate analysis was carried out in unmedicated patients with major depression, melancholic type (n = 16), panic disorder (n = 16), reactive depression with suicide attempts during the preceding 24 h (n = 16) and in 16 normal control subjects. The investigations included time- and frequency-derived measurements of heart rate variability. In the patients with reactive depression, no differences could be detected as compared with the control group. The patients with panic disorder showed a significantly increased low-frequency band of spectral analysis (P < 0.01) and a marginal

Interaction between the central histaminergic and the muscarinic cholinergic systems.

Histamine (HA) was given intracerebroventricularly (icv) to rats anaesthetized with pentobarbital. During the first minute after administration, HA alone elicited a small fall in blood pressure (BP) and a decrease in heart rate (HR), followed by a distinct increase in those parameters. Pretreatment with naloxone (Nx) in a dose of 0.1 microgram icv significantly decreased the rise in BP and augmented the increase in HR. When the rats were premedicated with atropine methyl bromide (ATMB), 15 min before histamine, higher doses of ATMB (100 micrograms icv or 25 micrograms ip) significantly inhibit

Cardiovascular effects of NaCl microinjections into the nucleus of the solitary tract.

The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) was systematically explored in the alpha-chloralose-anesthetized rat for sites that elicited changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) during microinjections (20 nl) of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS; pH 7.2-7.4) or NaCl solutions containing various concentrations of NaCl (104-326 mM). Decreases in MAP (range 7-83 mmHg) and HR (range 10-70 bpm) were consistently elicited from sites in the caudal medial and commissural subnuclei of NTS. Microinjection of PBS or NaCl into other NTS subnuclei or area postrema did not elicit cardiovascular

Reflex epicardial coronary vasoconstriction elicited by nicotine in anaesthetized dogs.

The effects of arterial chemoreceptor activation by nicotine on coronary artery diameter was studied in anaesthetized, artificially ventilated dogs. Left circumflex coronary artery diameter, coronary blood flow, calculated mean coronary resistance, systemic arterial blood pressure and heart rate were measured. In control dogs (n = 10) the injection of nicotine (100 micrograms) into the carotid artery evoked an increase of arterial pressure (+22 +/- 9 mm Hg) and a decrease in heart rate (-36 +/- 13 beats/min), and tended to increase coronary blood flow (+7 +/- 4 ml/min). Regulation of salivary kallikrein secretion in submandibular gland.

Unstimulated pairs of rat submandibular glands were compared with regard to their wet weight, total protein content and kallikrein antigenic activity. Paired glands from the same animal were found to be comparable, whereas differences from one animal to another were considerable. One of two paired glands was extirpated and used as control, and the other was subsequently subjected to stimulation. Salivary secretion was induced parasympathomimetically (intraperitoneal injections of pilocarpine; perfusion with acetylcholine and electrical stimulation of the ductal nerve plexus near the gland hilu
