Describing the trend of ammonia, particulate matter and nitrogen oxides: The role of livestock activities in northern Italy during Covid-19 quarantine.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and ammonia (NH3) are among the main contributors to the formation of secondary particulate matter (PM2.5), which represent a severe risk to human health. Even if important improvements have been achieved worldwide, traffic, industrial activities, and the energy sector are mostly responsible for NOx and SOx release; instead, the agricultural sector is mainly responsible for NH3 emissions. Due to the emergency of coronavirus disease, in Italy schools and universities have been locked down from late February 2020, followed in March by almost all produc…

Complex to simple: In vitro exposure of particulate matter simulated at the air-liquid interface discloses the health impacts of major air pollutants.

Particulate matter (PM) exposure poses many adverse effects on human health. However, it is challenging to clearly differentiate between the contributions of individual pollutants on toxicity from complex mixtures of ambient air pollutants. The aim of this study is to generate aerosols constituted by silica nanoparticles (NPs) and bisulfate to serve as simulators of particle-associated high-sulfur air pollution. Then, the health impacts of sulfur dioxide were evaluated at the cellular level using an air-liquid interface (ALI) exposure chamber. BEAS-2B cells were exposed to either nano-silica o…

Effects of early postnatal exposure to fine particulate matter on emotional and cognitive development and structural synaptic plasticity in immature and mature rats.

INTRODUCTION: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is closely associated with many neurological disorders including neurodegenerative disease, stroke, and brain tumors. However, the toxic effects of PM2.5 on neurodevelopment remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to determine the neurotoxic effects of early postnatal exposure to PM2.5 in immature and mature rats. METHODS: We exposed neonatal rats to PM2.5 (2 or 10 mg/kg body weight) through intranasal instillation from postnatal day (PND) 3-15, once a day. Emotional and cognitive development were evaluated using the elevated plus maze, forced swi…

Spatiotemporal Association of Real-Time Concentrations of Black Carbon (BC) with Fine Particulate Matters (PM2.5) in Urban Hotspots of South Korea.

We evaluated the spatiotemporal distributions of black carbon (BC) and particulate matters with aerodynamic diameters of less than 2.5 m (PM2.5) concentrations at urban diesel engine emission (DEE) hotspots of South Korea. Concentrations of BC and PM2.5 were measured at the entrance gate of two diesel bus terminals and a train station, in 2014. Measurements were conducted simultaneously at the hotspot (Site 1) and at its adjacent, randomly selected, residential areas, apartment complex near major roadways, located with the same direction of 300 m (Site 2) and 500 m (Site 3) away from Site 1 on…

An exploratory analysis of the relationship between ambient ozone and particulate matter concentrations during early pregnancy and selected birth defects in Texas.

We performed an exploratory analysis of ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations during early pregnancy and multiple types of birth defects. Data on births were obtained from the Texas Birth Defects Registry (TBDR) and the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) in Texas. Air pollution concentrations were previously determined by combining modeled air pollution concentrations with air monitoring data. The analysis generated hypotheses for future, confirmatory studies; although many of the observed associations were null. The hypotheses are provided by an observed a…

Bioaccumulation and metabolism of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in carp (Cyprinus carpio) in a water/sediment microcosm: important role of particulate matter exposure.

Microcosms were built up to simulate a pond system with polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contaminated sediment and bioorganisms. The microcosms were divided into groups A and B. In group A, both benthic invertebrates (tubificid worms) and carp (Cyprinu carpio) were added, while in group B, only fish were added. After exposure for 20 d, the fish were sampled (exposure I). A net was fixed in the microcosms, and new fish were added (exposure II). These fish were prohibited from contacting the sediment by the net, and the accumulation and depuration of PBDEs in the fish were investigated. Amon

Exposure to particulate matters (PM2.5) and airborne nicotine in computer game rooms after implementation of smoke-free legislation in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION: In South Korea, computer game rooms are subject to regulations mandating a designated nonsmoking area pursuant to Article 7 of the Enforcement Rules of the National Health Promotion Act; nonsmoking areas must be enclosed on all sides by solid and impermeable partitions. METHODS: Using PM(2.5) monitors (SidePak AM510) and airborne nicotine monitors, we measured concentrations in smoking and nonsmoking areas to examine whether separation of the nonsmoking areas as currently practiced is a viable way to protect the nonsmoking area from secondhand smoke exposure. Convenient sampling

Short-term effect of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) on daily mortality due to diseases of the circulatory system in Madrid (Spain).

INTRODUCTION: Owing to their small size, fine particles, i.e., those having a diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM(2.5)), have a high alveolar penetration capacity, thereby triggering a local inflammatory process with circulatory repercussion. Despite being linked to respiratory and cardiovascular morbidities, there is limited evidence of an association between this type of particulate matter and short-term increases in mortality. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyse and quantify the short-term impact of PM(2.5) on daily mortality due to diseases of the circulatory system, registered in Madrid fr…

Fine particulate matter and tobacco product exposure exacerbates metabolic syndrome-related colon cancer via regulating oxidative stress and tumor-associated macrophage interactions.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is closely associated with prolonged exposure to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) and tobacco carcinogens, 4-methylnitrosamino-l-3-pyridyl-butanone (NNK). However, due to a lack of understanding of its intricate pathological processes, there is currently no approved clinical medication or successful treatment plan. Also, tobacco carcinogens and PM 2.5 are implicated in the progression of CRC by the onset of a metabolic disorder. Nonetheless, direct evidence connecting the metabolic disorder to NNK/PM 2.5-mediated CRC development has yet to b…

Postnatal particulate matter exposure alters developmental milestones and brain gene expression in apoE transgenic mice in a sex- and genotype-dependent manner.

Air pollution, with particulate matter (PM) as one of its most critical environmental contaminants, represents a major global health threat and a leading cause of premature mortality. PM can reach the central nervous system (CNS) and has been implicated in both neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Individual susceptibility to PM-induced neurotoxicity is shaped by genetic background. Apolipoprotein E (APOE), the major CNS apolipoprotein, plays a key role in brain homeostasis and neurodevelopment, and its isoforms may differentially modulate vulnerability to environmental insults.…

miR-31a-5p targeting Crebbp suppresses Wnt/β-catenin and TGF-β pathways to alleviate oil mist particulate matter-induced pulmonary fibrosis.

Oil mist particulate matter (OMPM), which is a representative airborne contaminant pervasive in occupational and residential environments, poses threats to human health and sustainable development, particularly through its detrimental effects on respiratory integrity. Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) can lead to high mortality and impair quality of life, and this disease is currently widely recognized by the academic community as an important reference endpoint for studying the toxic effects associated with OMPM. This study aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying OMPM exposure-induced pul…

Residential exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and incident breast cancer among young women in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has been classified as a human carcinogen based largely on findings for respiratory cancers. Emerging, but limited, evidence suggests that it increases the risk of breast cancer, particularly among younger women. We characterized associations between residential exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and breast cancer. Analyses were performed using data collected in the Ontario Environmental Health Study (OEHS). METHODS: The OEHS, a population-based case-control study, identified incident cases of breast cancer in Ontario, Cana…

Association between long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and its chemical constituents and premature death in individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with an increased total mortality. However, the association of PM2.5 with mortality in people living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS, PLWHA) and the relationship between its constituents and adverse outcomes remain unknown. In this cohort study, 28,140 PLWHA were recruited from the HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Response Information Management System of the Hubei Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in China between 2001 and 2020. The annual PM2.5 chemical composition data…

Filtered air intervention modulates hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid/gonadal axes by attenuating inflammatory responses in adult rats after fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure.

We have previously reported that filtered air (FA) intervention reduces inflammation and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis activation after fine particulate matter (PM2.5 exposure). Whether FA also modulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes in rats after PM2.5 exposure is still unknown. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to PM2.5 by using a "real-world" PM2.5 exposure system, and the FA intervention was conducted by renewing for 15 days. PM2.5 inhalation decreased thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and thyroxine (T4) levels in both m…

Susceptible windows of exposure to fine particulate matter and fetal growth trajectories in the Spanish INMA (INfancia y Medio Ambiente) birth cohort.

While prior studies report associations between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and fetal growth, few have explored temporally refined susceptible windows of exposure. We included 2328 women from the Spanish INMA Project from 2003 to 2008. Longitudinal growth curves were constructed for each fetus using ultrasounds from 12, 20, and 34 gestational weeks. Z-scores representing growth trajectories of biparietal diameter, femur length, abdominal circumference (AC), and estimated fetal weight (EFW) during early (0-12 weeks), mid- (12-20 weeks), and late (20-34 weeks) pregnancy were calcula…

Long-Term Effects of High Exposure to Ambient Fine Particulate Matter on Coronary Heart Disease Incidence: A Population-Based Chinese Cohort Study.

Evidence of long-term effects of high exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on coronary heart disease (CHD) remains limited. We incorporated the high-resolution satellite-based PM2.5 estimates with a large-scale, population-based Chinese cohort comprising 118 229 individuals, to assess the CHD risk of long-term exposure to high PM2.5. During the follow-up of 908 376 person-years, 1586 incident CHD cases were identified. The long-term average PM2.5 concentration for study population was 64.96 μg/m3, ranging from 31.17 to 96.96 μg/m3. For an increment of 10 μg/m3 in PM2.5, the mult…
