Contact lens correction of presbyopia.

The contact lens wearing presbyopic population is underserved worldwide. There are several available options, including single vision contact lenses and spectacle over-correction for near, monovision, rigid gas permeable (GP) multifocal and bifocal lens designs and soft bifocal lens designs. This paper presents an overview of the latest research and clinical experience as it pertains to these forms of correction. Recent comparative studies concluded that contact lens multifocals perform better in many different forms of visual measurements, in some cases performing similar to best spectacle co

Changes in Visual Function over Time in Koreans with Non-arteritic Anterior Ischaemic Optic Neuropathy.

Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) causes severe visual loss in elderly patients. However, there are not much data of clinical course of NAION in Asian patients. To evaluate changes in visual acuity and visual field defects associated with non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) among Korean patients, the medical records of 50 eyes from 43 patients with NAION patients seen from 1989 to 2011 were reviewed. A significant change in visual acuity was defined as a three-line change in Snellen acuity. Visual field defects were evaluated with Goldmann perimetr

Racial Differences in Triage for Emergency Department Patients with Subjective Chief Complaints.

Introduction: Black and Hispanic patients are frequently assigned lower acuity triage scores than White patients. This can lead to longer wait times, less aggressive care, and worse outcomes. In this study we aimed to determine whether these effects are more pronounced for patients with subjective complaints. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis for all adult visits between 2016-2019 at an urban academic emergency department (ED) with acuity-based pods. We determined rates of initial high-acuity triage both across all patients and among the subset located in the high-acuity pod at ti

Visual acuity and optic nerve size assessed by magnetic resonance imaging in optic nerve hypoplasia.

We investigated the relationship between optic nerve (ON) size and visual acuity in children with optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH). The medical records of patients <19 years with ONH who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and visual acuity assessment were reviewed. ON diameter at orbital and cisternal segments was assessed independently by two neuroradiologists and compared with visual acuity. ON diameter <1.7 mm represented a cutoff, below which was significantly associated with visual acuity of 20/200 or worse (P = 0.04) and above which was significantly associated with visual acui

[Evaluation of visual acuity of small children with preferential looking methods].

With preferential looking (PL) techniques, especially the Acuity Card Procedure (Teller Acuity Cards), the visual acuity in small children can be determined. PL-testing was used in 294 children in the Strabismus and Amblyopia Department of the Ophthamology Hospital in Kraków. These children had been directed from other ophthalmologic departments. Almost all of them showed general retardation and their visual acuity could not be tested with traditional methods. The testing was considered positive when the visual acuity of each eye could be determined separately. Such result was obtained in 230
