Although considered a relatively uncommon sports injury, publications on pectoralis major (PM) injuries have increased in the last couple of decades. Knowledge of the complex anatomy of the PM muscle is important in diagnosing, understanding the complexity of the injury, and determining the suitable modality of management of these injuries. Despite the increase in publications, there is no consensus on the superiority of any proposed surgical management. We present a case of a recreational body builder who presented to our clinics with a rare pattern of isolated musculotendinous junction of th

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma also called undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma is an aggressive cancer type with a poor prognosis. Primary laryngeal localisation is very rare. It is indicative for radical laryngectomy for prevention of following complications and recurrences. Surgery presents the only one curative chance in case of parastomal recurrence. Creating a new permanent tracheostomy is the aim of the procedure, assisted by some tracheal release or myoplasty procedures. We present a 76 year-old man with parastomal recurrence of malignant fibrous histiocytoma after multiple non-radical

Poland syndrome is a rare developmental disorder characterized by unilateral, complete or partial, absence of the pectoralis major (and often minor) muscle, accompanied with ipsilateral hand malformations. To date, no clear genetic cause has been associated with Poland syndrome, although familial cases have been reported. We report the employment of trio exome investigation and the identification of a heterozygous de novo pathogenic variant in the SFMBT1 gene, a transcription factor associated with transcriptional repression during development, in a 14-yr-old boy with Poland syndrome. We furth

Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon tumor with strong association with asbestos exposure. Few cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma metastatic to the female breast have been reported. Herein, we presented, for the first time, a case of locally infiltrating malignant pleural mesothelioma forming a mass in the breast of a male as the first pathologically confirmed manifestation of the disease. Breast ultrasound revealed an irregular mass in the right breast which involves the pectoralis muscle. Breast core biopsy revealed a proliferation of neoplastic epithelioid cells mimicking an infiltrat

NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type is an aggressive and uncommon malignancy. Disease that occurs outside of the aerodigestive tract exhibits an even more aggressive clinical behaviour and does not respond as well to conventional therapy compared to its nasal counterpart. We report such a case of NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type, that presented as an anterior chest wall mass, arising from the left pectoralis muscle. An interesting feature we wish to highlight is the associated eosinophilia that corresponded to disease activity, exhibiting fluctuations with surgical resection and chemotherapy. To the

A restrained motor vehicle accident victim suffered from delayed onset left pectoralis myospasms refractory to multiple treatments: behavioural, conservative, physical therapy, opiate, muscle relaxer and incomplete response to invasive pain management spinal blocks. After conduction of a literature review, several authors had noted the mechanism of α-γ loop dysfunction resulting in myospams, and also case studies which described painful postsurgical myospasms that were treated with neurectomy and/or botulinum toxin A with successful results. The patient in this case underwent an initial lidoca

AIM: To investigate the possible connection of Poland's syndrome with the presence of lung bullae and, thus, with an increased risk for recurrent pneumothorax.
PATIENTS-METHODS: Two male patients, aged 19 and 21 years respectively were submitted to our department after their second incident of pneumothorax. Both had Poland's syndrome (unilaterally hypoplastic chest wall with pectoralis major muscle atrophy) and both had multiple bullae to the ipsilateral lung based on CT findings. The patients were treated operatively (bullectomy, lung apicectomy, partial parietal pleurectomy and chemical ple

Poland's syndrome is a rare congenital entity characterized by unilateral partial or total hypoplasia of the major pectoralis muscle, breast and/or ipsilateral hand abnormalities. It has been reported in association with various structural and functional abnormalities. We report about a 23-year-old male kick-boxer with Poland's syndrome who presented in our department the history of two traumatic anterior shoulder dislocations due to boxing and self-reductions. Physical examination showed an instability of the left shoulder, and the MRI scans demonstrated a Bankart lesion. The patient had been

INTRODUCTION: Arterial variations of the upper extremity are commonly seen in the radial and ulnar arteries. Arterial variations can be damaged through iatrogenic means if not properly documented.
CASE PRESENTATION: A rare arterial anomaly was found in a 61-year-old female cadaver consisting of an arterio-arterial malformation between a high-origin radial artery and the brachial artery within the cubital fossa. The high-origin radial artery arose from the axillary artery, deep to the pectoralis minor muscle. It coursed superficially through the anterior compartment of the arm, converging with

Acquired perforating dermatosis (APD) is characterized by umbilicated 1- to 10-mm-measuring papulonodules with a central adherent oystershell-like keratotic plug, typically on the dorsa of the hands, forearms and over the knees. APD is associated with systemic diseases, especially diabetes mellitus and/or renal failure. Histologically the lesions show transepidermal elimination of altered dermal components into a cup-shaped epidermal depression. We present a 69-year-old man with coexisting APD and Poland syndrome (PS), an association not yet described. PS (OMIM 173800) is a rare congenital ano

Poland's syndrome is an uncommon congenital anomaly of the chest wall characterized by the absence of the pectoralis major muscle and other nearby musculoskeletal components. Many associated aberrations over the thoracic cage, intrathoracic organs, and upper limbs have been reported. However, spontaneous pneumothorax in these patients has not been reported. Here, we describe two patients with both Poland's anomaly and spontaneous pneumothorax. One patient was a 16-year-old boy with left chest wall hypoplasia and pneumothorax on the right side. The other was a 27-year-old man with right chest w

The reasons for the dramatic change during the past decade in the United States regarding the surgical treatment of patients with potentially curable invasive breast cancers from the classical radical mastectomy to the modified radical mastectomy are discussed. The various types of modified radical mastectomy are described and the indications for their use as part of a moderate selective surgical approach to breast cancer are discussed in detail. The results obtained in 846 patients with potentially curable breast cancers who were followed for ten years or more are presented: 80.3% had less th

Cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI) often results in bilateral impairment of the arms, leading to difficulties in performing daily activities. However, little is known about the neuromotor alterations that affect the ability of individuals with cSCI to perform coordinated movements with both arms. To address this issue, we developed and tested a functional assessment that integrates clinical, kinematic, and muscle activity measures, including the evaluation of bilateral arm movements. Twelve subjects with a C5-C7 spinal lesion and six unimpaired subjects underwent an evaluation that included th

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive disease often accompanied by skeletal muscle wasting. We investigated whether skeletal muscle mass and muscle attenuation on computed tomography (CT) are predictors of mortality in IPF patients, using a nationwide cloud-based database and web-based multidisciplinary discussion (MDD) system.
METHODS: IPF patients diagnosed using MDD from April 2009 to March 2014 were included. We analyzed the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the erector spinae muscle (ESMCSA) and the pectoralis muscle (PMCSA), muscle attenuation of the ESM (ESMMA),

The ontogeny of pectoralis muscle bioenergetics was studied in growing Adélie penguin chicks during the first month after hatching and compared with adults using permeabilized fibers and isolated mitochondria. With pyruvate-malate-succinate or palmitoyl-carnitine as substrates, permeabilized fiber respiration markedly increased during chick growth (3-fold) and further rose in adults (1.4-fold). Several markers of muscle fiber oxidative activity (cytochrome oxidase, citrate synthase, hydroxyl-acyl-CoA dehydrogenase) increased 6- to 19-fold with age together with large rises in intermyofibrillar

Hypovolemia and hypotension in traumatized patients as well as those undergoing long-lasting surgical procedures lead to hypoperfusion of tissues. Combined with the trauma of flap elevation and the warm ischemia during performance of the anastomoses, hypoperfusion of flap tissues may lead to flap failure. The influence of hypovolemia, ischemia and reperfusion on flap macro- and microcirculation was studied in an acute experiment on a new musculocutaneous pectoralis flap developed in minipigs. Using a multichannel laser Doppler system we studied, simultaneously and continuously, microcirculator

BACKGROUND: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) causes neurogenic symptoms in 95% of the cases due to neurovascular bundle compression. The treatment goal is the decompression of the neurovascular structures. In the last decade, non-surgical treatments have been evaluated as a treatment option for spastic syndromes and thoracic outlet syndrome. In this study we report the use of botulinum toxin (BTX-A) injection as a diagnostic tool to identify the pectoral minor syndrome, and as a less aggressive treatment-option.
METHODS: An observational cohort study of patients with neurogenic thoracic outlet

SCOPE: Allicin, a product of enzymatic reaction when garlic is injured, plays an important role in maintaining glucose homeostasis in mammals. However, the effect of allicin on glucose homeostasis in the state of insulin resistance remains to be elucidated. This study investigates the effect of allicin on glucose metabolism using different muscle fibers in a chicken model.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Day-old male Arbor Acres broilers are randomly divided into three groups and fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 150, or 300 mg kg-1 allicin for 42 days. Results show that allicin improves the zootech
