Trait and social anxiety in adults with chronic stuttering: conclusions following meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: The relationship between chronic stuttering and anxiety has been a matter of some debate over the past two decades, with a major emphasis of research focused on examining whether people who stutter have abnormally elevated levels of trait or social anxiety. The major goal of this paper was to perform a systematic literature review and perform meta-analyses on research that has assessed (i) trait anxiety and (ii) social anxiety, in adults who stutter. METHOD: Only studies that met strict inclusion criteria were selected for the meta-analyses. Two meta-analyses were conducted, the firs

Machine learning classification of prevalent chronic disease using multidimensional social, behavioral, and psychological determinants: A cross-sectional analysis of the 2024 national health interview survey.

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases account for approximately 90% of the $4.5 trillion annual healthcare expenditure in the United States. While traditional clinical risk factors have been extensively studied, the predictive utility of multidimensional social determinants of health (SDOH), including psychosocial factors such as loneliness, psychological distress, and social support, remains inadequately characterized within machine learning (ML) prediction frameworks. OBJECTIVE: To develop and compare ML models that classify the presence of six major chronic conditions-hypertension, type 2 diabetes,

Development, system design, safety, and performance metrics of a conversational agent for reducing depressive and anxious symptoms based on a large language model: The MHAI study.

BACKGROUND: Conversational agents based on large language models (LLMs) have shown moderate efficacy in reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms. However, most existing evaluations lack methodological transparency, rely on closed-source models, and show limited standardization in performance and safety assessment. OBJECTIVE: We have two study objectives: (1) to develop an LLM-based conversational agent through system design analysis and initial functionality testing, and (2) to evaluate its safety and performance through standardized assessment in controlled simulated interactions focused on

Brain connectivity and its relation to cognitive function in patients with post-COVID 19 condition after mild infection.

Neurological symptoms are common in post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) and have been linked to underlying brain alterations. However, in individuals with PCC following a mild infection without hospitalization, such alterations are rarely detected using conventional neuroimaging techniques. This study aims to investigate brain connectivity in patients with PCC with cognitive symptoms after mild COVID-19 infection, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Additional aims were to explore associations between brain connectivity, neuropsychological performance, and self-repor

Ovariectomy attenuates phenotypes related to Alzheimer's disease in a preclinical mouse model and in C57BL/6 J mice.

Women are at higher risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) than men and hormonal changes during perimenopause are considered a risk factor. The relationship between ovarian hormones and AD has been explored using AD animal models, especially through ovariectomy (OVX) in established AD models. The link between early-stage AD and ovarian hormones, however, remains unclear, largely due to the lack of suitable animal models. Appropriate models for studying early-stage AD pathology, treatment, and prevention are critically needed. The App knock-in mouse model, which carries a single amyloid precursor pr

Comorbidities and Disease Duration in Tourette Syndrome: Impact on Cognition and Quality of Life of Children.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive functions represent foundational factors for mental health and quality of life (QoL). In Tourette syndrome (TS), psychiatric comorbidities are common and have been inconsistently reported to affect the cognition and QoL of patients, while the role of tic disorder duration has not been yet explored. METHODS: To examine how comorbidities and TS duration may influence cognition and QoL, N = 80 children with TS (6-16 years) were evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV). Standardized questionnaires were used to assess the presence and severity of

Effects of agmatine on radial-arm maze memory performance and autistic-like behaviors in a male rat model of autism.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the fastest-growing child neuropsychiatric condition. Cognitive dysfunctions such as memory impairments are experienced by patients along with social disturbances and repetitive/stereotypic movements. We have used the radial arm maze (RAM), for measurement of working and reference memory errors in an animal model of autism. In addition, the potential effects of agmatine, an endogenous NMDA antagonist, on RAM performance and autistic-like behaviors were assessed. METHODS: Autism was modeled by valproic acid (VPA) administration at gestational Day 1

Brain-gut microbiome profile of neuroticism predicts food addiction in obesity: A transdiagnostic approach.

Neuroticism is one of the most robust risk factors for addictive behaviors including food addiction (a key contributor to obesity), although the associated mechanisms are not well understood. A transdiagnostic approach was used to identify the neuroticism-related neuropsychological and gut metabolomic patterns associated with food addiction. Predictive modeling of neuroticism was implemented using multimodal features (23 clinical, 13,531 resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), 336 gut metabolites) in 114 high body mass index (BMI ≥25 kg/m2) (cross-sectional) participants. Gradient boosti

Perception of yips among professional Japanese golfers: perspectives from a network modelled approach.

'Yips' in golf is a complex spectrum of anxiety and movement-disorder that affects competitive sporting performance. With unclear etiology and high prevalence documented in western literature, the perception and management of this psycho-neuromuscular problem among Japanese elite golfers is unknown. The objective of this study was to explore factors associated with yips, investigate the performance deficits and the strategies implemented to prevent yips. We surveyed approx. 1300 professional golfers on their golfing habits, anxiety and musculoskeletal problems, kinematic deficits, changes in t

Propranolol for treating emotional, behavioural, autonomic dysregulation in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVES: To date, there is no single medication prescribed to alleviate all the core symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD; National Institute of Health and Care Excellence, 2016). Both serotonin reuptake inhibitors and drugs for psychosis possess therapeutic drawbacks when managing anxiety and aggression in ASD. This review sought to appraise the use of propranolol as a pharmacological alternative when managing emotional, behavioural and autonomic dysregulation (EBAD) and other symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen reports examined the administration of propranolol in the context o

5-HT(2A) receptor activation in the dorsolateral septum facilitates inhibitory avoidance in the elevated T-maze.

Serotonin in the lateral septum has been implicated in the modulation of defense and hence in anxiety. However, it deserves investigation how changes in 5-HT-mechanisms in this area modulate defensive responses associated with specific subtypes of anxiety disorders. We evaluated the effects of intra-dorsolateral septum (DLS) injections of the preferential 5-HT(2A) receptor agonist DOI (8 and 16nmol), the 5-HT(2C) selective agonist MK-212 (0.1 and 1nmol) and the preferential 5-HT(2A) antagonist ketanserin (10 and 20nmol) in rats exposed to the elevated T-maze (ETM), a model which allows the mea
