Intracanal microbiome profiles of two apical periodontitis cases in one patient: A comparison with saliva and plaque profiles.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the characteristics of the endodontic microbiome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Saliva, plaque, and infected root canal wall dentin of two teeth suffering from apical periodontitis were harvested from a 58-year-old man. Bacterial DNA was extracted from each sample, and 16S rRNA gene analysis targeting the V3-V4 region was conducted on the Illumina MiSeq platform using QIIME2. The functional potential of the microbiomes was inferred using PICRUSt2. RESULTS: The four microbiomes were different in structure and membership, yet the nine most abundant metabolic pathways were comm

Microrobotics in endodontics: A perspective.

Microorganisms are the primary aetiological factor of apical periodontitis. The goal of endodontic treatment is to prevent and eliminate the infection by removing the microorganisms. However, microbial biofilms and the complex root canal anatomy impair the disinfection process. Effective and precise endodontic therapy could potentially be achieved using advanced multifunctional technologies that have the ability to access hard-to-reach surfaces and perform simultaneous biofilm killing, removal, and detection of microorganisms. Advances in microrobotics are providing novel therapeutic and diagn

Regenerative Endodontic Procedure on an Immature Necrotic Molar: A Case Report with a 5-Year Review.

BACKGROUND The regenerative endodontic procedure (REP) for managing necrotic immature permanent teeth has the advantage of promoting root growth over the traditionally used apexification techniques. However, there is limited evidence on the long-term outcome of standardized REPs performed on immature molars. This case report presents the 5-year clinical and radiographic outcomes of REP performed on an immature mandibular first molar. CASE REPORT A healthy 7-year-old girl with a carious right mandibular first molar was referred to the endodontic clinic for evaluation and treatment. Clinical exa

Elevated Cytokine Levels in Gingival Crevicular Fluid of Teeth with Apical Periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Biomarkers assayed from gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) are a potential tool for endodontic diagnosis and for monitoring treatment response. This cross-sectional study measured cytokines in GCF from teeth with apical periodontitis and evaluated their relationship with preoperative pain and other clinical findings. METHODS: Participants presenting for root-end resection surgery due to apical periodontitis diagnosis (n = 56) underwent standardized clinical testing and completed preoperative questionnaires. GCF from diseased and control teeth were collected, processed, and analyzed

Endodontic and aesthetic management of a conoid tooth with type IIIA dens invaginatus.

BACKGROUND: Dens invaginatus is a dental developmental abnormality caused by an infolding of the enamel organ into the adjacent dental papilla before the calcification of the dental tissues. The clinical presentation of dens invaginatus varies according to its severity, from mild forms, in which we might find a deeper than normal cingulum pit, to severe cases, in which there is a pronounced infolding reaching the apical foramen. The very nature of the invagination favours the contamination from the oral environment to the pulp space and the onset of caries. Therefore, patients might present wi

Periapical actinomycosis.

Two cases of actinomycotic lesions of the periapical tissue in relation to the molars are described. The difficulty in obtaining a positive culture for actinomycetes in spite of definite histologic evidence of actinomycosis is highlighted. Besides antibiotics, the importance of planned treatment to deal with the underlying diseased periapical tissue and the tooth is emphasized.

Utilization of Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Analyzing the Relationship Between the Mandibular Fourth Premolar Tooth Roots, the Mandibular Canal, and Ventral Mandibular Cortex in 81 Small Breed Dogs.

The mandibular fourth premolar teeth (308, 408) and surrounding mandibular bone are subject to pathologies such as periodontal disease, periapical pathology, and mandibular fracture. As such, the locations of these teeth roots in relation to the mandibular canal and the ventral mandibular cortex are important considerations when developing a surgical treatment plan. This study analyzed the 308 and 408 teeth with cone beam computed tomography scans in 81 small breed dogs. There was no statistically significant variance found in distance to the mandibular canal or the mandibular ventral cortex b

Multiple idiopathic apical root resorption.

Idiopathic external root resorption is a rarely reported condition which has been observed in single or multiple teeth. This is a rare case of multiple idiopathic apical root resorption (MIARR) in a 16-year-old boy. External root resorption of the permanent teeth is a multifactorial process. Well-recognised causes of apical root resorption in permanent teeth include orthodontic therapy, trauma, periapical or periodontal inflammation, tumours, cysts, occlusal stresses, impacted teeth, systemic conditions, endocrine imbalances and dietary habits. When none of these causes are present, it is term
