Stobadine, a drug with the pyridoindol structure, was compared with thiopental and pentobarbital for its ability to inhibit stimulated peroxidation in homogenates of spinal cord in vitro. The antioxidative capacity of the drug exceeded that of barbiturates more than 100-fold. The mechanisms of the liver damage produced by three glutathione (GSH) depleting agents, bromobenzene, allyl alcohol and diethylmaleate, was investigated. We have investigated lipid peroxidation and oxidation of lignoceric acid in response to oral thioridazine administration, to better understand the effects of phenothiazines, which are one of the more commonly used therapeutic agents.
