Ecotoxicological effects of the neonicotinoid insecticide dinotefuran on springtails (Folsomia candida) at soil residual concentration.

Dinotefuran, a third-generation neonicotinoid insecticide, is widely used in agriculture production due to its excellent insecticidal efficacy. Considering its persistence and high toxicity in soil, it is essential to evaluate its low-dose toxic effects on non-target soil organisms such as the springtail (Folsomia candida). The results revealed that the 7-day half lethal concentration (7d-LC50) of dinotefuran contact toxicity to springtails was 0.029 μg cm-2. Its chronic toxicity in 4 soil types was ranked as: red soil (0.021 mg kg-1) > fluvo-aquic soil (0.040 mg kg-1) > artificial soil (0.049

Light oxygenated volatile organic compound concentrations in an Eastern Mediterranean urban atmosphere rivalling those in megacities.

Highly resolved measurements of primary and secondary oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) by proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) and the AMOVOC sampler (Airborne Measurements Of VOC) were performed in Beirut, Lebanon, during the ECOCEM (Emissions and Chemistry of Organic Carbon in the East Mediterranean) experiments. The OVOC concentrations (0.15-7.0 ppb) rival those reported for international megacities like Paris, Tokyo, or São Paulo (0.3-6.5 ppb). This study highlights the seasonal variability of OVOCs, the potential role of background pollution on OVOC concentrati

PFOS-induced dyslipidemia and impaired cholinergic neurotransmission in developing zebrafish: Insight into its mechanisms.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant that has been widely detected in the environment and is known to accumulate in organisms, including humans. The study investigated dose-dependent mortality, hatching rates, malformations, lipid accumulation, lipid metabolism alterations, and impacts on cholinergic neurotransmission. Increasing PFOS concentration led to higher mortality, hindered hatching, and caused concentration-dependent malformations, indicating severe abnormalities in developing zebrafish. The results also demonstrated that PFOS exposure led to a significan

Gamma-irradiated copper-based metal organic framework nanocomposites for photocatalytic degradation of water pollutants and disinfection of some pathogenic bacteria and fungi.

BACKGROUND: Although there are many uses for metal-organic framework (MOF) based nanocomposites, research shows that these materials have received a lot of interest in the field of water treatment, namely in the photodegradation of water contaminants, and disinfection of some pathogenic bacteria and fungi. This is brought on by excessive water pollution, a lack of available water, low-quality drinking water, and the emergence of persistent micro-pollutants in water bodies. Photocatalytic methods may be used to remove most water contaminants, and pathogenic microbes, and MOF is an excellent mod

Genome-resolved metagenomic analysis of Great Amazon Reef System sponge-associated Latescibacterota bacteria and their potential contributions to the host sponge and reef.

The Great Amazon Reef System (GARS) is an extensive biogenic reef influenced by a plume layer of sediments. This creates an extreme environment where light is reduced, thus affecting physicochemical properties as well as living organisms such as sponges and their microbiomes. The sponge's microbiome has numerous ecological roles, like participation in biogeochemical cycles and host nutrition, helping the sponge thrive and contributing to the ecosystem. Also, sponges and sponge-associated microorganisms are rich sources of bioactive compounds, and their products are applied in different areas,

Ab initio kinetics of the pyrene + OH reaction: a revisited study.

Pyrene belongs to the highly toxic class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and has carcinogenic properties; thus, the kinetics of its OH-initiated oxidation is theoretically investigated in a wide range of conditions (T = 200-2000 K and P = 7.6-76,000 Torr). The T & P-dependent kinetic behaviors were studied within the stochastic RRKM-based master equation framework with the potential energy profile constructed at the ROCBS-QB3//M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ level. The computed total rate constants ktotal are in good agreement with the laboratory values, thus helping resolve the discrepancy between the

Single-cell transcriptomics showed that maternal polychlorinated biphenyl exposure dysregulated cell type-specific metabolic responses in the livers of female mouse offsprings.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental toxicants that bioaccumulate in the food chain and readily cross the placenta, raising concerns for developmental toxicity. Although PCB exposure has been associated with metabolic and neurodevelopmental disorders, its cell type-specific effects on liver development remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate how maternal exposure to an environmentally relevant Fox River PCB mixture affects liver development in female offspring at single-cell resolution. We hypothesized that developmental PCB exposure disrupts hepatic

Environmentally persistent free radicals stimulate CYP2E1-mediated generation of reactive oxygen species at the expense of substrate metabolism.

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are a recently recognized component of particulate matter that cause respiratory and cardiovascular toxicity. The mechanism of EPFR toxicity appears to be related to their ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative damage. EPFRs were shown to affect cytochrome P450 (P450) function, inducing the expression of some forms through the Ah receptor. However, another characteristic of EPFRs is their ability to inhibit P450 activities. CYP2E1 is one of the P450s that is inhibited by EPFR (MCP230, the laboratory-generated EPFR m

Antimicrobial resistance transmission in the environmental settings through traditional and UV-enabled advanced wastewater treatment plants: a metagenomic insight.

BACKGROUND: Municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are pivotal reservoirs for antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB). Selective pressures from antibiotic residues, co-selection by heavy metals, and conducive environments sustain ARGs, fostering the emergence of ARB. While advancements in WWTP technology have enhanced the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants, assessing ARG and ARB content in treated water remains a gap. This metagenomic study meticulously examines the filtration efficiency of two distinct WWTPs-conventional (WWTPC) and advanced

Molecular bioindicators for assessing environmental impacts of emerging contaminants.

Emerging contaminants (ECs) exert subtle yet persistent pressures on environmental systems, often escaping detection by traditional chemical or ecological monitoring. Molecular bioindicators, i.e., genes, enzymes, or pathways whose presence, abundance, or expression reflects contaminant exposure or biological stress, offer a mechanistic basis to trace pollutant fate and functional disruption. These include degradation and transformation genes reflecting detoxification potential, resistance and adaptation genes such as antimicrobial resistance determinants, and toxicity-response genes indicatin

Micro-Nano Plastics and 6-PPD-Q in Cardio-Pulmonary Health: Environmental Sources, Systemic Exposure, and Mechanistic Insights.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) and the tire-derived transformation product 6-PPD-Quinone (6-PPD-Q) have emerged as pervasive environmental pollutants with critical implications for cardiopulmonary health and ecosystem integrity. This review identifies tire wear particles (TWPs) as a primary source of both airborne and waterborne MNPs, as well as 6-PPD, which readily oxidizes into the highly toxic 6-PPD-Q. These contaminants have been detected across diverse environmental compartments including air, soil, water, and remote ecosystems highlighting their global distribution and persistence. Human

Integrated metagenomic and 16S rRNA analysis reveals temporal associations between resistance genes and microbial communities during dairy manure composting.

Dairy manure composting is widely applied to stabilize organic waste and reduce environmental pollution, yet the behavior of resistance determinants during this process remains insufficiently resolved. In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to characterize temporal changes in antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), metal resistance genes (MRGs), biocide resistance genes (BRGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and microbial community composition during dairy manure composting. Rather than inferring direct mechanistic causation, our analyses focused on identifying statistically suppo

The Impact of Microplastics on Human Health: An Urgent Public Health Concern.

Microplastics (MPs) have rapidly become one of the most pervasive pollutants in the modern world. Far from being confined to oceans or waste sites, these tiny particles now circulate through the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. As everyday plastic items break down over time, they form microscopic fragments that can travel long distances and enter the human body through inhalation or ingestion. Once inside the body, these particles may accumulate in organs and interact with biological systems in ways that scientists are only beginning to understand. This review synthesiz

Spatially Decoupled Dual-Active Sites Break the Activity-Humidity Trade-Off: Achieving Water-Promoted Ozonation of Dichloromethane.

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) present persistent environmental threats due to their recalcitrance to degradation and role in secondary pollution. Through the heterojunction engineering under dynamic Ostwald ripening, a cobalt-manganese oxide featuring a hollow sea urchin-like architecture was constructed. By directionally anchoring Co onto the Mn surface, the trade-off between catalytic activity and humidity tolerance in the ozone oxidation process was successfully addressed. The catalyst features spatially decoupled active centers, where Mn3+ sites mediate dichloromethane (DC

Insights into bioremediation of pharmaceuticals from wastewater streams: A meta-analysis of build type and organism selection.

Pharmaceuticals are widely used to manage health issues, but their release into the environment poses risks to human health and ecosystems, and most wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove them. The suite of alternative treatments (e.g. ozonation, advanced oxidation) are expensive and intensive. Bioremediation techniques using plants, algae and fungi offer practical potential for pharmaceutical removal. This meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of plants, algae and fungi for removing pharmaceuticals from practical wastewater treatment systems-including constructed wetlands,

Adsorptive behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with iron nanoparticles for bisphenol A removal.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a persistent organic pollutant with toxic effects on human health and ecosystems. In this study, the performance of MWCNT-OH functionalized with iron nanoparticles (MWCNT-OH@Fe) using sugarcane bagasse extract as a reducing agent (green synthesis) was evaluated for BPA adsorption. The kinetics are fast, between 10 and 20 min in the range of concentrations evaluated and the resistance to external film diffusion (external film mass transfer) identified as the rate-limiting step of the process. The qmax was 0.301 mmol/g, determined by the Langmuir model, at 40 °C. The adsorpt

2-Hydroxyanthraquinone induces cardiotoxicity in zebrafish via ferroptosis.

2-Hydroxyanthraquinone (2-hATQ) is a photochemical oxidation product of anthracene (ANT), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. ANT is listed as a priority pollutant by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) due to its resistance to degradation and persistence in the environment. Because of ANT's characteristics, 2-hATQ can also be ubiquitously present in the environment and is more toxic than its parent compound ANT, posing significant risks to environmental safety and human health. Nevertheless, there are limited studies addressing its toxicological effects, particularly concerning cardio

Evaluation of ecological risks of antibiotics in Danjiangkou Reservoir basing on toxicity potency and antibiotic resistance genes transfer.

This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of antibiotics in Danjiangkou Reservoir, and further assessed their potential risks to aquatic organisms based on toxicity potency as well as their relationships with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) host microbial communities. Sulfonamides, particularly sulfamethoxazole and sulfamonomethoxine were the most frequently detected antibiotics. Among macrolides, azithromycin showed the highest prevalence and concentrations, likely linked to therapeutic usage in COVID-19. Seasonal variations revealed higher antibiotic concentrations in the dr

Nanoconfined metastable manganese sulfide in mesoporous silica enables effective suppression of microbial mercury methylation.

Mercury contamination in aquatic ecosystems poses a persistent threat to human health, primarily due to the formation of the highly toxic and bioaccumulative methylmercury (MeHg). Conventional remediation strategies (e.g., adsorption, precipitation) often fail to prevent MeHg generation as the immobilized mercury remains bioavailable to methylating microorganisms. Here, we develop a manganese sulfide-mesoporous silica composite (MnS@SBA) that leverages nanoconfinement within the silica channels to stabilize the metastable γ-MnS phase, thereby enhancing mercury sequestration while effectively s

Synergistic potency of ultrasound and solar energy towards oxidation of 2,4-dichlorophenol: a chemometrics approach.

Industrial units based on chemical processes-the textile and paper industries-are major sources of chlorophenols in the environment, and chlorophenolic compounds persist within the environment for a long time with high toxicity levels. The photo-assisted Fenton's and photocatalysis processes were investigated for the degradation of chlorophenols in the present study. Response surface methodology was employed to get optimised conditions for photocatalysis and photo-Fenton process-governing factors, thus, yielding a profound removal efficiency. Under optimised conditions, with a photocatalyst do
