Personality traits and night eating syndrome in women with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

PURPOSE: Previous research suggests that eating disorders may be associated with certain personality profiles; however, there is limited research investigating associations with night eating syndrome (NES). This research suggests harm avoidance personality trait is higher in NES individuals than in the general population, however, evidence of associations with other personality traits is inconsistent. To understand which personality traits are associated with NES symptoms, the current study aimed to improve understanding of the relationship between NES symptoms and a range of personality trait

How blindness shapes personality: a neuro-ecological account.

INTRODUCTION: The established link between personality and psychological well-being underscores the need to understand how major life changes, such as vision loss, reshape an individual's disposition. While previous research has produced inconsistent findings, the roles of concurrent environmental factors and underlying neural mechanisms have remained largely unexplored. METHODS: This study employed an integrated neuro-ecological framework to investigate how blindness influences personality. We recruited 46 blind participants and 41 sighted controls, who completed comprehensive assessments in

Compassionately reactive: Personality profiles of speech-language pathologists and their professional trajectories.

Personality traits significantly influence health career trajectories, clinical performance, and burnout vulnerability. However, limited research has explored personality traits among speech-language pathologists (SLP), particularly across professional development stages. This study compared certified SLPs, Communication Disorders students, and a comparison group from the general population, examining differences in personality dimensions and the relationship between clinical experience and personality among SLPs. A total of 359 participants completed the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, assessing N

The influence of personality on the quality of vision after multifocal intraocular lens implantation.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the possible correlation between patients' personality traits and subjective perception of quality of vision (QoV), after multifocal intraocular lens (mIOL) implantation. METHODS: patients who had bilateral implantation of a non-diffractive X-WAVE or a trifocal lens were assessed 6 months postoperatively. Patients answered the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI-20) questionnaire ("Big Five five-factor personality model") to examine their personality. Six months following surgery, patients were asked to fill a QoV questionnaire where they graded the frequency of 10 common

Voice Disorders and Personality: New Steps on an Old Path.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between voice disorders and personality by comparing a heterogenic group of dysphonic patients to non-dysphonic speakers using the NEO-FFI big-five personality inventory. METHODS: A group of 100 dysphonic patients diagnosed with 24 different pathologies was compared to 149 non-dysphonic speakers. Inter-group differences on the five NEO-FFI scales were evaluated using three analysis approaches, a general comparison between the dysphonic and non-dysphonic groups and arranging pathologies using a categorical and a continuous approach. RESULTS: Of …

Personality traits and BMI trends over three years in Japanese university students.

In Europe and America, associations between personality traits and body-mass index (BMI) have been reported. However, in Japan, the association between personality traits and BMI (i.e., thinness and obesity) has not been well studied. In this study, we investigated the relationship between Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) personality traits and changes in BMI status among Japanese students during their university attendance. We measured the height and weight of 5,340 students in a Japanese university during annual medical checkups and calculated their BMI. The students' personality tr

Trait Sensitivity, Anxiety, and Personality Are Predictive of Central Sensitization Symptoms in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND: Sensitivity-related trait characteristics involving physical and emotional sensitivities and high trait anxiety personality types have been observed in individuals with nonspecific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP). High trait sensitivity to sensory stimulation combined with interpretation biases based on personality type may contribute to the development of central sensitization (CS) symptoms. To date, there is limited research that has considered both sensitivity levels and personality type in NSCLBP with CS. The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) relationships between tra

Utility of the temperament and character inventory (TCI) in outcome prediction of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding: preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: Research about personality factors involved in successful outcome after bariatric surgery has led to contrasting results. The reasons for such discrepancies may include the lack of assessment of adaptive personality traits and of psychiatric co-morbidity, which may limit the reliability of personality findings. This study aimed to provide exploratory data regarding preoperative personality dimensions and weight loss prediction 1 year after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). Both normal and deviant personality patterns were assessed by means of the Temperament and Chara

Association of C-reactive protein elevation with trait aggression and hostility in personality disordered subjects: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of personality traits of aggression and hostility, in generally healthy human subjects, has been shown to be associated with elevations of C-reactive protein (pCRP), which, in turn, has also been shown to be associated with an increased risk of cardiac disease. In this pilot study, the author tests the hypothesis that pCRP elevations are associated with the traits of aggression and hostility in personality disordered subjects, a group at high risk for the presence of aggression and hostility. METHOD: Participants were 99 medically healthy subjects meeting DSM-IV criter

Affective instability and impulsivity in borderline personality and bipolar II disorders: similarities and differences.

OBJECTIVES: many studies have reported a high degree of comorbidity between mood disorders, among which are bipolar disorders, and borderline personality disorder and some studies have suggested that these disorders are co-transmitted in families. However, few studies have compared personality traits between these disorders to determine whether there is a dimensional overlap between the two diagnoses. The aim of this study was to compare impulsivity, affective lability and intensity in patients with borderline personality and bipolar II disorder and in subjects with neither of these diagnoses.

The Impact of Personality Pathology on Treatment Outcome in Late-life Panic Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid personality disorders are assumed to negatively interfere with the treatment outcome of affective disorders. Data on late-life panic disorder remain unknown. We examined the association of personality pathology and treatment outcome related to age and treatment modality. METHODS: An observational study on the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder with agoraphobia among patients 18 to 74 years of age and randomized controlled comparison of paroxetine and CBT in older patients (60 y of age or older) were performed. Changes in sleep structure and sleep spindles are associated with the neuropsychiatric profile in paradoxical insomnia.

AIM: Sleep spindles have an important role in the pathophysiology and perception of sleep. We aimed to investigate the link between sleep spindles and microstructural architecture of sleep in regard to psychiatric characteristics in paradoxical insomnia. METHOD: A total of 40 participants (20 with paradoxical insomnia, 20 healthy controls) were included in the study. All participants were evaluated by somnologists and undergone a full-night polysomnography at sleep laboratory. In addition, psychiatric interview was made by the same psychiatrist, and questionnaires were performed to assess the

Advances in neoadjuvant therapy for locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (Review).

PURPOSE: Identifying factors that affect recovery or restoration of neurological function is a key goal of rehabilitation in neurology and ophthalmology. One such factor can be prolonged mental stress, which may be not only the consequence of nervous system damage but also a major risk factor, or cause, of neural inactivation. Using the visual system as a model of neural injury, we wished to study how patients' stress and personality profiles correlate with vision recovery as induced by therapy with alternating current stimulation (ACS) in patients with optic nerve damage. METHODS: Personalit

Modeling maladaptive personality traits with unipolar item response theory: The case of Callousness.

Most IRT applications in personality assume that the measured trait is a bipolar dimension, normally distributed in the population. These assumptions, however, could be questionable for maladaptive, (quasi) pathological traits that still fall in the normal range. This study focuses on one such trait, Callousness, and uses two different instruments and samples to determine whether there is a basis for modeling it as a unipolar trait instead of a bipolar one. More specifically, the following community samples were used, recruited in several Spanish high schools: a) 719 adolescents (13-19 years o

An Examination of the Higher-Order Structure of Psychopathology and its Relationship to Personality.

This study compared a series of higher-order models encompassing symptoms of both clinical and personality disorders. The final model was then correlated with a latent variable model of normal personality traits. A total of 420 undergraduates completed a battery of self-report symptom and personality questionnaires, with informant-reports and diagnostic interviews provided by overlapping subsamples. A three-level model with two factors at the highest level and four factors at the second level was the best fitting model. The higher-order internalizing and externalizing factors were then correla
