This paper is the first systematic review of the literature on the relationship between shame and social anxiety (SA). We reviewed a total of 60 peer-reviewed empirical articles that met criteria for inclusion. We begin by summarizing literature investigating the empirical association between shame and SA and review literature on whether this association is impacted by cultural or diagnostic differences. Next, we briefly describe the updated version of Rapee and Heimberg's (1997) cognitive-behavioral model of social anxiety disorder (SAD; Heimberg, Brozovich, & Rapee, 2014) and propose how sha

OBJECTIVES: Emotional and cognitive factors have been shown to affect pain, and one of the main factors in the development of this effect is pain catastrophizing. The present study aims to determine the effect and frequency of the pain catastrophizing in shoulder lesions and to examine the association between pain catastrophizing and to assess the pre-operative and post-operative functional outcomes.
METHODS: A total of 114 patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopy were included study. Pain catastrophizing scale, Tampa kinesiophobia scale, visual analog scale, and University of California a

OBJECTIVE: Very brief exposure to masked images of spider stimuli can facilitate approach behaviour towards spiders in fearful subjects. We hypothesized that a similar effect might occur for fear of food in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), possibly offering a new treatment approach, with advantages over other methods of food exposure.
METHODS: Patients with AN (n = 60) were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions and received a single session of exposure to either masked and very briefly presented food images, clearly visible food images, or masked non-food images (i.e.

A negative self-image is a well-known symptom in many psychiatric disorders. Many treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy (PD), are therefore used. CBT focuses on the self-image, while PD works with the self-image and the image of the other. A fictitious case shows how affect phobia therapy (AFT), a representative of PD, examines this dual focus. When comparing the dual AFT approach with the single CBT treatment, it appears that both approaches improve self-image, the image of the other and interpersonal functioning.

We investigate the relationship between religious afterlife belief and fear of death in a Jewish population. Functionalist theories of religion often assert that afterlife belief serves as a buffer for death anxiety. Accordingly, those who attest to stronger, more orthodox, beliefs in an afterlife ought to indicate lower rates of death anxiety than those who do not have strongly held afterlife beliefs. From a wide-ranging survey of attitudes and experiences with death, we show that specific beliefs, intensity of belief, and orthodoxy of held beliefs play no significant role in the self-reporte

This study aimed to analyze fear of death and neutral acceptance of death after a significant loss and their associations with prolonged grief. The sample of the study included 239 bereaved participants. Time since the loss ranged from 6 to 72 months. We found that neutral acceptance of death was associated with older age, a natural cause of death, and the ability to find meaning in the death of a close one. Fear of death was negatively associated with the frequency of practicing religion. We found that fear of death but not neutral acceptance was significantly associated with prolonged grief

BACKGROUND: Prior theory and research has implicated disgust as relevant to some, but not all phobias.
AIMS: The current study examined whether anxiety sensitivity is more relevant to certain specific phobias and whether disgust sensitivity is more relevant to other specific phobias.
METHOD: Participants (n = 201) completed measures of anxiety sensitivity, disgust sensitivity and measures of aversive reactions in the presence of two fear-relevant stimuli (i.e. heights and small, enclosed spaces) and two disgust-relevant stimuli (i.e. spiders and blood/injury).
RESULTS: Results of multiple l

School refusal. School refusal covers a very heterogeneous set of problems ranging from refusal of schooling - in terms of engagement in learning or in situations of evaluation, in relation to knowledge - to school phobia or anxious school refusal. Furthermore, the clinical form of children and adolescents refusing school is determined by a wide range of factors - individual, family, school and cultural - that interact with each other and change over time. In the context of a multidimensional approach, the apprehension of school refusal involves a dialogue between the family, health profession

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that individuals with high levels of social anxiety utilize more safety behaviours and experience more post-event processing than those with lower levels of social anxiety. There are also data to suggest that the relationship between safety behaviour use and social anxiety symptoms is mediated by perceived control of one's anxiety. Furthermore, it has been suggested that post-event processing influences anticipatory anxiety for a future social situation.
AIM: A direct link between the perpetuating factors of social anxiety described above has not been established

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effectiveness of acupuncture on claustrophobia, and to explore the effects of acupoint specificity on claustrophobia.
METHODS: This was an evaluator-blinded randomized controlled trial. One hundred and sixty patients who presented with claustrophobia during magnetic resonance imaging examination were randomized into an acupoint group, a non-acupoint group, a sham-acupoint group and a blank group, 40 cases in each one. The patients in the acupoint group were treated with acupuncture at Zhaohai (KI 6), Taichong (LR 3), Lingdao (HT 4), Neiguan (PC 6), Shenmen (HT 7), Da

Fear, which can be expressed innately or after conditioning, is triggered when a danger or a stimulus predicting immediate danger is perceived. Its role is to prepare the body to face this danger. However, dysfunction in fear processing can lead to psychiatric disorders in which fear outweighs the danger or possibility of harm. Although recognized as highly debilitating, pathological fear remains insufficiently treated, indicating the importance of research on fear processing. The neurobiological basis of normal and pathological fear reactions is reviewed in this article. Innate and learned fe

OBJECTIVE: Paruresis refers to the inability to initiate or sustain urination where individuals are present due to the fear of perceived scrutiny from others. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate four key questions: (1) What is the prevalence of paruresis and its associated demographic features; (2) What is the prevalence of psychopathology in paruresis cohorts, how does it compare to other chronic-health conditions, and what percentage of paruresis patients also have social anxiety disorder? (3) How does quality of life, and levels of anxiety and depression compare between those

In this case study the author reviews the benefits of hypnosis for a 13-year-old female suffering from a specific phobia involving a fear of choking and generalized fear of swallowing that resulted in an episode of Restrictive Food Intake Disorder with associated significant weight loss. At the time of the initial consultation, three weeks after her choking episode, the patient weighed 93 pounds. Standing at 5'2", her Body Mass Index (BMI) was 17 (15th percentile) indicative of healthy weight for a child her age and height. She continued to lose weight over the course of 2 months and at her wo

OBJECTIVE: Based on clinical observations, social anxiety disorder (SAD) is usually described as a chronic disorder. Its natural course in the community is less clear.
METHOD: The present review summarises prospective and retrospective spontaneous remission rates of SAD in the community and its predictors that were published after 1987. Remission rates were specified as partial, defined as still having social fears, but not fulfilling the diagnostic criteria, and full, defined as having no social fears anymore.
RESULTS: In prospective studies, remission rates of SAD varied between 36% and 93

Numerous imaging studies have confirmed the amygdala as prominent within a neural network mediating specific phobia, including arachnophobia. We report the case of a patient in whom arachnophobia was abolished after left temporal mesial lobectomy, with unchanged fear responses to other stimuli. The phenomenon of abolition of specific phobia after amygdala removal has not, to our knowledge, been previously reported.

Halitosis, or bad breath occurs in 25 % of the population. 85% of the causes are located within the oral cavity (for example: periodontitis, pathologicaly coated tongue or poor oral hygiene). This is the reason why the dentist is often the first person, who sees patients presenting this problem. While some patients feel that their breath smells bad, people with genuine halitosis usually do not notice this fact, which has been called the "bad breath paradox". For people in whom symptoms of halitosis are not present, and yet they complain about having them, psuedohalitosis or halitophobia are de
